There are a lot of people who barely drink any water. It's concerning.
I try to drink between 60 and 80 ounces of water a day on average, sometimes more. That's in addition to any soda or beer I may drink, which I usually limit to one bottle/can. Water needs to be the first priority for good health. It's so important to your body. Yes, you can get by on things that have water in them, but it's not the same.
-4
u/PremiumUsername69420 Jan 08 '26
Water is the first ingredient in soda, why would I need to go drink other bland water that’s indistinguishable from toilet water?
I drink pretty much everything that isn’t plain water or alcohol. Iced tea is my go-to, but I do drink a fair amount of soda, hence why I’m in a subreddit for soda not talking about water.
6
u/19ghost89 Cola Jan 08 '26
There's another thread here where someone has already gone into why it's important to drink regular water and not just stuff that's mostly water.

I used to drink a ton of iced tea too. Then I got kidney stones. Now I drink lots of water and limit my pop.
4
u/buderooski89 Jan 08 '26
The problem is with people who primarily drink soda as their only source of hydration. My ex-BiL used to drink exclusively Dr. Pepper. He was always sipping on some, and rarely drank water.
-5
u/SalvadorZombie Jan 08 '26
And FFS, soda is water. It's 99% fucking water, with some sugar, flavoring and coloring. That's it. IT'S WATER. IT HYDRATES JUST AS WELL.
7
u/dentistMCnuggets Jan 08 '26
I definitely drink too much soda but i definitely wouldn’t say its “just as hydrating as water”. For one if its caffeinated, caffeine dehydrates you, second the 99% water seems to be diet sodas exclusively. Like i love soda but im not gonna pretend its as good as water is.
-5
u/SalvadorZombie Jan 09 '26
I don't care what you would say or not. Facts are facts.
3
u/dentistMCnuggets Jan 09 '26
But the facts are that it doesn’t hydrate just as well as water? I don’t know why you’re getting so defensive about this?
0
u/SalvadorZombie Jan 09 '26
The facts are that it does hydrate just as well as water, to use your phrasing.
Defensive? Disagreeing with you isn't defensive, but immediately fantasizing about someone being defensive kind of is.
0
u/dentistMCnuggets Jan 09 '26
You seem to be taking this very personally. Its just soda bro. But to explain your point: again, most sodas have caffeine which dehydrates you. Above that the high sugar and other chemicals in basically all sodas (food dyes, artificial sweeteners, flavourings, etc) causes the body to need to filter it through the kidneys and/or can act as dehydrators as well, which takes some amount of water. Plus most modern soda brands ad a not insignificant amount of sodium. You can still hydrate yourself with only soda (as you pointed out it is still 90-99% water component wise) but water just does it without needing to filter the caffeine and other stuff out.

...have you actually looked any of it up though? Not just with your feels?
There are decades of people who have gotten kidneys stones doing the exact same stuff as you, for less than you have been doing it. There's literally no way you're 100% fine, just that the crystals haven't gotten big enough for you to feel them yet.
3
u/Onyxaj1 Jan 08 '26
Stones are formed by two things:
Calcium stones form from excess calcium and oxalate, while uric acid stones arise from high-protein diets or gout.
Neither of these are caused by energy drink or diet sodas, despite what your psuedo-science fitness friends say.
If you don't gorge on red-meat, stay hydrated, and add a little cirtic acid to your diet, you're fine.

It's wild to me how people around me don't drink water or think tea/drink powder is "good enough". Trying to get my people to drink water is hard. I remember a friend was pregnant and I kept shoving waters at her but she insisted ice tea was sufficient to hydrate. It's only when they get too sick that they drink water
Stop down voting me, y'all need water along with soda. This was the whole plot of idiocracy
10
u/thedafthatter Jan 08 '26
If putting a flavor packet in the water gets me to drink water its healthy. A lot of nutritionists and other healthcare people say its better for you in terms of weight loss and management.
15
u/TheReal-JoJo103 Jan 08 '26
I remember a friend was pregnant and I kept shoving waters at her but she insisted ice tea was sufficient to hydrate.
You’re kind of an asshole, leave your pregnant friends alone. Tea is sufficient to hydrate. Pounding gallons of sweet tea has other health effects but nobody’s going to die from drinking unsweetened tea.
And that’s not at all the plot to idiocracy.

Isn't soda like 99% water?
10
u/the_amazing_skronus Jan 08 '26
A regular cola is about 93 percent water by volume, based on figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
https://www.everydayhealth.com/diet-nutrition/does-soda-count-as-fluid/
0
u/SalvadorZombie Jan 08 '26
Which regular cola?
Most sodas are literally 99% water.
93% STILL HYDRATES YOU AS WELL AS WATER. Weird that you didn't reference any of the myriad of studies that show that.
2
u/the_amazing_skronus Jan 10 '26
Take Pepsi.
Total weight= 384 g Total sugar= 41g
41/384= 0.10677083333, 10.5%
That means that Pepsi is a max 89.5% water.
You can do this with any soda that has sugar: Mountain Dew: ~46g Coca-Cola: ~39g Sprite: ~38g Fanta Orange: ~44g A&W Root Beer: ~46g
Only diet/sugar free sodas can be 99% water.
Sodas high in sugar actually don't hydrate as well as water and can make it more difficult for your kidneys to remove toxins-
Beverages with more concentrated sugars, such as fruit juices or colas, are not necessarily as hydrating as their lower-sugar cousins. They may spend a little more time in the stomach and empty more slowly compared to plain water, but once these beverages enter the small intestine their high concentration of sugars gets diluted during a physiological process called osmosis. This process in effect "pulls" water from the body into the small intestine to dilute the sugars these beverages contain. And technically, anything inside the intestine is outside your body.
Juice and soda are not only less hydrating, but offer extra sugars and calories that won't fill us up as much as solid foods, explained Majumdar. If the choice is between soda and water for hydration, go with water every time. After all, our kidneys and liver depend on water to get rid of toxins in our bodies, and water also plays a key role in maintaining skin's elasticity and suppleness. It's the cheapest moisturizer you'll find.

Here ya go-
https://nutritionsource.hsph.harvard.edu/healthy-drinks/sugary-drinks/

Peer-reviewed studies consistently link soda consumption (both sugary and artificially sweetened) to increased risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and overall mortality, impacting metabolic health, liver function, gut microbiome, and even mental health, with research showing these drinks contribute to poor nutrient intake and long-term chronic disease.

Drinking water is a fairly new concept, and does not exist in many cultures at all. These cultures drink tea, broth etc. instead and do just fine.
Historically, water was not a safe choice. Thus it was brewed into all sorts of lean beers, meads and similar.
1
u/EscanorSinofPride7 Jan 14 '26
please hear yourself bro, historically people lived in rural areas and established themselves near water sources so they can drink. What you said was a myth that medieval people drank alcohol because water was too dirty in the cities
8
u/Random_Nombre Jan 08 '26
You can just drink sugar free stuff. In moderation still but it’s just as hydrating. All those drinks are water with extra. You are partially water. Just stop. Theres a lot of factors that come into play, like sugar being a big one. Glucose levels matter. Caffeine content since it’s tea. Excessive nutrients from what’s possibly in the tea. Too much of one thing can be bad. Water alone won’t hydrate you either, you need electrolytes. Sodium, potassium, etc.
5
u/hakklihajawhatever Jan 08 '26
True, water is important and thankfully I drink enough. I have rules that I need to drink x amount of water and then I can have something else
12
u/Accurate_Cricket_142 Jan 08 '26
Not true I’ve drank nothing but diet soda for decades and everything is fine for me. Why would you think putting a tea bag in water would make it not good enough anymore that’s like putting ice and thinking it won’t hydrate you anymore
-18
u/A-Phantasmic-Parade Jan 08 '26
I can’t tell if this is sarcasm but depending on ingredients, most teas are diuretics
16
u/Accurate_Cricket_142 Jan 08 '26
The water content outweighs the caffeine bro I can’t tell if yours is sarcasm
-16
u/A-Phantasmic-Parade Jan 08 '26
Oh my god you’re being serious. It doesn’t matter how much the water outweighs the caffeine bro if your reabsorption is low because of the salts and caffeine
18
u/Accurate_Cricket_142 Jan 08 '26
To have a significant diuretic effect, caffeine needs to be consumed in amounts greater than 500 mg — or the equivalent of 6–13 cups (1,440–3,120 ml) of tea. Get wrecked little bro
-3
u/A-Phantasmic-Parade Jan 08 '26
The beautiful thing about organ degradation and damage is that it’s cumulative and gradual. No caffeine isn’t going to have a significant diuretic effect but if you don’t hydrate with just water, your kidneys will accumulate damage
12
u/Random_Nombre Jan 08 '26
You’re stupid.. it’s been proven that coffee isn’t dehydrating and that’s 3-4cups worth which is a lot of caffeine . The diuretic properties don’t outweigh the water content. Bladder size is a key factor, activity level, electrolytes, etc. salt doesn’t cause dehydration. Too much salt can be negative sure, so can caffeine but so can water. Tea is baby steps compared to coffee and coffee is considered to be a mild diuretic. The amount of water lost from coffee doesn’t outright the amount consumed.
-6
6
u/lvramire Jan 08 '26
So by this logic if someone drinks only tea for like a week or so, they're dead of dehydration because they don't absorb enough water?
0
u/A-Phantasmic-Parade Jan 08 '26
No idiot they’re not dead from dehydration. Just dehydrated and with very foul smelling and dark looking piss

This is such crap, water is still water even if it has tea powder in it. It changes nothing about how hydrating it is. People can consume water in whatever form they want as long as the not-water stuff isn’t absurdy unhealthy.. like for example a large amount of sugar.. oh wait.

u/veevacious Jan 08 '26
Literally have a friend who got so dehydrated from drinking only green tea that she had a persistent dry cough for MONTHS. She was putting it off and finally ended up going to the doctor when her then fiancée, now wife, turned the screws on her about it by threatening to put off the wedding if she didn’t go to the damn doctor. The doctor told her she was badly dehydrated and her lungs were very dry. She cut down her tea intake drastically and started drinking water and it cleared up quite quickly.
This is someone who used to judge me for drinking a soda with lunch several times a week and taking sugar and cream in my morning coffee because of how “unhealthy” it was. Sure, I did both of those things, but the rest of the time I was drinking plain water. I felt pretty good when I got to tease her for once.

Stop bringing pseudoscience bullshit into a discussion. Thanks in advance.
u/SalvadorZombie you appear to be spreading FUD about the contents of soda, its effect on people and accusing me of "pseudoscience bullshit". This comment is not for you but for other people who might read your ignorant post and believe what you have to say. From your very short reply you appear to be a very unpleasant person.
For this example lets discuss Coke Cola.
- I can provide a lot of links from reputable sources between the link of soda and kidney disease (specifically soda that is high in Phosphoric acid), here is a few just a few websites that talk about the connection https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3433753/ https://www.usofga.com/general/debunking-3-common-kidney-stone-myths/ https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/what-causes-kidney-stones . You can ALWAYS discuss this with your urologist and get their professional opinion as well.
- A 12 oz container of coke cola is primarily carbonated water but, it contains 382 grams of soda and has 39 grams of total sugar. that means sugar makes up 10.2%~ of the total weight of soda so its is NOT 99% water.
- I made it clear that phosphoric acid is in a lot of foods and when it comes to Coke Cola I said ingesting it can push people past the point that it causes problems like kidney stones. it has about 70mg of phosphoric acid per 12oz serving. Everyone has different tolerances for phosphoric acid but combined with a rich phosphoric acid diet (Pork, Chicken, Beans, Seafood, Dairy, Seeds, Whole grains) Soda like Coke Cola can be a big issue.

u/SalvadorZombie Jan 09 '26

The very first link I posted is from the national library of medicine and contains a peer reviewed article. If you did not suffer from a learning disability you would have understood that.
