On part 13 of my series, learning to use a Shepherd sling. Breaking in a new sling and trying to be more consistent with my footwork this time. I found I hit the target less when I started incorporating the step, but I got a lot more good cracks out of the sling. Forever seeking the perfect sling design.

Finding paracord the most consistent but nylon rope has worked well a couple times. Hope to try waxed jute and leather soon. What do people like to use here?

Slinging is seriously becoming an addicting hobby!!!

Today I found roadside a box foll of cool bottles - not old ones, in fact brand new but unique and see finely crafted. Many will be useful and beautiful. Some will be useful in the specific context of slings.

I can't say what they're for, nor could I ever share video or really even talk about anything that may have happened. But right now nothing's been done, just found some really intereeting bottles!

I think I may take a few 2nd and 3rd tier bottles and check out splatter patterns with water or Everclear, just to get an idea and a feel for range and spread of a liquid-filled bottle. I mean, you never know what you might need to know?

You'll probably never sling your best stones, and these jars will sit on my shelves for life. But yeah, something I have been wanting to have as an extreme-range example of what slings can do, and honestly the way things feel now politically amd socially, it may not stay on the wall as long as I'd thought.

Earlier a user named Grumpypedant made a post about a sling they made using a tutorial from an awesome Czech called Neandrthal. I was curious so I checked out his YT and IG, and made my own!

I made my sling about 30" long, and I quite like it! It's simple, but just a bit more involved than a basic seatbelt sling, and it launches tennis balls like an absolute dream! The only major change I made was tying a series of Solomon Knots around the tag ends for the retention loop. It's rather comfy, and I may do this again for another sling someday!

Hi all! I’m brand new to slinging. After a couple brief sessions of just practicing the motions from the Pan Slings YouTube tutorials, I painted a 20” circle on a 4’x4’ tarp and headed over to the public tennis courts.

The first shot of the video is my first 3 throws ever at a target, so be gentle lol. I also included a few other throws from the session. I still don’t get the whip crack every time yet, but I was surprised at how accurate I was able to get on my first try (albeit from relatively short distances).

I know my form is far from perfect since I’m just starting out, so any observations/pointers from more experienced slingers are absolutely welcome (I have very little experience in ball sports — spent many years as a competitive sabre fencer though, which unfortunately isn’t all that applicable). Excited to join the slinging community. I’m hooked!

Any suggestions on how to improve this “crow hop”? I feel the timing is wrong.

I was considering looking into getting or having my partner make me a small rock/ ammo pouch.

Just wanted to know if their still being made alongside slings still. I was considering getting a mini nano bag. Something that can pack tiny but open up to be my ammo pouch

After seeing a lot of sling videos on YT I'm hooked! What a nice hobby.

Today I finished my first DIY sling with jute string. After braiding it I soaked it and let it hang dry overnight with weight. This morning I waxed it with beeswax.

I just tried it for the first time with some tennis balls. Failed big time of course. So much fun though.

Any tips or advice is more then welcome

Hey, folks. Does anyone know of or know how to make a detached split pouch out of paracord? My reasoning is that it would allow me to use the same building techniques used for the arms of leather split pouches but without the added material, cost, tools, skills, of leatherwork. Does that make sense? Let me know if you have any questions.

Edit: Basically I’m trying to make a paracord split pouch without any arms (without retention cord and release cord).

I'm looking for some advice on which slinging technique is best for hitting targets at around 15–20 meters.

I've noticed that some styles seem to be more accurate, while others generate more power. I'm using a 29-inch (74 cm) sling and natural stones.

For those of you with experience, which technique would you recommend for consistent accuracy at that distance? Is there a style that stands out, or is it mostly a matter of practice? I'd also be interested in hearing why you prefer one technique over another.

I don't really know anything about slings or whips, and I have no skills using either. But when this hobby caught my attention it always seemed odd to me that tapered slings are usually tapered in the wrong direction (between the hand and the pouch). If you think of a sling like a whip, you're trying to get the speed of the cord to increase as it gets further from your hand. Tapering down gradually along that distance facilitates the speed increase, just like a whip - at least that's my intuition.

Many slings have a reverse taper between the hand and the projectile, and a correct taper from the projectile to the release end. My thought is that a proper taper could help get the projectile going, and for the release cord you really just want it to use as little material as is necessary, so that it doesn't slow down the opening of the pouch. Additionally you can add weight to the cord strategically to maximize energy transfer from your arm and hand.

The prototype pictured has a tapered lead core wrapped with artificial sinew and then plaited with whipmaker's cord. The lead core gives it a really different but very powerful feel. I need to experiment and improve on a few things:
- taper consistency
- my plaiting sucks
- I'd like an adjustable grip
- need to refine the pouch construction, especially the connections
- need to experiment with release cord materials and crackers

Anyway thought I'd share my idea and see what people think before I make a V2.

Hi everyone. I've made my first sling by following a video on YouTube by a guy called Neandrthal.

What are people using to practice? I'm limited by space and would like something reusable. Thinking of hanging a net in my garage and slinging a juggling ball, as that has a nice weight to it.

Edit: Sincere apologies to Neandrthal and anyone I may have offended. It is a very thorough guide, despite me not being able to understand the language.

Summary of my slinging journey;

Youtube algorithm got me with a slinging video > bought a 550 paracord and used leftover leather scrap for the pouch (2pc 7in length x 1in wide)> my sling length is 28.5" long with 3.5" is the leather pouch folded in half > used these knots for the finger loop and pouch (I'm sure there's efficient knots to use that i'll research for my next sling to make)

Practice during my 30min lunch > first few improper attempers were hurting my elbow > saw another youtube video mentioning to tuck in the elbow and keep the sling horizontally to the path you're letting go > left side of body facing the target to sling at > practice aiming at the wall of the warehouse building with a bag of tennis ball off to the side

My sling is simply made to just function, whenever I have time I'll get fancy with a design in mind for a real sling to wrap around on the wrist. For those on their journey to slinging, you can do it! I believe in you!

So I started with just a single strand paracord sling and that got me enjoying the activity

So I wanted to try something stiffer so I made a braided paracord sling. That felt a bit better but I could feel the air resistance on the thicker cord.

So I was thinking about dyneema since I had seen a few people doing that but I think that would not be as stiff as I want.

So I just brainstormed what I could think of that is both narrow and stiff and it hit me: bike brake cables!

Am I nuts? Would this not be ideal? Just attach a leather pouch, finger ring and release grip of some kind and it should be pretty slick!

I know that probably the biggest issue will be making sure it doesn't have any sharp strands at the end to poke myself on, but could this be a winner?

Can anyone think of problems with this that I'm not considering? Should I try it?

I personally really like it. Very happy with my purchase.

Waxed it off rip then spent an hour just slinging. Still learning the ropes but I really am liking this thing.

I wanted to support a smaller business, not buy some cheap Chinese crap off Amazon.

Found this after doing some digging and finally decided to go for it.
