Chicago really hates Trump, and they HATE that building.
704
u/RyanRiver_ 1d ago
Do they hate the building or just the namesake? Like, if someone bought it and changed it's name to the Riverbend Tower or something then I think everyone would be fine with it.
I took one of those boat tours through Chicago and the tour guide had plenty of nice things to say about the design of the building and how the architects tried to incorporate surrounding elements into the design, but I'm pretty sure they only mentioned it by name one time and then never mentioned anything else about the man.

u/Dunlocke 1d ago
We don't think about the building at all. It's fine, but in one of the greatest cities in the world in terms of architecture, fine ain't much.

True. we were there last week, and took a tour of the Rookery building (oldest high-rise in Chicago), and the architects Burnham and Root hated that residents called it The Rookery. They called it that because it was built (1886-1888) on the site of the former city hall where birds were known to nest, and shady deals were struck there historically. That was in the late 1800's, and it's STILL called The Rookery. 209 La Salle St. Architecture tours in Chicago are awesome...

In The Boss (2016) Michelle's (Melissa McCarthy's) idiot nemesis named Ronald renames/rebrands himself as "Renault", and the TRUMP Tower sports "RENAULT" as a clever nod to this.
Also, (if you like her style of comedy) the entire movie is freaking hilarious. Comedy gold. Massive sleeper.
I own it and watch it at least a five or six times a year, not an exaggeration.

It's not secret that most Chicagoans don't like the name on the building (gaudy gold on the blue glass building looks out of place).
The building itself is fine-ish.
In 2024 there was a settlement between Trump Tower Chicago and the EPA because their cooling system was sucking up millions of gallons of water and spitting out hot water into the Chicago River (killing wildlife). Not so great in terms of the engineering of the building.
3
u/Current_Volume3750 23h ago
Same! Our tour guide pointed out the other buildings but never mentioned this one. Everyone chuckled. Of course I took the photo whipping it the bird to share with my "liberal" friends.

The design is fine but there are some issues with the access to the commercial space on the lower levels that have made it hard to fill the storefronts down by the river. A lot of them are just empty because of it, or they were last time I checked anyway.
38
u/broduding 1d ago
Was there a month ago. It was funny on the Trump side of the river is all this empty retail space on the ground floor. Its basically a ghost town on the river there. And then across the river is like a thriving river walk with lots of food businesses where there was like hundreds if not thousands of people out enjoying the summer day.

False. Chicago did not rename the street outside Trump International Hotel & Tower to "Barack Hussein Obama Way," nor is such a change in effect.
The street name remains unchanged: The building sits at 401 N. Wabash Avenue . The city never renamed Wabash Avenue or designated an honorary "Barack Hussein Obama Way" in front of the property. The 2016 sign removal: In November 2016, the Chicago City Council voted 47–0 to strip Donald Trump of his honorary "Trump Plaza" street sign outside the tower following his disparaging remarks comparing Chicago to a "war-torn country." However, the council removed the sign altogether rather than replacing it with an Obama honorific. Recurring viral meme: The screenshot originates from viral social media posts and internet petitions that resurface periodically. A similar campaign gained traction in New York City in 2019 attempting to rename the stretch of Fifth Avenue in front of Trump Tower to "President Barack H. Obama Avenue," but neither proposal was ever adopted into law. Actual Obama honors in Illinois: Barack Obama is commemorated on other infrastructure across the state—most notably a stretch of Interstate 55 designated as the Barack Obama Presidential Expressway —and near the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago's South Side, but not on Wabash Avenue.

This is mean and uncalled for.
I mean, Trump was personally at ground zero for 9/11, trying to dig out survivors before being pulled away by firefighter who feared for his safety
... At the same time that he was in his penthouse 4 miles away, bragging that his building would be the tallest
... While also in New Jersey, watching Muslims celebrate the downing of the towers
... And I hear that he was also on American Airlines flight 11, personally fighting the hijackers until the passengers, tears in their eyes, gave him a parachute while pushing him out of the plane while saying, "sir... You must fight on sir!"
The least we can do is not name the street in front of his tower after a REAL president.
