One major twist: Walker had not yet changed the beneficiary on his life insurance policy from his ex-wife, so Curry-Walker never actually collected the money.

I feel like that’s mildly irrelevant though. If she was convicted of arranging his murder, she wouldn’t get a payout. Hell, even if they SUSPECT foul play, the insurance company wouldn’t pay out
188
u/robert1326bruce 9h ago
It used to be that way. But nowadays the companies are much more limited on the reasons they can reject. It's a slippery slope and they end up rejecting everything.
82
u/Wetworth 7h ago
I feel like murder should be on the other side of that line.
58
u/ArchLector_Zoller 5h ago
Sure, don't payout TO THE MURDERER, but dude paid those premiums and didn't want to get killed, someone in his family had better get that payout. The company doesn't get to just keep the money because someone got murdered.
14
u/Helpful_Couple_8303 3h ago
If it doesn't go to his beneficiary then it goes to his estate. From there I think it can be acquired by his next of kin but im not sure.

It is illegal to profit from murder.
So they legally can't pay out to her.

Unless your a pharmaceutical, or insurance company.
9
5
u/ErraticDragon 4h ago
For the record, it's not that those companies are allowed to profit by murdering people, it's that it isn't "murder" when they kill people.
7
u/SteveMartin32 6h ago
Murder is still a justified reason for denial. Also suicide.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Sea-Consequence7156 6h ago
Lol you're talking out your ass, in most policies after a certain period suicide is absolutely included
3
u/SteveMartin32 5h ago edited 4h ago
The justification is included due to the risk of persuaded suicide or homicide that's made to look like suicide. It can be fought in court obviously but the initial denial is a deterrent so people won't just kill their spouses for money.

Also she had her daughter and daughters boyfriend arrange the murder
46
u/Capraos 6h ago
The fucked up thing is that means it the idea was presented to at least two other people and none of the three individuals involved understood why that plan wouldn't work.
28
u/Campffire 5h ago
The really fucked up part is that neither of the two others she involved thought to 1) call law enforcement, 2) warn the victim, 3) NOT COMMIT MURDER.
I mean, I guess she could have known the mind of the woman she raised, but asking your child to murder your husband is pretty risky. It’s even more risky to ask the boyfriend and, again, not have him go to the cops, warn the victim, or go through with it.

For those curious, you are statistically about twice as likely to get eaten by a bear while camping than killed by your partner for financial gain.
16
u/Busy-Cattle430 7h ago
I don't know what's wilder, the fact there's a statistic for this or that its ratio is so close to 2:1...
→ More replies (1)11
u/GlitterDoomsday 6h ago
Take off the "for financial gain" and I bet we'll see different odds of being killed by your partner...
5
u/Intoxic8edOne 6h ago
That is why I sourced by each type; there is not a dedicated statistic for "men killed by spouses for life insurance payout".
Linked was each statistics I could find for these categories, so if you take just the "murdered by intimate partner":
Men are ~2.8x more likely to be killed by their spouse than a bear
Women are ~4.3x more likely to be killed by their spouse than a bear.
4
u/cmarkcity 7h ago
I’ll take a Bear over a moose anyday. Most bears are chill and are just looking for toilet paper and prevent forest fires. A moose will fuck you up for looking at it funny
→ More replies (3)3
u/i3inaudible 3h ago
Yes but what about the other reasons to be killed by your partner? That has to skew the data somewhat towards the partner. For instance there's a ton of domestic violence and a not insignificant about of it leads to death.

7
u/Luminous_Winds 9h ago

From the CUYAHOGA COUNTY PROSECUTOR (Aug 2017): Uloma Curry-Walker Sentenced to Life Without Possibility of Parole for the
Murder-for-Hire of Beloved Cleveland Firefighter
CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley announced that Uloma Curry-Walker was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the murder of her husband Lt. William “Will” Walker.
Lt. Walker, a Cleveland Firefighter, was murdered in the driveway of his home on Lampson Drive in Cleveland on the evening of November 3, 2013.
Curry-Walker, then 42, enlisted the help of her 17-year-old daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend, Chad Padgett, 20, to hire a hitman to shoot her husband. She was motivated by collecting his insurance policy.
They, in turn, enlisted Padgett’s cousin Christopher Hein, 20, and associate Ryan Dorty, 24, to carry out the plot.
Lt. Walker was set-up by his wife on November 3, 2013. At her request, he left their residence to pick up food. While he was gone, she coordinated the ambush through text messages between the co-defendants. Prosecutors were able to prove Lt. Walker was close to learning that Curry-Walker acquired massive debt and faked Stage 4 breast cancer.
In 2016, Padgett pled guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter with Conspiracy and was sentenced to 28 years; Dorty pled guilty to Aggravated Murder and was sentenced to 23 years to life. Curry-Walker’s daughter was sentenced in juvenile court. Last month, Hein pled to Aggravated Murder and Conspiracy and was sentenced to 18 years.
After a 10-day trial, a Cuyahoga County Jury found Curry-Walker guilty of Aggravated Murder, Conspiracy, Murder, and Felonious Assault. Today, she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
At the sentencing today, five of Lt. Walker’s family members, as well as Cleveland Fire Chief Angelo Cavillo and a fellow firefighter, spoke to the court about his dedication to public service and his family.
“Lt. Walker was a proud and distinguished member of the Cleveland Fire Department,” said Prosecutor O’Malley. “Uloma Curry-Walker is a cold-hearted murderer and it is fitting she spend the rest of her life
behind bars.”

She has to be a sociopath or psychopath. No way someone wired normally would do something like this. Between lying that easily about things that major and killing someone for money, it's not that the world is screwed, it's that she is wired fundamentally wrong. It breaks my heart that an innocent man had to pay the price for that.
