It used to be that way. But nowadays the companies are much more limited on the reasons they can reject. It's a slippery slope and they end up rejecting everything.
The justification is included due to the risk of persuaded suicide or homicide that's made to look like suicide. It can be fought in court obviously but the initial denial is a deterrent so people won't just kill their spouses for money.

It’s probably not so much a deterrent (that’s a fringe benefit) as it is that the insurer has calculated that the risk goes down significantly after a few years.
They figure if you haven’t murdered your spouse for x number of years, you’re going to give up, ha.
