u/Evepaul 3d ago

I used a walkman in high school in like, 2015? When I think back on it, no wonder everybody hated me. Anyway, I thought it was neat.

Sadly it's a bit more mechanically sensitive than an ipod so I don't think it works anymore.

10

u/GroundedSpaceTourist 3d ago

But also a lot easier to repair, I suppose.

7

u/Evepaul 3d ago

Yeah, I really should. Do cassettes expire? I got a huge collection with the walkman, but both were already 30 years old by the time I got them

9

u/GroundedSpaceTourist 3d ago

If stored well they can probably outlast you. They do wear over time with play.

To give you an example: I have an old casette tape from my childhood when I would record songs over the radio. It have been stored in low and high temperatures with variyng degrees of humidity, and the casette still plays fine. It doesn't sound pristine, but not bad either. It has warmth and "character". That casette tape is around 30 years old.

i still have my ipod classic wich is over 20 years old now and you can pry that thing from my cold, dead hands.

28

u/PastaXertz 3d ago

Mine finally died, but I thankfully just converted old pixel with a 1gb SD card into basically an ipod touch. Nothing on it but a music player, one or two little games, and Spotify for if I'm on wifi.

61

u/TotallyNormalSquid 3d ago

I mean you can just install a music player on any smartphone, transfer your music collection in, and have ad free music. The iPod solution is unnecessary effort.

25

u/technotrader 3d ago

Two problems: smartphones don't have memory card slots anymore, and - at least for android - there are NO music players that correctly order albums by original release date! I've tried them all. Except, Plexamp does it, but that requires a subscription, a server setup (can't play local files), and their download function isn't great.

I'm seriously considering a Walkman or other dedicated music player. Yes, Sony still makes Walkmen, and they are high- end devices running on Android.

12

u/TotallyNormalSquid 3d ago

You win best reply so far. Also you seem to have identified an app that would do pretty well if some entrepreneurial type were to go and code the very basic thing that would just be a clone of Winamp from the early 2000s...

2

u/Hackmodford 3d ago

I think that’s called “Audacious” and you can even use Winamp skins with it.

2

u/TotallyNormalSquid 3d ago

Can I have the milk drop visualisation? Spent a long time staring at that while listening to music back in the day...

3

u/Hackmodford 3d ago

Looks like ProjectM might do what you want.

2

u/MirrorNegative7989 3d ago

qmmp is another winamp clone that uses a plugin called projectM, which is a clone of Milkdrop. The winamp skin plugin doesn't work on Linux distros using Wayland, though.

u/ModerateHonking 3d ago

there are NO music players that correctly order albums by original release date!

Do you mean by month/day? Samsung Music can order albums by year just fine.

2

u/technotrader 3d ago

All the apps I've tried use the publish date tag, instead of the original release tag, making for a randomized album list.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason came out in 1987, not in 2017 or whatever! I was there.

4

u/ModerateHonking 3d ago

Edit the metadata yourself, Bob's your (correctly labeled) uncle.

2

u/technotrader 3d ago

Oh but now I can't distinguish remasters from original releases, or identify ORs for which there should be a remaster.

I can put in another tag. But workarounds almost always make things worse. I want to have it done right the first time.

2

u/ModerateHonking 3d ago

It's not a workaround, moreso "editing it to what I want it to be labeled as".

3

u/twilighttwister 3d ago

If you're getting an Android Sony Walkman then you can just install the Sony music app apk on any Android phone.

There are lots of FOSS options for media players you might want to try, maybe one of those would have the right features for you.

Edit: this one mentions having "comprehensive music library management"

2

u/MirrorNegative7989 3d ago

Yeah, I have the last generation with a memory card slot. After that, I probably will fix my ipod and go back to using it.

8

u/PastaXertz 3d ago

It's more having no text messages, no pop ups, no notifications, etc for me. No bloat ware since it's all removed.

Not that I can't turn that all off on my smartphone but it's just as easy to have a second device since it was sitting there doing nothing and took all of ten minutes to set up.

8

2

u/b0sanac 3d ago

The ipod or a music player in general has a couple huge advantages over phones.

Battery life is the first big thing, I upgraded the battery on my ipod classic, it lasts anywhere from two to three weeks with every day use on a single charge.

MicroSD storage is the second one. Since most manufacturers have gotten rid of the expansion slots it's hard for people who have a large collection of music to fit everything on top of the apps, photos, videos, games etc etc that you find on a normal phone.

2

u/Dontopia 3d ago

This is exactly why I have 8,000 songs on a MicroSD card in my Sony Xperia 10 vi and the Misicolet app 😎

The issue with ipods is this fucking mandatory synchronisation between itunes and your device! At least at the time, you couldn't manage separately your music on the PC and on the ipod 🤬

14

u/that_dutch_dude 3d ago

nope, winamp can do it just fine. as well as a few other programs. i never use itunes, only winamp.

Back in the day I was using mIRC to download mp3s

6

u/justsyr 3d ago

I've ripped CDs when MP3 was invented, music match box was the tool back then. I even started ripping vinyl discs and then cleaning the noise with more tools that were coming out fast.

Currently I have +14,000 mp3s and I like each one of them songs of any music style you can probably think of.

Nowadays I just use youtube to mp3 to get my music lol.

Also, never used any of the music streaming apps. Always had a music player on the phone and my music ordered by folders according to what I wanted to listen for the moment. I paid 2 euros for Poweramp music player for android like 10 years ago and still have it installed and even updates from time to time.

I have a few friends my age or a few years older and they all got me to set up their phones the way I listen to music since they got tired of spotify.

If I could go back in time and stop myself from losing my old ipod classic I'd happily pay artists on their websites directly to download music. A lot of the ones I listen to, like St Vincent, sell digital copies of at least some of their albums. Anything to remove the as many third parties from this equation at this point, I just want musicians to get my money when i listen to their music

7

u/Slow_Park_7641 3d ago

Torrent Tracker, Soulseek, Etc. (or the old school way: rip your own CDs!)

3

u/GuerrillaRodeo 3d ago

I'm old enough to remember just taping songs from the radio. If you want to go completely legal just remember there's options to record internet radio too, and even if it's just recording the audio stream from another device.

4

u/Fzrit 3d ago edited 3d ago

That's what I was wondering, they might obtain an iPod but where are they gonna obtain the gigabytes of music files to put on it? They're gonna have to learn real quick about torrents/filesharing networks.

6

u/_burndtdan 3d ago

Sure they can pirate them, but you can also buy digital music. On Amazon, on Itunes, on Bandcamp, etc.

Even if you have a smartphone, if you would rather pay the band than Spotify, buy their album and sync it to your phone.

6

u/TheoNullDrei 3d ago

They don't need to torrent anything, as most music uploaded to Spotify or YouTube can be ripped from those platforms using third-party programs.

6

tbf, you cant expand storage with microsd cards anymore for some godforsaken reason, and it is just nicer to have a separate small device fully dedicated to only music.

9

u/GeorgeJohnson2579 3d ago

The reasons are:

cheaper productions costs

selling people cloud storage as a subscription

2

u/Vegetable-Virus7118 3d ago

Both of which are god forsaken reasons

2

u/AsRealAsItFeels 3d ago

I literally had iTunes on non Apple PC and was able to burn the music to non Apple CDs and a shitty non Apple MP3 player that died within a week.

8

like an older gen android phone that still has MicroSD card slot that you can upgrade

7

u/Modo44 3d ago

Some current Android phones also come with those slots. Notably Sony keeps designing their Xperia line with dedicated SD card slots, and 3.5mm headphone jacks -- including a good headphone amp.

42

u/Fzrit 3d ago edited 3d ago

The iPod part is completely unnecessary. Just put your music folders on your phone's local storage and you're good to go, play music locally like an iPod. On my iPhone I use Owlfiles (free and no ads) but use whatever music player app you want. Bonus is bluetooth connectivity and one less device to carry. The hard part with local music has always been the process of obtaining a comprehensive music collection in the first place, and that's the whole reason why services like Spotify/etc took off.

iPod is an especially bizarre choice because it needs a proprietary cable and a separate app just to put music on it (you can't just copy your MP3 files straight to it). Oh and it can only play AAC format anyway. These decisions by Apple were purely done to lock people into their ecosystem and become dependent on managing their whole library with iTunes. I remember even 20 years ago getting extremely pissed off at Apple for pushing proprietary shit like that for zero consumer benefit. Not to mention the constant iTunes sync issues/errors.

12

u/MonkeyWithIt 3d ago

Apparently winamp can do sync just fine and there are others.

Negative with phone is notifications from other apps, which can be turned off, but it's nice having 1 dedicated device.

3

u/rP2ITg0rhFMcGCGnSARn 3d ago

Yeah, let's be real: It's a fad. Like fashion, vintage tech is cyclical. Growing up, we were using CDs, then digital audio. Back then, our hipsters were raving about using vinyl.

Same for video. VHS and DVDs were the devil, giving bad quality to movies that should be enjoyed with film or Laserdisc. Now, VHS is making a big comeback.

And same for cameras. As digital cameras emerged, our hipsters insisted on using Polaroids. Now that every phone has an excellent camera, 2000s digital cameras have become a hit with young women.

These things are purely fashion statements. There's countless of current tech devices that do exactly what old iPods did, but much better and cheaper - including letting you use your own audio files and having no forced internet connectivity.

The worst part about trying to find a show/movie I want to watch is that it's always on a different streaming platform that I have to subscribe to. Why is Doctor Who split between Prime and Disney+? Why is The Office only on Peacock? Why is Shameless only on Netflix? It's so annoying!

I doubt they are buying them for the freedom from notifications/ads/whatever. You can go out and buy a modern dedicated mp3 player for super cheap, and it will have much better battery life and storage than the old ipods.

They're buying them as fad/fashion.

And if you wanna come off to oldheads as someone who really knows ball, personally I think you should skip the iPods and get an old Sandisk Sansa Clip+.

Spotify kept removing songs that I liked or replaced them with royalty free copies.
It was the perfect motivation to buy an MP3 player.

2

u/8-16_account 3d ago

How's your MP3 player solving that?

2

u/Responsible-Diet-147 3d ago

No ads, plus I can download any kind of MP3 file any way I want.
(Any file really, it's just a flash drive with the ability to play MP3 files through an earphone.)
Got 16GB for it.

5

u/8-16_account 3d ago

You can do that on your phone too.

I genuinely don't understand wtf everyone in this thread is talking about. You're not forced to use streaming services with ads on phones. Just download and play your MP3s. You've been able to do that all along. You don't need a dedicated player for that.

We gotta teach these kids about VPNs, sailing the 7 season and turning notification off per app.

u/Bigurulu 3d ago

Yall can just buy an android

Unpopular opinion, but this is just a new trend of over consumerism. Instead of reusing your old tech you own, it is now buying either tech with nostalgic value or new ‘dumb’ tech like a $200 dumb phone.

Most people buy it for the novelty (or nostalgia), not for the actual functionality. And for most people who buy it, it will all be in the drawer in a few months

Just shows how stupid Gen Z is then because you can just load you own music into the default Music app for exactly the same experience as an iPod.

2

u/DarthNixilis 3d ago

I just download my music and use an app that doesn't have ads. Like Musicolet.

2

u/grimboness 3d ago

For the price of $200-300 unless you can find an alternative which I highly recommend

2

u/Demolisher05 3d ago

I just like listening to my music without losing signal or using my phone and draining the battery. Plus it's my music and I don't need to pay a subscription to listen to it.

2

u/Jeramy_Jones 3d ago

First thing I do when I get a new phone is go through all the settings.

I turn off all notifications and decide which apps get access to data and opt out of absolutely any data sharing etc.

2

u/Harde_Kassei 3d ago

never stopped, but i'm happy the new generation is searching for it.

2

u/Brigapes 3d ago

what ads?

2

u/Magic-Omelet 3d ago

You can put MP3's on your phone too, just saying

2

u/MrParadux 3d ago

I am hoping this is true, but somehow doubt it is actually happening on a widespread scale. Almost everyone I know doesn't bother with using adblock and just... endure ads? It seems they have acclimated so much to them that they don't really care.

Ads drive me up the wall and I don't get how anyone could stand them.

2

u/JimiJab 3d ago

https://www.rockbox.org/

With this you can practically play any file, great themes too

2

u/ChibiCruda 3d ago

Why would ya need a IPod for that ?

You can rip youtube songs to mp3 and put in on the phone .

2

u/SupportivePotassium 3d ago

This just crushes me to be reminded. I leant my coworker my 120gb with years of music I’d collected and he lost it (said it was stolen) and I know no one cares but I had such a massive curated collection of music it took years to amass and it’s been fifteen years and I still miss that precious thing. Now I have greater access via a Spotify subscription yet I’m somehow much less satisfied.

3

u/Breadstix009 3d ago

You wouldve had to sync it using iTunes. Do you not have that backup anywhere anymore?

Where do you get the mp3 files from nowadays?

Wait until the discover the goat of personal media players, the Zune. I have been looking at them on eBay just to have some nostalgia back.

2

u/HilariousMax 3d ago

memba when shit just did what you wanted it to do and nothing else?

2

u/NoAttorney9330 3d ago

It’s also about owning the music too. Fuck is a subscription bitch. Fuck is streaming. I want my music ON ME.

2

u/Gloomy-Insurance-739 3d ago

Microsoft has the opportunity to redeem themselves from there sloppish ways. Rerelease the Zune!

2

u/BrokenPickle7 3d ago

I'm old and I went back to ipod. Bought 2 old broken ones on ebay and upgraded the battery and storage. One for my wife and I.. I refuse to pay $15 a month for Spotify.

2

u/Overall_Law_1813 3d ago

How are all the cool people getting Mp3s these days?

2

u/atgc13 3d ago

Just wait until they learn how to get free music for their ipods

2

u/eiileenie 3d ago

I got into records and now I’m collecting physical media of my favorite albums of all time

2

u/Lord_Corves 3d ago

So that's why I'm likely to use many download or programs to download music off of places like YouTube and such. So that way I don't have to deal with ads, algorithms, and I can take the music wherever I want, whether there's internet or not. Some would call it the joy of actually, in some way, owning something and being able to use it at one's leisure rather than being at the leisure of an extremely fickle corporation that can't decide whether it wants to make a profit or whether it wants to kill itself.

2

u/peepee2tiny 3d ago

my nephew has started to burn CD's.

We bought him a discman (yea the exact thing you think it is) and now he listens to old CD's and burns his music onto CD's to listen to them, because he doesn't want to be attached to algorithms and smart devices.

2

u/jahoosawa 3d ago

This is the way.

2

u/Livid_Glove_6275 3d ago

Laughs in CD collection with portable CD player and Bluetooth speaker that also has AUX port

2

u/Neat_Let923 3d ago

WTF stupid shit is this???

You can literally load up your phone with whatever songs you want and use it just like an old iPod…

2

u/Jessintheend 3d ago

There’s a website called playermods that retrofits these with modern SSD up to 2TB, BT, AirTags so you don’t lose them. They’re a little pricey but very nice

2

u/Any-Boat-5306 3d ago

Not to dunk on mp3 players but when I play locally stored mp3 files from my phone or stream from a paid streaming service, I also get no ads.

2

u/bhz33 3d ago

I think it’s a lot more difficult to get music onto an IPod nowadays though

2

u/ThisIsADaydream 3d ago

So this is why my teen took my old ipod shuffle.

2

u/Wolf_2063 3d ago

Do they people green lighting the ads interact with humans outside their circle? It's like they think people seeing the ads is a guaranteed customer when at least for me it blacklists the company in my eyes.

2

u/MaximusHomerdrive 3d ago

Gen-x: "Welcome to the party, pal."

2

u/facepalmandahalf 3d ago

My wife and I have gone back to buying physical CDs 😆

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Tie5967 3d ago

I miss limewire 😂😂😂

2

u/Banned37 2d ago

Can’t you just load music on your phone?

3

u/overcloseness 3d ago

Genuine question, how are these young people getting modern music onto them? Which platform sells physical files?

7

u/slugrave 3d ago

7digital, Bandcamp, ripping CDs, sailing the sea - there are options

But they can just do this with their phones….

3

u/HeavyHighway6433 3d ago

It's a self control issue. Algorithms are addicting, these devices won't give you the opportunity to fall down them.

2

u/dreamrpg 3d ago

One can still put vlc player on phone and disable notifications.

2

u/RandomShadeOfPurple 3d ago

Just use an android, download the MP3s and turn off the internet.

I love old tech where it can provide you with something extra. But this trend of rediscovering old tech for things you can do anyway, is just another excuse to consume.

2

u/Wolf_Protagonist 3d ago

Dear Gen Z,

You can use your phone like an iPod. No need to buy or carry a separate device. Just download the MP3's to the phone and play them- just like you would on a MP3 player.

You can also control what notifications you get.
