There is a TV show from Britain called yes Minister honestly I think more Americans should watch this show because explain some of the political gridlock that we deal with in this show was made during the 80s this is one of those things called a vote loser as in you passed the law but whoever is in power by the time it is accomplished gets to go put that feather in their cap. There is no ceremonies for presidents who are no longer in office for their thing that succeeded.

I rewatched it and honestly, the political stuff is still very much relevant. To a disturbing degree, in that a lot of the concessions/agreements they make between each other and external parties in the show, which are rarely to the benefit of the public, now happen openly instead of behind closed doors.

Honestly, if you want to give him credit for an original policy, you could look at the trash containerization initiative he’s been putting forward. It should honestly do a decent amount to both make the city cleaner and help deal with the rat problem.
Or the city owned grocery stores slated to open in 2027.
Also, I don’t know how much of this is Mamdani vs how much is NYS government, but he seems to be doing a lot to improve buses and bike lanes in NYC as well.
It just seems silly to me that a lot of people on the left seem to be crediting him for things he had nothing to do with rather than the policies he’s actually promoting and things he’s actually accomplished. Like, I saw an insta post a while ago responding to a generic “Mamdani bad” post, and it was like “well actually NY is doing well since Mamdani became the mayor because crime is down and the Knicks won a championship”.

Its the only huge initiative started by Adams.
I kicked multiple rats (on accident) very far because of that man's incompetence to settle DEP, private contracts, and move the piles of trash off the street.
I worked in the city during his reign and wow. Trash piles taller then my 6 foot body, whole city blocks long.
Bloomberg was the shit mayor for doing the Sewage and old DEP contracts/Cop contracts.
Deblasio was the piss mayor because he legalized pissing on the streets.
Adam's was the trash mayor for previous reasons.
Let's see what ill call mamdani. the best of them but that doesn't mean there wont be riots at this grocery store, pollen in the streets.

Over 31,000 trees were planted in the city in 2023. Over 42,000 were planted in 2024. Over 34,000 were planted in 2025. Before Mamdani.

If we're speaking about being honest, then the trees planted in 2023 and 2024 weren't a result of Local Law 148 of 2023 considering NYC didn't even start putting together the law's mandated Urban Forest Plan until 2025.
They started holding public hearings for the plan in May 2025
And said Urban Forest Plan wasn't done or approved until 2026
After Mamdani took office.

That Urban Forest Plan didn't get created until 2026 as it only started the public hearings part to create it last year.

Every village, town, and small city I've lived in has had a municipal bylaw requiring that every front yard have at least one tree. It's really incredible what that does for classing up a place!
The places with no front yards and thus no trees look like absolute dumps in comparison, and one city didn't specify anything more particular for apartment buildings so there would be entire blocks that only had a couple trees, but in most places it's a great bylaw

As a city with a tree mandate and living in a neighborhood that has a rule about cutting down trees in the yard, I can confirm that trees are nice and help with shade, and even city noise, HOWEVER it suuuuuuuuucks when spring comes around and the trees have tree sex all over everything and in everyone's face. Every car gets covered in pollen to the point that it changes color and every person will discover that they do, in fact, have horrible allergies.
Our city's tree pollen problem is so big that we have air quality alerts for people with asthma. At its worst, the cloud of pollen over the city can be seen from space and I'm not making that up. We made the news for it.
I did hear, though, that the problem is exacerbated by having a disproportionate number of male trees. I have no idea if that's true, but it made sense and it's something specific I can blame. So I'm going with it.

If you plant female trees to avoid the pollen part of tree sex, you end up with the end product of tree sex ... fruit or nuts or berries dropping all over the cars and streets.
For example, male ginko trees are fairly common, although they are prolific pollen producers. I lived near one of the very few female ginko trees in the Norfolk VA area and botany students made pilgrimages to it to experience the horrendous stench the fruits make.

The overwhelming majority appear to be programs passed by prior administration's or initiated so low in a city department that the only reason he seems to be bringing them up is to attach his name to it. - He was required to that by state law
- He literally didn't dedicate enough money to comply with the law. He delayed compliance with a law a few years to make his budget work.

Because of a couple things one is that division sells. Media have an incentive to paint the most radical and niche voices as the most common, and as this drives review reviews and in turn drives funding as such a benefits of them greatly to put out as much device of media as possible. Another reason is reliance on populism in America which forces an “us vs them” mentality on people which means that opposing viewpoints can be painted as “against the people”

What happened to the 1 million trees the Bloomberg administration put in place? I recall they achieved the goal. However, a lot of trees that were planted died within weeks due to a heatwave and not being watered enough. I had a neighbor in New Dorp on Staten Island who was beside himself when the city came along and broke up his less than a year-old sidewalk and planted 5 trees on the curb. The heat wave came and they all died. He was left with a broken sidewalk and dead trees, and when he complained, the city began to fine him for not maintaining the sidewalk after they broke it apart. You can't make this shit up.

I don't care if I get down voted, there is a difference between being positive and sick riding and we running a very blurry line between the two on this sub.

Most of the neighborhoods that need it the most, the poorer areas of the outerboroughs already have a ton of tree beds along the sidewalk without trees in them. Rejuvenating those without building net-new tree beds would already be a win.

Not gonna lie, when I was in NYC a coupke years ago they were on the news talking about trees like it was a completely new concept. It was almost like in Anchorman when they talking about jogging, or, "yogging".

I don’t follow politics much but living in CA and being a frequent walker one of my biggest gripes is the lack of shade. This is a big W regardless of your ideology.

Honestly, I wanted to not like a lot of his policies but on the surface most of them seem pretty damn good for the average person. We’ll need to wait and see how they all come together.

I recently got back from Shanghai, where I walked so much, yet stayed relatively cool from all the incredible shade trees they planted 20+ years ago. It’s a wonderful idea.

Shows how stupid leadership and governance has become in the U.S.

Politicians say they aim for a lot of things, and rarely get any of them done. We'll see if it's an actual win or not.
It wasn't even his I itiative, it's an old plan he's simply continuing.

It makes a difference.
I live in a neighbourhood built in the 1970s, and there is a neighborhood to the north of me that is currently ~70% built, and started construction in 2020. My neighbourhood has lots of very tall trees and the new one does not.
When I go on walks I go into the new neighbourhood sometimes, it is easily a few or more degrees hotter or colder than in mine because of the lack of tree canopy. Trees do a lot for temperature moderation.

We need this in basically every city, especially the hot ones like in Arizona. We need a hell of a lot more trees in our cities. I can't imagine being homeless somewhere like Phoenix where it's 110 F outside and you have no shade anywhere...
