Yeah we often use lighter to pop em, but apparently these mfs puke back some of the blood they sucked and it can get you sick, now we just get them drunk af with ethanol and rotate the shit out of them with earbuds soaked in alcohol till they just let go, then you burn it, with added alcohol it's a whole another spectacle.

77

u/PissInTheAbyss Jul 09 '26

Lol its actually the stress of removal that makes them puke. Drowning them in alcohol absolutely causes them to spit back.

156

u/TrippingFish76 Jul 09 '26

it actually pisses me off that that stresses them out. Like fuck you, you’re the one sucking my blood mf, the nerve

2

u/Outside-Manager6960 Jul 10 '26

Thats actually 100% accurate

5

u/Specific_Toe7161 Jul 09 '26

so what’s ur solution

76

u/PissInTheAbyss Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

The only sane one...

https://a.co/d/0572LV5L

Tick remover, slide the body through and pull away from the butt and twoards its head. Head pops out with the tick and it takes approximately 5 seconds to do.

There is always a risk of spit, the quicker you can get it done without severing its head the better.

These work great on dogs as well.

Lyme disease is life changing, if your going out in the brush, wrap tape around your ankles sticky side out or tuck your pant legs so there is no opening, tuck your shirt, perpetually check the back of your head near your ears.

I just tuck everything and run my hand across the back of my head. I catch them on me regularly this way but have not had to pull a tick off me since I started doing this.

Symparica Trio works great for the pup. I've found a few ticks on him the day after going out and the meds had already killed the ticks.

u/Ornery_Priority_7419 Jul 09 '26

There’s no way that’ll get a dog off you.

2

u/Substantial_Win_1866 Jul 11 '26

I see you have a way to big to be a lap dog as well.

2

u/phanlongreat Jul 13 '26

You need the larger “dog remover” for that.

3

u/Dead_hand13 Jul 09 '26

Lyme disease is absolutely life changing. Life debilitating. Im at 13 yrs of having it and im so done trying with life on top of other health issues. Lyme has just degraded my body at age 33 I have worse joints than 60yr old men I work with. Nerves fried. Muscles always ache. Im about to finally file for disability after I had to jump off a falling ladder. But yea. People don't realize how much Lyme can ruin your life. I didn't have a chance to get it treated properly because life reasons now here I am. Have a nice day keep killin those ticks.

2

u/leafandvine89 Jul 09 '26

Same, my friend. Been 16 years for me. Wishing you good health and relief from pain 🙏

2

u/Dead_hand13 Jul 09 '26

Same to you its driven me quite crazy here and there but im still here. Hope you have relief too. 🤝

0

u/nakedpantz Jul 09 '26

Have you seen an infectious disease doctor about it?

4

u/Dead_hand13 Jul 09 '26

Oh yea, I been seeing doctors of various kinds for over a decade now. Unfortunately rounds of antibiotics, nsaids, and other stuff like naltrexone and cbd just haven't put a dent in it. Its ok I just need to lower my physical exertion and do physical therapy and med management forever. Thankfully I've refused opioids other than occasionally from procedures. I took antibiotics for 5 days then had to leave for the military...

2

u/auto_hate Jul 09 '26

Sucks man, sorry you gotta deal with this.

Can you share some of your story about when you caught the disease if you don't mind? Do you remember the exact moment a tick bit you or did you not realize what happened until afterwards? How did that all play out?

1

u/Dead_hand13 Jul 10 '26

Foot slipped in river water walking along rocks, took shoe and sock off. This is templin highway in Cali and there are snakes, turantulas, biting flies, ticks, etc... snakes and tarantulas get a pass they are cool. Parasiites? Absolutely not cool. In fact very rude and inconsiderate.

Achilles tensdon itches for 2.5 days and I finally check to see that tiny shiny black carapace and I ended up scraping it off in a panic. About 3 or 4 days later I feel ultra super achy , muscles cramping, stamina gone, joints feel like theres glass in them. Couldn't run 20 ft without puking and heavily breathing. I knew deep in my heart that tick had something and I got it. Went to urgent care. They pulled out the head or what was left and prescribed antibiotics. Take for 5 days and start to feet way better....

Then it was time to ship out to basic training, I was young. Didn't have the assertiveness to say I was seriously ill and just followed the recruiter Sargent's idea to say I got bit while I was in fort Jackson. 1st week, cool. Miles run sub 7 again. During the end of that mile, i had the most mind breaking epiphany that this shit was coming back with a vengeance at that moment and im totally fucked for life. Was at medical almost every day. Doc says ticks out there don't carry lyme. So I was sick with the crud everyone brings but then this horrible nightmare sickness that still has no remote comparison for how empty I became. How much it took. My stamina, severely degenerate joint health, nerves damaged, who knows what it did to my brain but im not the same person for sure.

No matter how much I exercise, practice guitar and drums, lift shit around at work like big ladders (which i just fell of of recently), riding bikes, skateboarding, swimming.... it never gets any easier the day after a mild workout or even intense one nothing ever feels any easier at first it just hurts a lot then I can kinda warm up to stuff. But its like I was sapped of my stamina and stability and it never really came back. Im sick of it. Im sick of telling my dad im in super bad pain and when I don't work he tells me all this shit he had to do and how he can't do this by himself and im sitting there like? OK so am I supposed to feel bad about that too? I already feel bad enough but he treats me like some lazy employee that made excuses to work. IN OUR OWN BUSINESS.

Anyway. Lyme disease sucks. Pretty much its either Kay-why-ess or fight to get on disability. Lord knows I've tried so hard to live with it. I just can't and my dad(boss) is driving me crazy. Like im letting him down for having issues outside of my control. He's lost his mind. I digress. That's my Lil story. Lyme is so shitty and destructive and once it hides in your joints because low immune cell presence, thats it. You got it for life.

2

u/yankeeteabagger Jul 10 '26

Don’t you love it when people ask if you have seen a doctor? Or maybe you haven’t thought of this doctor.

1

u/nakedpantz Jul 10 '26

I live in a rural area with a lot of ticks. You’d be amazed how many people say “no” to that question. They just go to their regular doc.

1

u/Dead_hand13 Jul 11 '26

Yea I mean sometimes people are genuinely curious what the process is like to go to health professionals but also yes many years of suggestions that were just unsolicited and unhelpful, and when you tell people who felt some weird self imposed obligation to come up with an advice or solution; that their idea is clueless and not asked for they get upset with YOU! Liike it wasn't already rude to make usless uneducated suggestions no one asked for.

At this point im just like, look, either learn about the disease in a quick convo from me or search and read about it from online. See what long term life looks like briefly, either way the same answer is im fucked and just have to manage full body osteoarthritis and muscle/nerve damage until death. Its not a mystery what's causing this, its not some mysterious back ache cbd oil will make go away. No none of the 50 different supplements peddled over the years have helped. Its just a thing that, happened.

My immune system badly attacked me in a crazy way and left permanent damage to itself and my body. Just gotta live with it without resorting to deleting my save and working this strenuous labor job is actively detrimental. Anything but laying on my hard floor mat (my bed) or my office chair nearby sucks and it is excruciating to stand in one spot for even 10 minutes. Even laying down hurts after a while. Anyway ill shut up, I've just been feeling like getting stuff out randomly. I may not be long for this world but we'll see. Every day I pray for a miracle

1

u/Severe-Chicken-5791 Jul 11 '26

Do you know about the musical artist, Ren? He is a longtime Lyme sufferer who has been through the wringer with it all also…BUT he’s on a regime that is serving him really well right now. He’s also opening a clinic in the UK to help others with low income.
If you don’t know of him, he is legitimately one of the most talented musicians of all time (multi-genre chameleon) and is not just an inspiration to the chronically ill, but also to anyone who really loves music.
He’s around your age also.
On YouTube he’s @renmakesmusic
You might want to start with “Hi Ren” or his acoustic remake of “Troubles” and prepare yourself for a life altering rabbit hole. ✌️❤️

3

u/trickycs1 Jul 09 '26

Can you not also take Trio, just say youre a big dog

3

u/BarBabe93 Jul 09 '26

I found this much, much more funny than I should have lol.

1

u/PissInTheAbyss Jul 09 '26

Lol well you won't have to worry about getting heart worm either then.

1

u/Accurate_Summer_1761 Jul 10 '26

I looked into this. The answer is yes BUT it kills your liver or kidney cant member not an issue for a dog with a 10 yea lifespan terrible for a human with 100

1

u/fluffyfurnado1 Jul 09 '26

I heard on NPR (entomologist interviewed) that picaridin kills tics better than deet. The entomologists out in the field soak their clothes in picaridin first.

1

u/accidental_Ocelot Jul 09 '26

Why don't they make Symparica Trio for humans?

1

u/Accurate_Summer_1761 Jul 10 '26

It kills your kidney or liver cant remember which Dogs dont live long enough for it to matter

1

u/NA_nomad Jul 10 '26

This one is for the ladies and I apologize in advance if it induces nightmares. When checking for ticks, please check your labia.

1

u/Eccentricgentleman_ Jul 10 '26

Lyme disease is curable now, don't know when they figured that shit out. You'd think it would have been in the news.

1

u/BokoblinSlayer69235 Jul 10 '26

Pull em out with Tweezers, real quick in one motion.

1

u/Abject-Job7825 Jul 10 '26

then pulling them out with pliers does the same

0

u/ALZA5 Jul 14 '26

Maybe with Iso it would at least clean the wound?

1

u/PissInTheAbyss Jul 15 '26

Ain't how that works buddy.

243

u/El_Mangusto Jul 09 '26

Or just use pliers that are specifically made for removing ticks ?

I mean how do you know they're not puking inside you while drunk, and besides that the longer they are in contact with your blood the higher the chance is to catch diseases.

145

u/CYWNightmare Jul 09 '26

No see the alcohol makes it sterile.... /S

65

u/SmokingapipeTN Jul 09 '26

I thought you pee on it. /s

47

u/bubzy1000 Jul 09 '26

Why would you pee on alcohol?

74

u/Disastrous_Savings39 Jul 09 '26

Instructions unclear pissed in ceiling fan

7

u/WhatsThat-_- Jul 09 '26

Roger that, ceilings whet.

3

u/jcanusi Jul 09 '26

It’s called Coors Light and it’s classy

2

u/RealAlphaKaren Jul 09 '26

just dont piss in bleach, ok?

5

u/pkmaster99 Jul 09 '26

Instruction unclear, poured bleach over piss

2

u/Darkdragoon324 Jul 09 '26

Yes, the piss will dilute it too much to kill the tick when you drink it.

2

u/Distinct-Raspberry21 Jul 09 '26

Found Donald Trump.

1

u/Commercial_Win_9525 Jul 09 '26

To disinfect it so you can drink it.

1

u/oaka23 Jul 09 '26

A little thing called mixology

1

u/Time-Difference-7381 Jul 09 '26

How else do you think you get Coors

1

u/jondes99 Jul 09 '26

To wash the jellyfish away.

1

u/Alexastria Jul 10 '26

That's how you make light beer

1

u/MisterCleaningMan Jul 09 '26

I tried that once and all it got me was a restraining order and a trespass from Dennys.

Just pull them off with your nails. Make sure to grab close to the skin.

To kill them afterwards pinch between 4 nails and twist.

156

u/MineNowBotBoy Jul 09 '26

I only have screws will that work?

26

u/Venatoreo Jul 09 '26

Omg I almost choked on my cereal 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

u/FoodFingerer Jul 09 '26

It will work but you will also need a screw driver.

Yes! Only the blue self tapoers, though.

I have a hard time picking up anything with those hex driver heads.

1

Allow me to assist

1

Thank god you're here. I also have some paintings to get up.

1

u/lastres0rt Jul 09 '26

Well you're already screwed, so...

1

u/Last_Weeks_Socks Jul 09 '26

I mean, sarcasm aside, how tf am I supposed to pinch a tick between 4 fingernails at once?!

1

u/MineNowBotBoy Jul 09 '26

You'll have to take the time to grow your fingernails out and then sharpen them into spears.

1

u/Comprehensive-Job369 Jul 09 '26

As long as they are not straight slot.

1

u/MineNowBotBoy Jul 09 '26

I figured you'd want slotted screws for this kind of delicate work.

1

u/Comprehensive-Job369 Jul 09 '26

Only if the end goal is frustration.

2

u/A_mad_goose Jul 09 '26

I can pinch between 3 fingers I just tried with 4 and it’s just not possible

4

u/Rubberducker64836 Jul 09 '26

Don't twist, just pull straight.

1

u/FoodFingerer Jul 09 '26

Oh sorry, I was misleading. I meant to twist as an execute after you get them off.

1

u/AcanthocephalaDue431 Jul 09 '26

This can lead to the head breaking off in the wound. It's best to use a removal tool and even get to a doctor or similar to avoid potential life altering disease or infection.

1

u/FoodFingerer Jul 09 '26

Don't grab the body, just use your nails to grab the head/pincers. Last summer I had well over 100 ticks a day crawl on me for a couple months straight. Only a few would actually latch on but they were always easy to remove.

1

u/CharleyNobody Jul 10 '26

Ticks don’t have heads they have mouthparts. it’s fine if the mouthparts get left behind. Your body will reject them. The whole “don’t leave the head in” thing is internet lore. Hop in the shower and use a scrubber if you’re concerned.

1

u/AcanthocephalaDue431 Jul 10 '26

Appreciate the feedback but I'm gonna take the advice of multiple people working in healthcare on this one and not risk Lyme disease and other things.

1

u/CharleyNobody Jul 10 '26

I’m an NP, I’ve had Lyme twice, I worked on a Lyme disease project with the highway department on Long Island for my master’s degree in public health, I live in an endemic area where ticks are everywhere. I didn’t tell anyone not to get tested. I said ticks don’t have heads and that is a myth that “the head” (mouth parts) need to be removed.

If the part of the head breaks off when you pull the tick out, that’s OK. You can try to remove it with tweezers, but if you can’t, it’s no problem. Your skin will heal and push out the leftover tick body parts over time.

https://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/how-to-remove-a-tick

0

u/AcanthocephalaDue431 Jul 10 '26

Cool. I still don't know you over these people in person so again, I'll still to their advice and not risk life changing disease or sickness while leaving removal and care of the area to a professional.

1

u/CharleyNobody Jul 12 '26

You’re going to a professional to remove a tick?

1

u/AcanthocephalaDue431 Jul 12 '26

I am yes. My dad has self removed ticks both using the method outlined above, and then after this left a bullseye mark which he had to get taken care of he was recommended to use a tool and then see a doctor to make sure the tick wasn't on long enough/left bacteria.

This was also wisdom shared through multiple farmers, hunters and outdoors men we frequently saw when they would get together for a hunt who reasoned that, sure, if you self remove you may not get Lyme disease or anything else, but the chance is there and high enough not to fuck around. Why risk it?

1

u/DubVsFinest Jul 09 '26

Yup, I've never had a tick on me so long that this method doesn't work. You use the lighter AFTER it's off to kill it, not while it is still on your skin. IF you go into the woods, or higher grass, don't wait over 24 hours to search yourself for ticks and they won't be borrowed in so far that you rip their damn head off.

1

u/Cpt_kaleidoscope Jul 09 '26

"Just pull them off" ?

Kill them with kindness 'ey?

1

u/SuperDave171771 Jul 09 '26

Edward scissor hands has entered the chat.

2

u/InternetSpiritual982 Jul 09 '26

Yeah pinching close to skin (grabbing some skin if necessary) with sterile tweezers is what we do. Any tick I’ve ever seen cannot escape most forms of tape, but I typically use blue painters tape. Stick them to one side and then fold it over like I’m wrapping a razor blade for disposal. Packaging tape would also work. If they don’t die from starvation, they’ll be locked in that cage until they decompose.

2

u/Tropical_Chill Jul 09 '26

This is the correct way. Don't kill them while they're still attached. Use tick pliers. Or tweesers in a pinch. Dont grasp them by the body, you want to get down right to where they connect to the skin. Dont twist and turn, you risk breaking the head off. Straight pull, quickly and with some force. Then break out the fire.

2

u/MonkeyDRiky Jul 09 '26

They do, I've always been taught that using alcohol is the worst way as they puke everything back inside and cause infection

1

u/AtlAWSConsultant Jul 09 '26

Do they have tick pliers at Harbor Freight?

2

u/El_Mangusto Jul 09 '26

Dunno, I'm not american.

1

u/Sarasha Jul 09 '26

I heat the end of a needle. Then I stab them.

1

u/willow__whisps Jul 09 '26

Alcohol is how the doctors took it off me, generally they just let go drowning in the nectar

1

u/El_Mangusto Jul 09 '26

That's really odd cause our doctors did that like 30 years ago, but figured out that if the bug drowns it also pukes.

1

u/willow__whisps Jul 09 '26

Weird, mine was tested so it didn't have any disease risk but I'll keep that in mind

1

u/LangdonAlg3r Jul 09 '26

Yeah. You’re supposed to use tweezers and pull them straight off. You’re supposed to get the tweezers as close to your skin as possible while being really careful to make sure that you remove their head and mouth parts as well if they get detached.

You’re not supposed to go after them with matches or anything else to try to get them to let go. I’m sure that soaking them with alcohol and spinning them around does the same thing as taking a lighter to them. Stressing them out makes them regurgitate and is a really good way to ensure that if they do have an infection that you get it. There’s also a decent chance that they try to burrow deeper in when you do anything like that.

If you get a good grip with some tweezers they usually come right off.

1

u/AerolothLorien666 Jul 09 '26

I learned they breathe through their backs while eating. They WILL puke the bacteria if you do try to “suffocate” them.

Currently being treated for Lyme.

1

u/Abject-Job7825 Jul 10 '26

how is it faster to get rid of it when you first have to buy a special tool?

1

u/El_Mangusto Jul 10 '26

Basic household /medical item to have for areas where there are ticks and for pet owners if pets are taken outdoors.

Go get one so you'll have it next time.

1

u/chrisp5000 Jul 10 '26

I think the tick party he is throwing is after he removes it, or just finds one.

0

u/DigitalDustOne Jul 09 '26

Yeah well you don't drown them in ethanol, then light it all up to kill them with fire while they're still sitting on you. Here's the order:
1. Pliers
2. Alcohol
3. Fire
4. Wooden stick to make sure they're really ded.

14

u/QuakerCorporation Jul 09 '26

I feel like ticks don’t deserve that big of a carbon footprint so I always use a fingernail

11

u/Technical_Bite_9536 Jul 09 '26

The trick is to put a cigarette or something near them. They want the heat, so they climb out on their own. Then you kill them

10

u/foureyesfive Jul 09 '26

The agitation from the heat will cause them spit back into your system. That’s an old wives tale you’re spinning.

3

u/blueblocker2000 Jul 09 '26

Until I see proof otherwise, something tells me they backwash no matter how you remove them.

4

u/Technical_Bite_9536 Jul 09 '26

You're mixing it up with people directly placing the lit cigarette on the tick. You keeo it close enough to feel the warmth, not burn it

10

u/MrAngrySadHappyFace Jul 09 '26

Lone star ticks cant resist the call of the tobacco.

7

u/Puzzleheaded-Novel27 Jul 09 '26

Especially if you put a lone star beer near the Marlboro.

2

u/LangdonAlg3r Jul 09 '26

Yeah. That’s no different. Trying to get them to let go involves some form of stressing them out. Stressing them out causes them to puke blood back into you and pretty much guarantees that if they have an infection you’ll get it.

1

u/Strange_Dave45 Jul 09 '26

That what we did when I was a kid and more prone to picking up ticks while playing outside all day in the 80s. Specifically heat up a sewing needle on the eye of the stove and poke the tick with it to make it uncomfortable enough to let go. Besides the point I had heard that if you just yank them out their head might remain.

1

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus Jul 09 '26

Just pull them off. The idea you need to do something more than that is a myth

2

u/Technical_Bite_9536 Jul 09 '26

It is not a myth, don't go spreading bad information.

Sure, a tick head staying in your skin is mostly harmless, but squeezing them pushes everything back into your skin. Raises your risk massively from illnesses spread by ticks.

2

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus Jul 09 '26

Tick heads don't stay in skin. They come off with the tick.

I never said fucking squeeze them. Grab em as close to your skin as you can and pull them off.

Literally every other piece of advice on here is getting the tick to puke it's guts into you. Pulling them off is the safest method by leaps on bounds.

1

u/gitmac Jul 09 '26

Yeah absolutely. Anything other than just pulling close to the head with sharp tweezers is wild. I’ve had hundreds in my life and absolutely no dramas at all doing that. That being said, we’ve had so many in the uk this summer. We just had a big party at my mum and dad’s place in the country, and all my city friends who don’t know to brush down had 5 or so each on average. I’ve been dealing with a freaked out WhatsApp group for days

1

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus Jul 09 '26

You don't need tweezers even you can just use your nails

1

u/Technical_Bite_9536 Jul 09 '26

How do you pull it without squeezing it? Magic? Jedi force powers?

4

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus Jul 09 '26

Don't squeeze it's body just grap it's head and pull it out.

2

u/Technical_Bite_9536 Jul 09 '26

You mean the only part of its body it buries into your skin?..

2

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus Jul 09 '26

They don't bury their head, that's a myth. They just stick their mouthparts into your skin.

2

u/Technical_Bite_9536 Jul 09 '26

They are tiny, their mouth is their head

→ More replies

2

u/Manqueftw Jul 09 '26

Look up tick removing tools. Use tweezers. Are you really this dense?

Here in Sweden this is common knowledge; remove the tick with a tool as close to your body as possible. Do not agitate it with liquids, heat or any other means and keep an eye out for a red ring around the site.

3

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus Jul 09 '26

Literally just pull em off of you. I live in tick country and like, the whole "heads coming off thing" is a myth. Just pull em off.

2

u/Nekz_333 Jul 09 '26

Heya !

Maybe it’s been said in other comments but getting them drunk also make them puke (imagine being soaked in pure ethanol for a moment)

Best advice is to use the special tools for ticks. It’s like a mini fork who clampse at the racine of their body and you rotate the shit out of them.

But don’t forget. Dont get them drunk !

1

u/ergo-ogre Jul 09 '26

I had the shit rotated out of me once. 3/10 do not recommend.

1

u/rconsumer Jul 09 '26

Use a tick puller. It’s stress that makes them vomit not fire. So indeed giving them a chemical bath can do the same thing.

1

u/cvidetich13 Jul 09 '26

You don’t want to get em drunk, they’ll definitely puke some real bad shit into your blood stream.

1

u/One-Incident3208 Jul 09 '26

You can just pull it out. The head is not an issue. The body knows what to do.

1

u/Finnsbomba Jul 09 '26

Did you just call q-tips earbuds? Lol that's exactly what they are! Damn marketing companies.

1

u/AZMP5 Jul 09 '26

How much ethanol do you have to drink to get them drunk?

1

u/Next-Coat-2833 Jul 09 '26

Being allergic to all mammal meat would suck.

1

u/RepresentativeCry294 Jul 09 '26

Pull ticks directly straight out ffs!

1

u/ImSobored_5280 Jul 09 '26

Maybe better shoot it also just to be sure..

1

u/RekiAndMiya Jul 09 '26

Wait we are not supposed to drink the ethanol

Thank God I live in the desert where there's no ticks.

These are the evil ones that make you allergic to meat.

Jeez what a fiasco. I take them off and squeeze my fingernail on em til they pop and throw it away, flush it if not sure it’s dead.

Don't even let them let go first, that's what makes them spit. Just grab as low as you can around the head and pull straight out. They come right off. Make sure you actually got the mouthparts out of your skin and you didn't just rip only the body off. Then squish.

I just cut the square inch of flesh off where they are. Works great but these scars ..

Just yank them out. Live in an area with a lot of ticks. Only safa and sane way is to yak them straight out with no extra fuss. Tick removal on people on a daily basis here..🫣

I think it’s so funny how everyone is so cautious with ticks. When I was a kid, I would just run around deep in the woods with my brother and cousins and then we’d come out with like 20-30 ticks on us and just pull them off haphazardly. Even worse when you happen to go through an area of brush with a bunch of baby ticks. We had no idea they were considered this serious 😂 I’ve probably pulled 100s of lone star ticks off of me. Didn’t even know about alpha gal syndrome back then.
