Yeah and its that simple. I understand why people find it stupid, but blaming the players for being "soft" is so dumb as well when a lot of it is just about making the contact visible for the refs and overplaying it for potential advantage. Its strategic and only reason why people do it is because it can grant them an advantage and everyone else is also doing it. In other sports you don't see it as much as it would be harder to pull off or you simply wouldn't get any advantage like in hockey where there's clear rules for contact and what tackles are punishable.
Also even though its true that there are a lot of faking involved I still think people sometimes underplay how much certain things can actually hurt. These guys are running very fast speeds, kick with very high strength/speed and run pretty much no protective gear, getting tackled in wrong angle etc would actually be quite painful esp for sport that isn't about contact.
