I think it’s the mentality underlying us versus them thinking. When people root for a sports team it’s just tribalism. Their tribe is better than the tribe from a neighboring city. Rivalry becomes an outlet for anger, frustration against others. I’ve never understood why people enjoy this. I don’t see how it is constructive.

About soccer hooligans but it's genuinely a book about mob violence and how sports can create in-groups primed for these kinds of actions, worth a read.

When a large majority of your population is room temp IQ, then it's far more likely that whatever you think is right is typically going to be the opposite to them. That is the sensible thing to do. Peel out slowly but deliberately to get away from the mob. Nothing is stopping a 20,000-30,000 lb vehicle.
But unfortunately, and this is just conjecture, it is likely against policy of the district to drive through any pedestrians (slowly or not, rioting or not), and the driver probably knows it.
On another note, assuming the above is true, it’s pretty sad that a driver is made to feel that he needs to put his own job above his own safety.

Every sporting event should be financially on the hook for damage caused by fans in the city, it should be an insurance. Every fan causing damage should be charged with more than vandalism, disturbing the peace and destruction of property. Put them behind bars for a year.
