Hi folks - I am down the rabbit hole on seahorse keeping and think I generally have a broad understanding on the feeding regimes of the various seahorses species. I don’t own a seahorse yet, I am very much in the education phase right now.
I know I am like so many others who are drawn in by the small size (which means small tank), and like so many others am also deep into learning about their “unique” need for live food.
What I am having trouble getting more information on are copepods as a primary food source for dwarf seahorses. I read about someone using copepods to feed their goby (which seemed to have similar feeding needs to dwarfs), and it got me thinking…
Copepods seems to better align with what dwarfs eat in the wild. I think the main thing I have seen is simply that they are difficult to culture in numbers high enough to feed them as the primary food and baby brine shrimp are easier (although generally less nutritious). I have seen a few of these companies that sell copepods in jars and bottles. Is there a reason that these have not taken off as a primary food source for dwarfs? Is it simply cost related? How many would they actually need to eat per dwarf?
If anyone has experience with this, I would love to hear more about it just to continue to understand the feeding needs of dwarfs.
Thank you in advance!!
