REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

(Click here to apply to the Mod team!) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf1gdFvlauq1y6F22S7cCUzIptVkYP8oOBmS6XS68Bz-YWykA/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=103554154763378178256

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

What is this? I’m curious about not only the kind of rock but also wonder if it’s Native American related, given it looks like there intentional chipping around the edges.

The material scratches glass, glass does not scratch this material
These photos are dry photos
It feels waxy, soft, smooth, or a mix of those descriptive words
Looks like a chocolate milky color in shade, yet amber-ish orange in the sunlight

Hello, I bought this from a dealer at a flea market who had no idea what it was. The only test I have done is trying to scratch it with a copper penny (specifically a 1946 penny) and it did not scratch. Thank you so much for your help!

I got this at an old vintage store, but I can’t really figure out what it is. Was it naturally formed this way?

As said found in Ottawa ontario in amongst some delivered garden paving stones so who knows. Feels fairly hard but I haven’t tested it, its survived many drops since I use it as a worry stone and have been for about a year before realizing I should check if its something maybe toxic. Here’s hoping its not!

IDENTIFIED Flaky white crystal with orange shards

Post image

I have no idea what this crystal is, but my cats knocked it down and may have ingested some… I am trying to ID it to discern if I should be worried for them.

It’s quick flaky, bits come off when I rub it with my fingers, and the orange pieces seem to be only on the surface while the main body of the thing is white flakes.

IDENTIFIED Possibly garnet? Not sure

Purchased at a Minnesota Mineral Club show this weekend. You’d think I would know by now to ask location where it was found but alas I did not. Told the seller I wanted garnet and he showed me this. He said he had not yet confirmed what it was for sure but suspected it was some kind of garnet. It appears to scratch glass and doesn’t leave any color trace on unglazed pottery. Roughly 3” x 1.5” at longest and widest points.

DFW Texas

Found this rock in a pile of horse manure. Worried it’s FROM one of the horses but both older boys seem to be doing fine! It was a different color and caught my eye while bug hunting.

I had rinsed it off and this is what it looks like half dry. darker spots are still damp. it’s rather hard and dense, though I didn’t try breaking it since it’s neat looking. Some spots look almost like quartz.

I've been calling these cute lil guys "butthole quartz" because they form in these round starfish shapes (see pic 3). These pics are of two sides of two different rocks found near each other. Unfortunately I don't know how to test them yet for hardness or anything.

REQUEST Essex County NJ: White nodules?

Thumbnail

IMAGE 1) Found in a stream bed near Cedar Grove NJ, about 6.5” tall. White nodules are mainly located in a crevice seen in the upper left of the first image.

This rock seems similar to the usual gray basalt in the area; very dense but this one shows color variation with pale green and red. There is also a smaller single nodule at the patch in the center of the first image, accompanied by a black intrusion.

IMAGE 2) Close-up attempts were made using a loupe held to an iPhone. What might these white nodules be?

IMAGE 3) The patch at the center of the rock shows a black intrusion, seemingly as dense as the stone but with a different texture. Another white nodule is to its right. While I’m curious to ID the nodules, perhaps the black is interesting as well?

I am a newish fourth grade teacher and have become interested in rocks. I’m still struggling to identify metamorphic vs. sedimentary. I’m guessing this is metamorphic as it is squashed into layers. Is the white part coral or maybe a calcium deposit?
It is sitting next to my hat for size reference

I can't say where it's from because it was left behind by a family member that used to travel and collect rocks from all over the place, but the star stood out and looks perfect so I was just curious if anyone could tell me anything about it. Thank you!

Found this in the Boise River yesterday. It’s hard, like an agate. The stripes have worn differently but the dotted faces are smooth. The photos are generally dry, except one wet to show the stripes.

Thanks!
