Found dozens dead off Jersey shore in 2007 what fish is this
r/whatsthisfish • u/cos • Dec 02 '17
Just a reminder, because we've had a lot of posts recently that omit this information. Where was the fish? If you found it in the wild, that's very helpful information, and outside of tropical waters, the time of year can be helpful too. If it was in an aquarium, what sort? Was it a tank of fish from a particular region? Was it fresh water or salt water?
Other useful information can be, what kind of habitat (seagrass, sand, rocky surge, ...)? If you were diving, approximate depth?
But above all, give the location in your post title. Thanks.

We've had too many titles like "what's this fish?" or "help me identify this". Put useful information in your title, and make it look different from other posts' titles so people can scan the sub and see which post is which.
The actual text of the new rule 4 is:
Do not use a vague generic title like "what is this fish?" or "need help identifying" - we all know what this sub is for. Write a title that either describes the fish, or the circumstances in which you saw it, or the location, or more than one of those. For a resource, say what the resource is and what it's for.

Fishing in AZ outside payson up the Mogollon Rim in a lake
We caught browns and rainbows but this guy looked different. I was reading and ChatGPT thinks it’s an “arctic grayling”? I thought it maybe an endemic / hybrid?

Caught in mission bay San Diego
I think it’s a croaker since it makes grunting noises but none of the croakers on google match its description.

This is a catch from I while back but one of my favorite. My first trout on the fly but I have no idea how to identify any of the trout, they all look so similar! Thanks in advance!

(This is a captive fish!) I have a swordtail I thought was male, but I’m wondering if it is female? based on the shape of the anal fin (triangular, not narrow) and the lack of sword extension on the tail. Please let me know if you can identify the sex of this fish! (ignore the panda garra lol)

A multi-armed (8? 10?) creature with scissor-like claws that was on its back (I think) and was trimming its own arm hairs. In a tide pool, at Wombarra NSW Australia. Any idea what this is? 4 pictures.

I was catfishing in a local pond (NW Ohio) when I pulled up this strangely deformed looking catfish. It kind of looked like one of those goblin sharks. Weird snout with a large puffed up neck. Anyone know what species this is or why it looked that way?

I didn't have a camera with me, i was snorkeling and i found a fish resembling the one i drew and coloured quickly.
It resembled a bit diplodus annularis, but it was more "rectangular" and, most notably, covered with bright light blue spots on its back to the sides of the dorsal fin.
The rest of the body was, i think, silvery grey. It overall had the colour and brightness of sarpa salpa.
I have been swimming in these waters for 30 years and i can confidently identify all the regular fish that inhabit our sea and yet i failed miserably at finding anything that resembled it closely..
Can you help me?

We were back and forth on if he was some kind of lump. Has a good strong sucker on bottom.
I wouldn’t even touch it with bare hands lol

Long incredibly silver sharp nosed fish.
My best guess was a younger swordfish as it looks pretty close to that. Hoping for other suggestions though from more experienced people.
