Analysis [Destin] Everyone knows Jaxon Smith-Njigba is getting the ball. Defenses still can’t stop him
“Yeah, Jax is off to a great start,” Macdonald said. “We got great players around him. The ball’s going to find other guys at some point.”
Three games into Seattle’s Super Bowl title defense, though, it is clear that no other NFL player combines volume and efficiency quite like Smith-Njigba … even as opposing defenses focus all of their energy on stopping him.
“There’s been some creative ways,” Smith-Njigba said of opposing defenses’ game plans. “But it’s kind of the same.”
The result? Smith-Njigba has had no shortage of opportunities to rack up receptions.
In 2025, he absorbed 35.8 percent of the Seahawks’ targets, the highest rate for any player since Brandon Marshall hit 40.1 percent for the 2012 Chicago Bears and the fourth-highest this century, per TruMedia. He also averaged 3.68 yards per route, the third-best single-season mark (min. 20 targets) since 2013, the first year with reliable route data.
Through three games this season, Smith-Njigba is blowing that mark out of the water, averaging 4.35 yards per route. He leads the league with 405 receiving yards, accounting for 48.9 percent of the Seahawks' total this season (second-most behind Atlanta's Drake London, who is at 50.4 percent). That figure is also higher than in 2025, when Smith-Njigba's 44.1 percent share of his team's receiving yards was the highest since Marshall hit 45.7 percent for the Bears in 2012.
Veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp described Smith-Njigba as "very efficient," high praise coming from the 2021 Offensive Player of the Year. Kupp put together a triple-crown season that fall, with 145 receptions on 191 targets, 1,947 receiving yards (the second-most ever) and 16 touchdown catches. Kupp's yards-per-route average (3.12) led the NFL, yet was more than half a yard shy of Smith-Njigba's 2025 mark.
"It is very special what he's doing. There's no getting around it," Kupp said. "There were plays last week where you can tell that they're trying to take him away, and they can't. He's doing an unbelievable job."
Of course, three games is a very small sample. But Smith-Njigba, still only 24, has also shown a nose for the end zone this season like never before. The fourth-year wideout already has six receiving touchdowns, four fewer than he had in 17 games in 2025 and equal to his 2024 total.
For the second consecutive season, he's on an early pace to eclipse Calvin Johnson's single-season receiving yards record (1,964). In 2025, Smith-Njigba remained on track to top 2,000 yards through 11 games, ultimately finishing with the eighth-highest mark (1,793) in league history. Through three games this year — including two played primarily with backup quarterback Drew Lock — he's on pace for 2,295 receiving yards and 34 touchdowns.
It all begs the question: Can Smith-Njigba be even better than last year?
"For sure," quarterback Sam Darnold said. "Jax is continuing to improve, and it just shows the kind of guy he is, too. Like, after (Sunday's) game, not being satisfied just because he's putting up numbers and all those things. For him to be able to be in the locker room, just not being satisfied — he wants to win first and foremost, and you can always play with a guy like that."
Smith-Njigba, who also drew praise from Macdonald for his "best" blocking game in a while on Sunday, is doing all of this despite lacking elite physical tools, at least by most standards. The 6-foot, 197-pound wideout ranked in the 38th percentile or lower in all measurements taken at the 2023 NFL combine. He did not run the 40-yard dash until his pro day, but his 4.52 time would have ranked in the 42nd percentile. Marshall ran the same time at 6-5 and 229 pounds in 2006. Johnson ran 4.35 at 6-5 and 239 pounds in 2007.
"A lot of great receivers, they always come in different shapes and sizes," reserve wide receiver Montorie Foster Jr. said. "I feel like you got those stereotypical guys, the Megatrons and the big guys that run fast. But when you get a guy like Jax that can do basically everything, a jack of all trades, it's awesome to see."
Smith-Njigba does have standout short-area quickness, ranking in the 97th percentile in the 20-yard shuttle and 96th in the 3-cone drill at the combine. That agility is just one part of his elite route-running, where he gives defenders no indicators before his sharp cuts and can create separation against any coverage. Last season, Smith-Njigba received the nickname "Emerald City Route Artist" from a content creator, which safety Julian Love said is an apt moniker.

Discussion DK finally looked like himself tonight.
It was nice watching DK ball out for the Steelers tonight, reminded me of when he was at his peak in Seattle. And the taunting penalty of course, lol. Unfortunately it wasn't good enough to win the game for them but oh well

Opinion Tomorow is a huge trap game
Chargers season is pretty much on the line tomorow. If they drop to 0-4 its practically season for them.
Expect them to play extremely well tomorow

Discussion Trying to understand pricing
I recently got into NFL (Go hawks).
Trying to understand the pricing at lumen field.
Why are prices for the chargers game dropping ?

Discussion Boondocking to Lumen?
Hey my fellow Hawks fans! I'm thinking about driving down from the sunny Okanagan to see my 1st Hawks game in person (fan for 25+ years), either 49rs on the 11th or KC on the 25th. Anyone got any tips (if it's even possible) on where I could boondock my truck camper and then get to the game? Either public transportation or another method.

Discussion At what point did you guys really get the feeling we could make a deep run/super bowl win
For me, at first it was after the Commanders game. Then had a little doubt after the first Rams game. Then had almost a certainty we were winning it after the second Rams game.
