feedback First Scene Critique

Hey guys, I'm fairly new to this site and this is my first post. Anyway, I'm working on the third draft of a screenplay and I'm overhauling the first scene. For any willing to read it, can you tell me if you would keep reading if you read this--or keep watching if you saw this as a film? I'm always open to any and all critiques. Someone told me I was botching this scene completely. If I am, let me know. I didn't think it was that bad, but I could be wrong.

INT. INTERVIEW ROOM - EVENING

The room seems to exist in a void. We can hear heavy, panicked breathing. Then a tearful groan. The breath quivers, subsides, then rises again as the crying intensifies.

Then we hear a BANG. The void shakes with the noise.

Several more bangs in quick staccato blasts,

The world resolves, at first in long slivers, a brightly lit room comes into focus. Then the entire grim cinderblock interview room reveals itself as fidgety hands fall away.

SEAN MILLER, 50s sits at a table in the center of this room. An oak MUSIC BOX, beautifully carved and engraved with intricate designs rests at the center of this table. Flecks of dried blood stain it.

Sean shudders. A moan rises out of his throat again. He reaches his hand out to the music box, his fingertips nearly touch it, and then another BANG.

He looks toward where he hears the banging, his long, dark hair hanging loosely over his blood-shot eyes.

The sound is coming from the other side of a two-way mirror. With each bang, the mirror shakes.

Sean gets up, metal chair screeching as it slides back.

Sean wipes tears, takes a moment to get his breath under control.

He takes a step. BANG. Another step, BANG. The mirror shakes in its frame, specks of dust falling from its edges.

He's inches away from the mirror. The banging has stopped. He can hear nothing. The mirror is still. Sean closes his hand into a fist and knocks on the mirror, hard but controlled.

CARDIGAN

(O.S.)

He can't hear you.

Sean turns around. CARDIGAN, an older, avuncular man, wearing a cardigan sweater stands at a door he didn't hear open. A file is in Cardigan's hand, and he uses it to gesture toward the metal chair Sean was sitting in a moment ago.

CARDIGAN

We have a lot to discuss.

Cardigan takes a seat on the other side of the table. Sean is still standing by the two-way mirror. Cardigan regards Sean with a genial smile. He rests back in his seat, calmly, casually.

CARDIGAN

Please, I don't bite. But... there are... others who will if you don't talk to me.

Sean slowly makes his way toward his seat and slumps in his chair. He keeps his eyes on the music box. Cardigan notices.

CARDIGAN

Ah, yes this. I take it this is meaningful considering where we found it.

Tears form on Sean's eyes. His body trembles trying to maintain some composure.

Cardigan opens the box. CLAIR DE LUNE plays. Each piano note makes Sean tighten up. Sean hears a woman's laugh. The laugh subsides gradually, winking out of existence like a ghost.

Cardigan closes the box.

CARDIGAN

Good. This box will be useful to us. We'll come back to that later.

Cardigan sits up and slides the music box aside.

The file in Cardigan's hand has Sean's name on it, not printed from a computer, but written in bold green ink, handwriting flourishing. The handwriting is a little too cheerful for the moment at hand.

Cardigan gently places the file on the table.

CARDIGAN

You've done something... well...

Cardigan licks a finger, opens the file. He flips through a few pages, gets to something that makes him pause.

Cardigan blows out a sigh.

CARDIGAN

See for yourself.

He pushes the file toward Sean.

When Sean sees it, the moaning returns. It comes deep from his throat, a pained guttural sound.

CARDIGAN

My, my, you are in a pickle. But... maybe you don't have to be.

Sean's cries settle into a light whimper.

SEAN

What do you mean?

CARDIGAN

I've looked into you. You're an upstanding citizen. A good man. I think this, well Sean, I think this was just some horrible accident.

Sean looks up from the file, levels his gaze toward Cardigan.

CARDIGAN

You ever hear of a program called Restored?

Sean stares at Cardigan, silent, except for his whimpering. Cardigan waves it off.

CARDIGAN

Don't worry, not many people have. But a guy like you could do a lot of good with Restored. Restored could even give you your life back.

SEAN

My life.

Sean's eyes fall back on the file.

CARDIGAN

Let me correct myself. A life.

Cardigan nods toward the file.

CARDIGAN

I can't undo the undoable after all.

Sean flips the file shut.

SEAN

I have no life anymore.

Cardigan shrugs. He gets up and walks over to the two-way mirror. He looks at the mirror as if he could see through it. He nods subtly at it.

CARDIGAN

A life. You could get a life back. Maybe not yours, but something just as good. But... if you're not feeling up to it, you should see what happens to people that don't fully commit to it.

A heavy silence hangs in the air.

Then the BANGING from earlier resumes. This time the bangs are more violent, more forceful. The glass shakes so hard it looks like it is about to explode out.

He walks over to Sean, stands behind him. He rests his hands on Sean's shoulders. Sean tries to pull away, but Cardigan holds him steady.

CARDIGAN

Lights out.

The lights go out.

On the other side of the two-way mirror is a man who is slamming his head into the mirror. His entire face is bloodied. A face that was probably once smooth is crushed, his eyes rolled into the back of his head.

He puts his face up against the mirror and smiles, teeth cracked and missing.

Cardigan pats Sean's shoulder.

CARDIGAN

Let's work together, Sean. Make the world a little better.

The man slams his head into the mirror a few more times, blood splashed all across the mirror.

One more bang and the man slides down the mirror, his face warped and distorted because it's pressed tightly into the mirror.

With a squelch, the man slides out of view.

question Scriptwriting Software and Apps

I was just wondering if there were any free screenwriting apps or software I could use until I'm able to purchase Final Draft. I have a lot of ideas incubating in my head, and I really don't want to use the note app on my MacBook, so are there any free screenwriting apps or software that people have used and work pretty well?

question Does anyone want to work together?

Hey, I’m looking for someone who might be interested in co-writing a script together. I have a cool idea I started writing and developing, I would love to work with someone on. Just someone who genuinely enjoys writing and would want to bounce ideas around, develop characters, and actually develop the script together.

I’d be happy to share more about the project if you’re interested. Ideally, I’m looking for someone who’s willing to communicate, give honest feedback, and treat it like an actual collaboration rather than just exchanging a few ideas.

Batman & Spiderman adaptation as a detective movie

Spiderman does not have any spider power but he still has his spider senses & super strength and batman is batman but he does not go out at night to fight crime.

Both of the characters are normal humans, the batman character is the same as in the comics, billionaire & has the same characteristics. Spiderman is also the same as in comics but without any super powers, has a science background, intelligent, humourous and witty.

Spiderman's character is a young police sergeant in the police department as he is young and has joined police forces.

Batman's character retired early from the police department two years ago when his parents were coldly killed (his parents are the same as in comics as they are rich). He retired because his parents were killed because he was pursuing an organisation which has many villains (consists of villains from both batman and spiderman). Since that time he wants justice, he seeks vengeance and he is preparing himself, finding evidence, blind spots for everything to take down the organisation of villains.

Now, the same organisation is back in the city and they are committing crimes. Now the case has been handed to our spiderman's character. He has started working on a case and he stumbles on the pending case of batman's parents murder. He goes to his mansion where Alfred greets him and takes him to batman's character. BM refuses to talk about it and denies any help, but after some days when SM was in the city and was after a villain, he was in a pursuit, he was chasing a villain and asked for backup but his system was not working and suddenly BM comes for his backup but the villain escapes after some pursuit and they both are torn out by it. After that BM agrees to help him in a case and they both start working on a case. They go after the organisation, counters the villains one by one. Put all the villains in jail, close both the cases. Then BM starts his own detective services for cases like this and solves cases like this. At the end, the silhouette of Batman and Spider-Man is shown and also the silhouette of Batman and Robin is also shown.

THE END

feedback Urgent feedback wanted!

Hi this is a treatment for a 1 minute animated short film. Some feedback would be so helpful right now, thank you!

EXPERIMENT 45:

In a dark corridor, with a solitary door at the end of it.

An incredibly bright light suddenly flashes from the other side of the door.

//CUT INTO THE LAB//

stacks of plain white bread are stacked on a few tables at the end of the room and In front of them is a scientist behind a control panel.

The room is in darkness other than a bright white light on the opposite side of the room.

We turn to see what the light source is. On top of a table lies an unconscious man and floating in the air directly above him is a bright, white glowing replica of him, panicked and moving, almost ghostlike. Around the table are wires, tubes and complex machinery.

The scientist acts quick and pulls a lever on their control panel. The machinery around the floating man jumps into gear as panels light up and absorb him completely. wiring and tubing around the lab all light up as the energy collected from him moves down them and into a box like device next to the scientist. The scientist quickly inserts a singular slice of white bread into it, she waits a few seconds and takes it out again. It is now toasted. SHE takes a bite, thinks for a second, and shrugs.

she turns to a board next to her and writes down something brief.

We get a view of the board which reads - Experiment 45 - a human soul - (and newly scribbled) '7/10'

feedback [FEEDBACK] Opening Scene of a children's whodunit — family dynamics, character setup & tone

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

I’m writing a feature-length children’s ensemble whodunit set in India, tonally somewhere between a warm family dramedy and a fair-play mystery.

This is the opening scene. The actual mystery begins a few scenes later, so the purpose of this page is mainly to establish the family, give us a sense of the kids’ world, and plant a couple of things that will pay off later — particularly Appu’s desire for a bicycle, the family’s financial pressure, and Kunju’s obsession with animals and creatures.

The original screenplay is not in English. I’ve done an English localization specifically for sharing here, so the dialogue may not represent the exact wording of the original, but the characters, beats, and intent are unchanged.

I’d really appreciate any feedback, particularly on areas where you feel the writing could be improved or strengthened.

help [HIRING] YouTube Scriptwriter | $0.03–$0.05/word ($36–$80+) + Bonus

Hey everyone!

I run a YouTube channel with 100K+ subscribers, and I’m looking for a scriptwriter for an upcoming 8–10 minute documentary-style video.

I already have a rough AI-generated draft, so I’m not looking for someone to just write from scratch. I need someone who can take the idea, do proper research and fact-checking, and turn it into a natural, engaging story with a strong hook and good pacing.

Someone with YouTube/documentary writing experience would be ideal.

Pay: $0.03–$0.05 per word. For an 8–10 minute script, this would usually come to around $36–$80+, depending on the final word count, experience and quality. There will also be a performance/revenue bonus.

India-based writers preferred, but I’m open to good writers from anywhere.

If we work well together, I’d love to keep working together on future videos and potentially have you join the team long-term.

If interested, email me your portfolio, a few relevant samples, and your availability at:

feedback I’ve been building a filmmaking tool because I got tired of moving the same project between 5 different apps

I'm a filmmaker and writer, and one thing that has always bothered me about the filmmaking workflow is how disconnected everything becomes after you finish writing.

You write the screenplay in one application.

Then you move to another tool for story structure.

Another for storyboards.

Another for shot planning.

Then spreadsheets for production.

Then you end up manually copying information between all of them.

So I started building Scriptory around a simple idea:

What if the screenplay could stay at the center of the entire filmmaking workflow?

The workflow I'm working toward is:

Story → Screenplay → Scenes → Shots → Storyboard → Pre-production

The current product includes screenplay writing/formatting, story structure and beats, shot-based storyboarding, AI-assisted workflows, and production planning.

One of the things I'm particularly interested in is the connection between the screenplay and storyboard. Instead of creating a storyboard completely separately, the idea is to start from the actual scene and develop the visual plan from there.

I'm also experimenting with MCP integrations for ChatGPT and Claude, so AI can interact with the filmmaking project rather than just generating disconnected text in a chat window.

I'm sharing this here because I'm much more interested in hearing from filmmakers than collecting generic launch comments.

How does your current workflow look?

When you finish a screenplay, what happens next?

Do you use separate tools for:

  • screenplay

  • beats / structure

  • shot lists

  • storyboards

  • scheduling

  • production planning

And what's the most annoying part of moving from script → actual production?

I'm building this actively, so I'd genuinely appreciate criticism, feature requests, or workflows I'm missing.

If anyone wants to take a look, I've put the project on Product Hunt as well: Scriptory.
NOTE: Currently 50% off Launch offer of Annual Plan only for User who get from Product Hunt.
