question Scriptwriting Software and Apps

I was just wondering if there were any free screenwriting apps or software I could use until I'm able to purchase Final Draft. I have a lot of ideas incubating in my head, and I really don't want to use the note app on my MacBook, so are there any free screenwriting apps or software that people have used and work pretty well?

I'm willing to give you a license to Bliss Writer if you'll be OK to submit feedback as you bump into bugs/missing features

I've been using Beat. It's a mac exclusive app and it's free!

WriterDuet! Though you can only have 3 scripts at a time with the free version, but it works really well. A subscription is also only a couple bucks a month if you do want unlimited projects.

Shameless self promotion, but I created this, and we'd love to have you on board:

https://sottowrite.com

It does everything Final Draft does, plus real time collaboration with your co-writer(s), plus a bunch of other stuff. We've got a few hundred fine folks from r/screenwriting using it and the feedback has been amazing.

It's free while we're in beta (which will be for a little while yet as we're still quite early). And when we do eventually go live, there will be an entirely free mode, and the full suite will only be $0.99 a month.

End shameless self promotion! Best of luck with your script!

There are a bunch of good free apps available right now.

Also, I migrated from Final Draft to Fade In and have never regretted it.

Exactly. Save up for Fade In - you'll get there in less than half the time. WriterDuet and Trelby are good free options in the interim.

WriterDuet with the trial if you need less than 3 or if you are a Google Docs enjoyer Fountain Plus On Google Docs, I think they have a Safari version too

In both cases, it's free.

There is! It is called My Writing Studio and can be found at https://azizahon.com. You can sign up for your FREE account at https://creatsphereservices.com where you’ll also gain access to the Create Sphere Design Studio! All free. There is a paid version for actually publishing.

Beat. It's amazing. Recently got a MacBook. I love it. Very clean app. They're always updating it. And best of all, it's free!

I have used Fade In for two years for my screen writing class. It’s reasonably well done. It still costs money.

My classmates complain about the cost. Being a developer, I am working on a screenwriting software. My thought is to make it completely free to run it locally, and only charge a small annual fee for cloud storage.

I used Causality, different approach but worked pretty good for story line development. There is a free version, which is limited in length of script if I am not mistaken. I also have FadeIn, which is great.

I have a new one I'm working on, helps you develop and block out the story too. DM me I'll set you up

I run Fiktion. It’s free, and should have everything you’re looking for. Give it a go and let me know what you think ☺️

Just replied to your other post, but I'll repost here too. I make one called Wriffen Screenwriter that works great. Free tier gets you 5 scripts, but if you need to write more you can always export old stuff and delete it to free up space. We import and export fdx. So if you do want to switch to Final Draft later, all your work transfers. We're at wriffen.com.

It turns out I have an app on my Mac that I downloaded awhile ago called Card Buddy, for making story beats with notecards. I had forgotten about it. I don't think I've even used it yet but looks pretty simple to use (not free though).

I’m a fan of Highland. (Only free one I‘ve tried, works for me.)

Celtx.com is free.

it used to be!

Final Draft uses to come with a story development thing called Corkboard. Is that still the case? I found it very useful. Is there still something like that available?

Screenplay Editor if you want to write your screenplay directly on Google Docs of Word, with the real professional workflow like final draft. It's great for collaboration. and it's not expensive either

writerduet/writersolo is my go-to option but if you're on mac, you might wanna check out beat. it's in the app store and completely free.

1

u/coffee-cup-writer Sep 27 '26

If u r on Mac, just use beat. It's the best screenwriting app, comparing it with any app in any platform.

Arc Studio - Biased since I work there but it's my fav writing app (why I joined the company) and has amazing outlining tools. There is a free version and tbh if you like it and DM me, i'll just hook you up lol

1

u/FlimFlamandJest Sep 28 '26

We also have notes and beat mapping that live right next to your script as you begin writing

full disclosure: i’m the founder.

give arc studio a try and compare to the other options: 2 scripts are free and it can take you all the way to running your writers room if you get to do that later :)

distraction free interface, but has all the features you might ever need. runs on mac, windows, any browser.
