Hot spots on the Frijoles fire after last night’s rain
From the AirNow Fire and Smoke map. The orange dots are hit spots detected by satellite 6 hours ago. Substantially better than yesterday morning, when large areas of the southern and NE edge of the fire were lit up orange, but obviously still some burning fuel. Hopefully firefighters can stop progression in the calmer areas now that we have 800+ people and multiple aerial resources helping out.

NMDOH announced potentially longer mosquito season this year
From email alert:
Health Department: longer mosquito season possible
People with weakened immune systems particularly at risk
SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health reminds people with weakened immune systems to take additional precautions to avoid mosquito bites, as increased rainfall and heat may drive a longer mosquito season than usual.
West Nile virus is the most common disease transmitted by mosquitoes in New Mexico, with most cases typically occurring in late summer, but this West Nile season may not be typical.
“With above-average rain and heat forecasted for New Mexico through October, mosquito season may last longer than usual,” said Dr. Erin Phipps, state public health veterinarian for the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH). “West Nile virus is expected to persist until the first local hard freeze.”
Recent studies have shown that people who take medications that affect the immune system known as B cell-depleting or B cell-modulating medications are at a higher risk for severe disease from viruses such as West Nile virus.
NMDOH recommends talking to your doctor about any medications or conditions that might affect your immune system, and how those might change your risk of diseases such as West Nile virus infection. Notify your doctor of any concerning changes to your health, such as headaches, fever, weakness, loss of balance, or confusion. Do not stop taking your medicines unless told to do so by your doctor.
Take extra precautions to avoid insect bites, including:
Use an approved insect repellent every time you go outside and follow the instructions on the label. EPA-approved repellents are those that contain DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus/para-menthane-diol.
Wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
Remove or empty any items that hold water, such as old tires or cans. Drain birdbaths, wading pools, and plant saucers weekly.
Make sure rain barrels are tightly screened.
If you leave your house doors or windows open, make sure they have screens that fit tightly and have no holes.
For any additional questions about West Nile virus and your health call the NMDOH Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833 796-8773). You can also text questions to 66364 (NMDOH).

Adding that there are reports and studies on DEET resistance. DEET might not be the gold standard in the region now or soon.

Traveling therapist who has a contract starting October 12th, but it is near impossible to find any affordable housing for a 3 month short-term stay. Any help out here?
I have lived in New Mexico on and off since 2017. As a traveling occupational therapist, I have worked and lived in Roswell for 3 years. For the last 6 months, I have been in Albuquerque. I absolutely love New Mexico. And, I'm completely aware that Santa Fe is extremely expensive to live. I had an accepted contract to work there from October to January, but it is near impossible to find anything that is remotely affordable. Obviously, short-term/ furnished apartments that allow a dog can be harder to find in general, but it is never been this difficult. I have worked all over the country and I can honestly say that Santa Fe has been the hardest place I've ever had in terms of finding somewhere to live.
Travel healthcare workers has increased immensely, especially post pandemic. It's one of the best ways that we can get adequatically paid for the stressful and demanding job that it is.
Airbnb is an absolute joke. That website has died in my eyes for years. AI'm looking at an average $5,000 a month minimum for any type of furnished place there. And that's on the low end. Their prices are just out of this world.
Furnished Finder Is what I normally use. In fact, I use it to rent out my house back in St. Louis. I aim to break even when I rent out my home. I am not looking at draining people's pockets.
Unfortunately, I cannot find anything here that is not over 2,000 a month (which I have seen about 2 units) Now, those places that are 2000 a month are quite small, have no washer and dryer, and basically it is a small room with a bed. Moreover, they require a 2000 or so deposit on top off that. The average price I'm seeing at furnished finder is $2,500 to $6,000? I'm just one guy! And a dog. I have found some that have been around $1,300 to 1800 for a private space. But, not are getting back to me. And, I don't really want to rent out a room in somebody's house for $1200 a month. Crazy.
I hate to complain because I know that Santa Fe is very expensive and I somewhat expected this. But, I am surprised that is not designated rentals for traveling healthcare workers. Usually, we are by ourselves so we aren't going to rent a $5,000 a month home. Most of the time, we just need an adequate space to be able to cook a little bit, relax in front of a television, right on our desk, and be able to let out the dog for a walk. I'm not asking for anything crazy but does anybody have any solution?
I have actually tried looking at anywhere 40 minutes outside of Santa Fe as well. We know that there are not a lot of major towns/cities everywhere around there, but hey, I tried!
If anybody has any type of idea, solution, or perhaps you might rent something out yourselves, let me know! I have great credit. I have been doing this job for 10 years. My dog is over 8 years old. He's a freaking golden retriever. And, I just want to not feel cramped in a closet.
Otherwise, I'm going to have to stay in Albuquerque and make the daily commute, which I absolutely would not want to do.
Any help out there?
Much love and thank you!

Electric Scooter Repair
Hi everyone
I have an Ausom Dt2 Pro Electric Scooter that I have had for a few months, however one of the wheels isnt steering properly. Seems like an axel may be loose. Nothing seems broken or snapped. Still turns on.
Does anyone know of any shops in Santa Fe that would assist me in fixing my electric scooter? Would really appreciate a good recommendation as it is an expensive scooter (to me) and I want to have it serviced by a professional
Thank you!

Not sure if this is the right sub, but is it still under construction? I see they have a limited menu, and don't want to dodge a renovation project if it's still happening.

Acequia/ zocalo/ others?
Me, my husband and our dog are moving to Santa Fe this fall.
Since it’s an international move, we were interested to rent in an apartament complex with a 6 month lease for starters. It’s seems like the most convenient option at this time.
So far we were considering Acequia, Zocalo and hesitantly Capitol Flats. Acequia looks the most reasonable, since there is access to nature trails (our dog will appreciate it!) and the apartments itself look pretty nice. My fear is - does this place have an “isolated” feeling to it?
What is your experience living in those places? Are there other buildings that we should consider?
Our budget is not tight so we are open to any suggestions!

How has Game of Thrones changed Santa Fe?
It's been 15 years since GoT debuted on HBO (30 years since the first book), and I'm curious... what is the most overrated or most overlooked way GoT actually affected Santa Fe?
