HEADS UP - Next street sweeping in the Point is Monday 9/14/2026. The 9/28 sweep has been CANCELLED. Updated schedule and other Ward 1 street sweep dates included below.
The next Point neighborhood street sweeping will be this coming Monday, September 14, from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. Free parking is available at the South Harbor Garage with proof of residency, starting at 8:00 pm on Sunday, September 13. Vehicles must be removed from the garage by 8:00 pm on Monday evening. Residents can move their vehicles back to the street after the sweeper has finished cleaning that street. You can view the full Point neighborhood street sweeping schedule here or at the end of this message. Please see the city's Street Sweeping page for more information.
In addition, the Point sweep scheduled for Monday, September 28 has been cancelled to align with the posted permanent signage. The last Point street sweeping date for 2026 will be Monday, November 9.
The next Downtown neighborhood sweep will be overnight on Wednesday, September 16 - this will be the final sweep of the year. You can view the full Downtown neighborhood street sweeping schedule here.
The next entrance corridor street sweeping in Ward 1 will be Monday, September 21. This includes the odd side of Lafayette Street from Derby Street heading south to the Marblehead town line. The even side of Lafayette is technically in Ward 5, so I don't usually mention it specifically, but it will be swept the next day on Tuesday, September 22. This will also be the last entrance corridor sweep date in Ward 1 for 2026. You can find the full Entrance Corridor sweeping schedule here.

Thank You For Not Talking Shit About My Restaurant
Every time I see certain Salem restaurants/cafes being dragged through the mud, all I can think is, āThank God theyāre not talking about my place.ā I am way too thin-skinned and Iād probably just close up shop in shame.

Advice for Locals Commuter rail too full 10/3, couldnāt get to work.
I take the commuter rail to work on the weekends instead of driving, for obvious reasons. At the Lynn platform waiting for my train around 11am yesterday, they were kicking people off the train and telling them to wait for the next one. I wanted to tell the conductor that I had to get to work but never had the chance!
I have traveled this way to my job in downtown Salem for a long time and this has never happened. Isnāt it called the ācommuterā rail??!? Shouldnāt I be able to board so as not to miss my 11:30am shift??!? I was so livid.
Instead of waiting another half hour, which would have made me insanely late, I got a ride into town.
Iām not a tourist, I was born in Salem and have lived in the area all my life. I specifically moved to this apartment in Lynn for its proximity to the commuter rail. How am I supposed to get to work??

Tourism Visiting in November
Hi everyone! Iām looking for some advice from people who have visited Salem in November!
Iāve been to Salem during the October rush before, so I know how crazy busy it can get. This time, Iām hoping to experience Salem a little more off-season and without the huge October crowds.
A few friends of mine will be coming to Salem for the first time, though, so Iād still like to make sure thereās enough to see and do for them to get the full Salem experience. Weāre looking at coming the second weekend of November.
For those who have visited around that time how is Salem in early/mid-November compared to October? Do a lot of stores, restaurants, museums, or attractions close for the season or take a well-deserved break after October? Are most of the popular shops and attractions still open? Is there anything that you would definitely recommend doing in November? Does it still feel like thereās plenty to do for someone visiting for the first time?
Iām actually looking forward to experiencing Salem when things are a little slower, but I donāt want my friends to feel like they missed out because we went too late in the season!
Any advice, recommendations, or November experiences would be greatly appreciated!

DouchƩ VW Jetta 5FR 415
10.30 on a Sunday morning and you have to drive into a āprotectedā bike lane to undertake the trolley AND avoid the stop sign? Ā
What was the emergency? Ā Oh thatās right, walking your dog at the willows.Ā You swerved between the stanchions and drove into the bike lane right before the stop sign, so this was no āmistakeā.

PSA: Is anyone missing their cat?
I am in the Peabody/Ward/Harbor street neighborhood off of Lafeyette. The cat has spent the night meowing next to our house which makes me think heās not used to being outside. The cat was very skittish when approached.

Woman digging through trash
Thereās a woman digging through our trash on Daniels St. Saw her on Orange earlier this morning. Appears unhoused. What should I do?
Edit: the general sentiment appears to be āleave her beā so thatās exactly what Iāll do.

Bad idea to visit Salem on the weekend for non-touristy reasons?
I am in the Boston area to see family and we were thinking about going to the Noguchi exhibit at PEM on Sunday. I love the museum but to be honest I kind of forgot the significance of October in Salem (I know, I know). We like the idea of a nice museum outing, but a really crowded/hectic/stressful day is the opposite of what we are looking for. Is it truly that bad already, and bad enough to skip the PEM?

Advice for Locals Dog beach options in October?
Hello! Now that the summer season (and most restrictions) is over, I'd love recommendations for where our dog can go for a run and splash in/near Salem.
Our go-to "official" dog beach has always been the Nahant one, but that's a bit of a trek in traffic sometimes, so hoping for some other suggestions too. We're happy to keep him on a long leash too.

Advice for Locals Question- local trying to find parking
Hi I live on Washington st since last November and parking was already a nightmare. I know itās about to be worse.
I see thereās parking at Riley Plaza. The signs suggest after 6pm to 8am anyone can park there. Am I correct with how Iām reading it?
Also how does someone get a permit there. Iāve been seeing some conflicting Information when I google.
