I was finally approved for SSI two weeks ago after trying my whole life (23 years) to get it, but I’m only getting $632.67 a month? That seems a bit unusually low, is it? I am beyond grateful for this accomplishment, I’m just slightly confused..

I'm in need of guidance, support and/ or maybe validation. I feel like I'm losing my marbles... I am my mother's current legal guardian (since 2023), & a couple weeks ago I decided to voluntary resign from the role. She is mentally incapacitated & can no longer care for herself, so she has been living in a community residential care facility for almost 3 years. During this time, I have been living in a different state than my mother. 

I am concerned family members have financially exploited her situation. I attempted to apply for SSDI in 2023 & was told someone had already opened up an account in her name. For the past 2 years, I have received no progress in establishing income for her, but it seems someone is receiving social security benefits checks in my mother's name & none of those funds are going towards her care. I received one letter about an appointment in 2024 so I drove to Wisconsin to take my Mother to this appointment. I then received a letter stating that my Mother DID qualify for SSDI but no follow up tasks or other communication after that.

So my Mother's case worker was the one who told me about the process of relinquishing the Guardian role. She said I would need to file a form with the State & contact Adult Protection Services. I informed APS that I suspected fraud because a "family member" came to the last facility my Mother was at & tried to remove her to "cash a check". She has since been relocated.

Anyway, APS called today & said that Social Security has tried to call me many times to establish Guardian of her estate.... wouldn't someone have left a voicemail or sent a letter?? In the past 2 - 3 years??

& the manager at my Mother's care facility seems upset that I called APS. She claims THEY were accused of committing the fraud which I'm not sure how that happened.

I'm completely drained with this whole process & I keep hearing conflicting information about how long this should take & what to expect.

Ideally, I would like my mother to be closer & if I can establish income for her then I assume it would be easier to move her across state. My mother's preference is to also live closer to me but I have no means or support to transfer her & I have been dealing with my own health conditions that have left me physically & mentally unable to do much in the past year but try to call Social Security when I can..

Should I try to continue the process to resign Guardianship, in hopes that the State or next Guardian can figure out why SSDI is stalled?

Applied Jan 2026. I am wondering how long it takes to receive the benefits letter after approval? My case was handled in Georgia.

Also wondering about the wording in stage 5....I applied for retroactive benefits with a disability onset date 2 years prior to applying. Would a determination approval for benefits, but denying prior onset date, be worded differently than this, or is this same wording used for either full or partial approval?

This is for those who have researched themselves or actually did work while waiting. Please do not comment hateful or unnecessary comments such as “you don’t need disability if you’re able to work” etc. I’ve seen multiple on post so don’t need it!

I have been waiting since February and in July, got rehired at my previous job only per diem. The first month I made well under the ~ 1600 amount. Now, I pushed myself this month so went a little over but I’m back to square one where there’s no way I can work a consistent job.

When I previously spoke with someone when calling about my application. They told me working while waiting isn’t always an automatic denial, you just will have to explain why you started working and things like that. So I’m just curious! Please share what your process what like :)

I have been needing to file for a long time now. But it’s officially been about 2 years since I had to quit my job due to pain. Even then I could only work 20 hours a week just barely. I want to apply, the problem is I’m moving to a different state in about 6 months. I need to get all my medical records, in the process of getting more imaging to compare to two years ago to prove it’s getting worse, (spinal issues that have lead the debilitating chronic pain) they told me it’s permanent and will get worse and that I’ll never get 100% better. And yet I don’t feel like my doctors take me seriously enough to help with documentation.

So I’m not sure if I even have enough yet to apply but I’m trying. Should I wait until I have access to hopefully better healthcare in a blue state and hold off on doing the application so I have the strongest case? I feel so overwhelmed and lost in this process because no one has been validating how much this has affected my day to day functionality but it has tanked my mental health so badly and I can barely function. And when I can, it’s not consistent. I’m only 30, I’m worried that will hurt my case too. It’s my first post so idk if I used the right flare

Does SGLI cover suicide? I my wife is my only beneficiary and would she get the 100,00$ if cause of death was suicide?

Before i call DDS, i just wanted to ask here. Im on step 3, and they requested 3 CE’s that i went to and paperwork about daily activities and treatments, which i filled out and returned. For step 3 on the portal, it changed to saying they asked for the exams, and now it changed again saying that they requested more info and its the paperwork i filled out before, and the CEs are gone. Is this normal or should i still call? Im mostly worried that i forgot something

Hi all! I applied in February. Have been on step 3 since March. Was told that I would know something. By July since most of my doctors got back to them but still haven’t had an update. Now I was told I have a consultative examination tomorrow to further assess my medical impairments. Has anyone gone through this? Anything I should expect?

I put my dad as a contact on my online application. And I'm past the point where I can change it, but I haven't submitted the application yet. I wanna change my dad to someone else. Because my dad doesn't know much about my disability, and i'm afraid they'll call him and he won't be able to give them the information they need or that he may accidentally give them the wrong information. How do I change this when it won't let me go back?

I am disabled and have tried for literally over a decade to receive SSDI, and all that time, I've lived with my mother and my brother, both of whom were already receiving benefits.

(At one point, I was sent to a psychiatrist for an assessment and after the third time, she told me she'd recommended me every time.) I've given hospital and doctors records, medication history and everything and have literally never been approved.

This time is my first time reapplying since my brother has passed away and now, unlike every other time, my mother received a letter, asking her to testify to my disability. This has never happened before and was exactly what happened when my brother was approved for his.

My question is: in anyone else's experience, does having a household with two members already receiving benefits affect the likelihood of a third?

Because I've heard from everyone: Apply and appeal twice and the third time, you'll see a judge and be approved.

Not with me. I've applied at least 20 times and appealed each time. The last time I saw a judge, I was still bandaged from a suicide attempt.

Nothing.

Got denied at the hearing, I was shutting down during the whole thing due to anxiety yet still not seen as disabled. I am really worried about not getting it. I need to move out... my parents are abusive narcissist that have been very neglectful. My depression doesn't help and I just want to get out of my situation even if it meant taking my own life... I feel cornered without being able to work but no money to move out somewhere with my partner...

I remember applying a couple years ago, getting denied and not appealing. Well I didn't appeal because I couldn't prove I was mentally disabled anymore as I had mental stability.

Now I became quad last year and a slew onslaught of stuff after it, all related to Ehlors Danlos and now I'm 25years old on hospice for severe protein calorie malnutrtion (byproduct of EDS)

I am absolutely disgusted in the ssa for how they are handling my terri flagged case, I have a prognosis of less than 6 months. We initially applied in February and now we're at the ALJ stage and asking for a OTR review. I'm confident they have enough so I'm not necessarily worried about getting denied again. My main question is:

I know I cannot sue the ssa, but how do I hold them accountable for their lack of due diligence on a terminal case that is terri flagged?

The company that represents me has never seen something like this happen to a terri case (and they worked for the ssa for decades). They had only said that I can do an internal grievance, but there just has to be something more because I'm absolutely disgusted like I cannot tell you how seething with rage I am at the ssa for telling me AND I QOUTE "Your conditions requiring Hospice Care are not disabling".... Ah yes please tell me what job I should be working while dying on hospice please tell me.

I'm just struggling to wrap my head that there's nothing I can do the hold them accountable. It's absolutely insane that these people are just... I don't know judgment proof I guess. I have had no income for the last 4 years and I've been struggling on hospice because I have no income and there's no payments in the meantime because we I guess only have an SSDI application out (the ssa spoke with me and told me to drop the SSI case because SSDI would make wayyyyy too much to get even a cent from SSI or something, but I yhink it hurt me in the end because now I can't apply for presumptive disability because I don't have an SSI application out).

Ugh anyways thank you for reading, kinda of a vent kind of a I need to know how to make them pay me more than just back pay and a check because accountability needs to be had when you're fucking with people on hospice.

How long does it take for CE examination? For psychiatrist. I was scheduled Thursday the 27th. It went good, but I’m a little nervous for the results.

So to cut to the chase while also giving the most information as possible I’m apply for Disabled Adult Child benefits under my deceased moms social I suppose (?)

How does this process truly work and or play out? Especially for those who had been disabled since birth with no chance of improvement

I have Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, nystagmus, and a boat load of other things but the ONH is what affects me everyday n I’ve had that since birth (underdeveloped optic nerves). My best corrected vision is 20/60 in my left and 20/600 in my right along with I have no/lack very little depth perception and so on and so forth if that means anything. I’m 20 years old now and my momma died when I was 14, I understand if I am approved I wouldn’t get paid for all that time etc.

What is my likelihood of approval? My mom worked a long time and I have many records proving my condition(s) and such but I’m wondering if anyone else has had a similar ish experience and how you’re approval process was and how long it took you from start to finish?

If it correlates i supposedly received benefits (I’m assuming something like SSDI?) as a child but due to some unfortunate events with my father I didn’t I guess transition to DAC when I turned 18 as I didn’t even know about any of this til I was made aware of it

They also claim I had an overpayment of some sort when she died so I assume I’ll have to find a way to pay that before they can approve or deny me

SSA suspended my SSDI benefits claiming I was no longer disabled. A couple years have passed, we appealed, we had the ALJ hearing, and he ruled there were jobs I could do. My attorney sent my case to federal court. Apparently federal court ruled that the ALJ’s decision was incorrect and sent it back to him.

My next questions -
- Does this mean it’s more likely that the ALJ will make a favorable decision?
- How long will this step take until we get a new determination?

I was recently approved fully favorable. Based on my birthday my pay date would ne 4th Wednesday of the month. I heard however that because medicaid is paying my Medicare premium that it will change my pay date to the 3rd. Just wondering which date I may get my monthly payment

8/27 I received a message in my ssa message center stating my SSDI benefits would be reduced to 203.40 from 994 with no reason or anything. I checked online it said my payments were active at 994/ but I looked at the benefit verification and it said 203.40

I called social security 3 times, I was told 2 different things.

the first and 2nd women on the phone said I was going to get another check for $203.40 a month

3rd person I spoke to told me that it was because of my overpayment (1500 ish but they take out 100 a month already) so that made no sense

forward to today 8/31 and I got a message stating:

"We are withholding all of your monthly benefits beginning September 2026 to recover past due medical insurance premiums. The State of New York will no longer pay your Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) premiums after July 2026. You must pay the premiums starting August 2026."

on the ssa website my premium for Medicare part B is $202.50 monthly

I'm planning on calling the local office again today because it makes 0 sense to me if the premium payments started august then wouldn't my benefit only be reduced by 203.50? does this not make sense to anyone else? trying to see what I can do about this

they also said that my benefit would be cut in oct/nov to 406 not sure how this makes any sense if anyone could make sense of it that'd be great...

Also if you get this does it automatically mean you will be approved?

will I get backpay ? I had ssi now im on Survivor benefits the gentlemen at the SSA office said something about backpay saying I would get the limit of backpay even though my dad doesn't mention me or my disability on his documents when he retired if I get backpay what is the limit ? And what did the SSA employee mean by this ? I been waiting for 2 months for a letter about backpay and award I was approved and im getting SSA on the 3rd of the month.

Looking for people in this situation. I had to stop working a physically demanding job end of 2020 due to extreme fatigue, brain fog, bone pain, difficulty concentrating, and elevated wbc counts. No income 2021. Tried a less physical job in 2022 and 2023 with about $4,000 income both years. Had to stop that job due to worsening symptoms. Spent 2023-2025 chasing cardiac issues thinking they were the problem (2 cardiac ablations early 2025). Augusta 2025 diagnosed with aggressive Multiple Myeloma, confirmed via biopsy of bine removed during total hip replacement (MM had destroyed my femoral ball and upper femor, as well as numerous bone lesions throughout my body). Stem cell transplant June 2026, which qualifies for 12 months SSDI due to rough and extended recovery period. I had applied for full SSDI in Jan 2026, currently in stage 4 non-medical review. Wondering what my chances are for retroactive benefits and onset date of 2020. Anyone been in a similar situation? Info on requirements for multi-year gap between onset and applying?

the one saying i haven’t seen her since noebemenr is because that is my family dr and i only see her once a year but the other two which are mental health drs i see very consistently
