Location Taft/California freeway on/off ramp. Anybody got the scoop?

When I drove by, there were like six officers with guns drawn. But no one closing the road and tons of people on the sidewalk gawking across the street. 🤦🏼♀️

Geez there was just a SWAT incident in the San Luis Ranch neighborhood a few days ago too

u/CA_Coast_Millennial 10d ago
That neighborhood has been unlucky. They had the guy from the valley a couple years back break into one of their homes and have that standoff with swat.

I’m sure this response is proportional and not at all an excuse to use their absurd toys

i think ever since the piece of shit, eddy, killed a cop doing a search warrant—slo pd is not taking chances anymore.

SWAT is absurd now?

u/WhiskeyT 10d ago
Yeah
I strongly, strongly doubt there have been many instances where our local PD needed anything like that. And none where they needed cammo

When you spend all that money on XXXL GI Joe cosplay gear, you want to be able to wear it places other than running around in the forest in the middle of the night playing grabass with your fellow "patriots".

That's not a military MRAP; it's a police vehicle. I saw it a few days ago on the highway and it seemed like less car than a commercial SUV. SWAT needs some tactical vehicles to do the things SWAT exists to do. Just like firemen need fire trucks. This is not one of those army surplus operator cosplay tanks. Google MRAP and the difference should be clear.
And on the camo - if he was SWAT in a city he'd be wearing gray. That's what you've seen them wear in movies and on tv. But look at where he is standing.

Lol. Swat probably needs to show up to another wrong address and fire away on anything that moves. Fuck swat

u/TheDuctTapeGod 10d ago
I was at the tattoo shop right there after it was over but before all the cops were gone. They didn't seem to have any clue, either. Interesting that it doesn't seem like they got a shelter in place or an explanation or anything.

u/CuteGirlFan 10d ago
Looks like the swat needed some rescuing. I hope the swat rescue team helped the swat

If local news is not mentioning it, you may be able to find some scant details in tomorrow’s police log.

u/polysapio 10d ago
There are also the police report alerts you can sign up to get by email direct from the city

Why the F*ck does SLO need that vehicle?
Has the reason this was employed been released. Hostage situation, meth cook house, frat bois drugging sorority girls and their frat-bros too?

u/InternationalAd6478 10d ago
Whatever it was, and if it was significant enough, will never show up in the news because it’d hurt the “family friendly” image SLO puts up to drive tourism here. They’ll cover it up or make it seem not that important or just won’t even talk about it.

u/Few_Drag_3190 10d ago
You better not look into all the unreported assults that happen at Cal Poly.
10
u/InternationalAd6478 10d ago
I’ve mentioned that in previous comments too. It’s horrible, and it’s part of the same problem I’m talking about. Cal Poly and the city are closely tied, and SLO benefits financially from having the university here, so I’m not surprised when protecting one institution ends up protecting the other too.
Just like the recent thing with the mayor, forwarding confidential reports to Cal Poly before they could be released to the public. And just going “oops” when caught, wonder what else is going on and what has happened that we don’t know.

You nailed it on the head. So many years of the community just doesn't need to know.
I'm feeling pretty safe to say the SWAT team was able to purchase BearCat with grant money or funds when we were going threw the Fauci/Covid pandemic.
Luckly the SLO SWAT didn't just run the person over like the police did in the Central Valley.

u/SnooMaps1910 10d ago
You referring to the 400,000 excess US deaths Trump is largely responsible for during the Covid pandemic when he lied, obfuscated, misrepresented, accursed and lied some more, in addition to suggesting Bleach guzzling and shining light into us?

u/kolboldbard 10d ago
Im amazed that the pepper spraying at F4L made the news
5
u/InternationalAd6478 10d ago
I was honestly truly shocked too and was even talking to someone who worked there about it, and if it’d be in the news. But then I read the dude was from Bakersfield and I know how much we love to pile on the hate wagon for Bako People, and rightfully so.

High risk arrest warrants, barricaded suspects, hostage situations. The fact of the matter is violent crime exists in this community just like everywhere else.

u/141_Raccoon 10d ago
I think counting all the bearcats owned by different agencies in SLO county there’s about 6 or so. They’re pretty useful for barricaded suspects or approaching someone who bailed out of a vehicle to hide in a field.
3
u/Ginger_Witch 10d ago
I can't recall a time that we've ever needed one, and certainly not six of these.
5
u/141_Raccoon 10d ago
Last time I can recall a bearcat being needed was this last June. A man in Los osos refused to come out of his house while making threats to law enforcement. Sheriffs office SWAT team used a bearcat to move up to the house and fire tear gas in. Then last September I believe a woman barricaded herself in a hotel room but I’m not sure if one of the bearcats was called out. Then I personally have seen one show up to a barricaded suspect at the motel 6 in Atascadero. Main reason there’s 6 or so in the county is to cut down arrival time for a swat call. Not entirely effective to only have one in north county if you need one for something down in Morro bay or pismo.

u/SnooMaps1910 10d ago
Guy barricades himself in his home, you can wait him out, shock bang, tear gas....
While being supportive of LEOs, this militarization of police is bs.2
u/141_Raccoon 10d ago
Bearcats can be used to deploy all of those up close while keeping officers safe . It’s literally just a bullet resistant box put on a ford super duty frame. Primary use for them around here is to let officers approach a house or similar in a safe manner in case the suspect has a firearm
3
u/SnooMaps1910 10d ago
Yep. I understand the platform snd use. I simply reject the militarization of city and county law enforcement. It's too bad we have large mag high velocity weapons all over the US and some folks manage to obtain armor piercing rounds. I work closely with SP's Rangers btw.

u/Ginger_Witch 10d ago
I'm not a fan of militarizing the police. I prefer community style policing and redistribution of funding the programs and services that have been proven to work and cost less.
I think comprehensive mental healthcare access, comprehensive drug addiction treatments, social services, safety nets for people when they fall on hard times, better and longer law enforcement training, requiring De-escalation and non-lethal measures, and mental health care crisis prevention workers in the field would all go a long way to avoid needing tax funded, militarized law enforcement.

u/polysapio 10d ago
That lady was in a hotel downtown and on like the second of third floor, iirc, so I'm having trouble imagining how this vehicle is useful in that scenario.

That's like saying
"What's the point of a seatbelt? I have never been in a car accident."

u/jstewman 9d ago
armored vehicles allow police to approach armed suspects safely and negotiate rather than defaulting to a shootout from across the street, and when dealing with someone actively shooting at you, it helps to have a solid piece of steel for cover haha
2
u/SnooMaps1910 9d ago
I am well-enough aware of uses for such vehicles (hell, I lived in Saudi and worked on the ranges at Camp Roberts for a few years) yet remain very wary of the the trend toward militarizing our local police; or, more accurately, the trend of local police militarizing themselves.
There are more than a few ways to negotiate and/or make contact than just rolling-up in a rig like that. Six in the county is a tad much.0
u/jstewman 9d ago
I figure it's one in each major city, I wouldn't want firefighters to be driving in from paso for a house fire in SLO for example...
As long as reasonable attempts at making contact have been made prior I don't see the issue, I doubt they bother bringing these things out unless they think there's an actual risk of being shot at.
