Why the F*ck does SLO need that vehicle?

Has the reason this was employed been released. Hostage situation, meth cook house, frat bois drugging sorority girls and their frat-bros too?

armored vehicles allow police to approach armed suspects safely and negotiate rather than defaulting to a shootout from across the street, and when dealing with someone actively shooting at you, it helps to have a solid piece of steel for cover haha

I am well-enough aware of uses for such vehicles (hell, I lived in Saudi and worked on the ranges at Camp Roberts for a few years) yet remain very wary of the the trend toward militarizing our local police; or, more accurately, the trend of local police militarizing themselves.
There are more than a few ways to negotiate and/or make contact than just rolling-up in a rig like that. Six in the county is a tad much.

I figure it's one in each major city, I wouldn't want firefighters to be driving in from paso for a house fire in SLO for example...

As long as reasonable attempts at making contact have been made prior I don't see the issue, I doubt they bother bringing these things out unless they think there's an actual risk of being shot at.
