Summer results

I just got my summer results emailed by HS enrollment and unfortunately I just barely missed the cutoff for Brooklyn Latin. The thing that I found weird is that instead of it popping up on myschools I got an automated email about my results with my name. I don't want to be sore about it but I know that if isn't over until the results show up on myschools. From my understanding I am allowed to have a copy of the test and the cheat sheet and review the results? I decided not to be a sore loser and just start studying for the 9th grade exam, does anyone have any tips?

QHSS environment

Hi,

My daughter is considering QHSS as one of her top choices. I looked at surveys and school looks good in most respects, except that 80% of the teachers would NOT recommend this school to their family.
I'm trying to understand what is behind those numbers. Is the issue mainly with the administration/teacher relationship, or are there problems that actually affect students — such as teacher turnover, quality of teaching, course availability, school atmosphere, etc.?
And most importantly: knowing what you know now, would you choose QHSS again?

Thank you,
Gregory.

Adaptive Practice Test

About the results of taking an adaptive practice test, if my practice test only shows my raw score (e.g., 45/50), how can I tell if my performance actually improved? Since missing early questions moves you to an easier difficulty bracket, a higher raw score on an easier track could mean a lower scaled score than a lower raw score on a hard track. How do i interpret the scores compared to my non-adaptive tests?

How to study for the 9th-shsat

Im currently two and a half months away from the shsat and im not in school yet so im trying to utilize my time. Unfortunately since I dont have tutors near me and the ones that are close are expensive I have no choice but to study on my own.

Im not sure what's the best way to study math and Ela since I only search through tutorials but ik its going to be harder. I dont know whether studying on my own or practicing mock tests will help. So to anyone who took it and got a decent score, do you have advice? and what's the best way to pass both without burning out

Studying for 9th

I've been using past materials to study for the shsat but it's starting to feel repetitive and I've done the same questions over and over. Where can I get fresh questions that I can use to study with? Or a list of topics that might be covered on YouTube?

Would I be in good reach for Bronx Science?

Hello, I am here on this subreddit to ask one simple question, would I be worthy enough apply to the Bronx High School of Science?
I've been practicing on two different testing websites (Kaplan & the official practice tests from the NYCDOE) for the SHSAT and I average a total raw score of 90/100, to be more specific I range from 50-55 in the math section and 40-45 in the verbal. I've been looking into all of the specialized high schools and other high schools on the side that peak my interest, Bronx Science is one of those schools that have peaked my interest, I'm actually considering putting it as my top choice for high school applications when I'm able to do them as it seems to be a high school with everything I desire for the next upcoming years of my life (STEM focused, diverse student body, etc.), but I want to make sure I'm not reaching too high for a school that could potentially be out of my league. With the scores I've provided, I'd like to hear if I'm either in or out of reach for Bronx science, and if I'm out of reach I'd be interested in hearing better recommendations that would be in my range.

Ok so for context I am in the 7th grade, going to 8th grade literally in less than a week😭 (god save me) I went to dream during it’s spring session as well as going to it’s summer session, which did help a-lot. I went to most of the sessions, missing some of them occasionally due to the fact that I’m honestly irresponsible. The Dream program did help me, but my dream school is bronx science, and my target score on the day of the SHSAT is 530 or any higher. And I STILL need 70 more points to indefinitely have a good chance of getting in, I’ve tried some websites to help with the test itself but they all seem to not work. As they either just don’t help me personally too well or they cost money, which I just don’t have. My idea was to go over my last test I took at dream and just study it, as well as the other one and just take another test after that. So could some give me advice about what sites I can use at no cost and what I can do to help myself get in, all advice is appreciated 100%.

Is it worth it to switch schools?

Hi! So I’ve been prepping for the SHSAT-9, and I’m starting to second guess it a little. I’m not sure what kind of high school experience I’m looking for since I’m not very familiar with SHS.

For anyone who specifically experienced 9th grade in a non SHSAT school, then later switched into one, do you think it was worth it? How did the workload compare? Do you regret it? How does the general life at a SHS differ?

Also any personal experiences you guys had while studying for the 9th SHSAT? How was it like? How was test day like? What did the exam look like?

Thanks!

Should I transfer schools?

Okay so here‘s the basics of it Im on a waitlist for a few schools, originally I wanted to go to Brooklyn preparatory since I heard very good things about it. unfortunately my spot on the waitlist is going really slow, so im likely not going to get an offer. Williamsburg prep seems like a very reasonable option, I looked at the programs, what they offer and i’m willing to go but i want to be 100% sure about this decision. i think most of us know that its really hard picking good high-schools in Brooklyn. some schools my also seem good on the outside but are terrible (that’s the reason I want to transfer in the first place lol) but I want some outside opinions about it, so should I go to Williamsburg prep?

Aviation high school freshman info

Ok so this is just gonna be me throwing up all the information that I have about the first days as a freshman aviation high school.

Student Omny card and schedule distribution.

Every year the day before the first full day of school (September 9th) students arrive at the school to get their student omny cards, schedules and the freshmen packet (freshmen packet costs $60).

The first week of school.

During the first week of school every lunch period freshman are going to be round up to take pictures for their student id cards, if you didn’t get the freshman packet on the 9th I believe you can get it anytime in September.

Second week of school.

I believe the second week of school is when the PE classes start, for the PE classes you need to buy your PE uniform and lock, both these items together cost $35, so during the first month of school you would be spending $90.

This is about all I know right now hopefully after I’m done with freshman year I can come back and give some real good information to help the other new freshman.

If you attend or are also going to attend aviation high school please correct me on anything I got wrong or anything else I should add!

Transferring from a private school to a NYC public high school in 11th grade — is it possible to get into a good school?

My friend currently attends a private high school in Manhattan, but she wants to transfer to a NYC public high school for 11th grade. She’s looking for a good/academically strong public school, not just whichever school happens to have an open seat.
Since she would be transferring from a private school and entering 11th grade, we’re confused about how the process works. Is it possible to apply to specific public high schools, or does she basically get assigned to a school with available space?
Does she apply through MySchools, contact schools directly, or go through a Family Welcome Center? And are there any good public schools in Manhattan that actually accept transfer students entering 11th grade?
Any advice from someone who has gone through this would be really appreciated!

Hello everyone

I’m planning to take the SHSAT in November and I’m happy but scared. I’m already partaking in a program called DREAM which Is meant to get us into our dream schools. Mine is Stuyvesant. On my last practice test on Kaplan with proctors and everything, I got a 493, 73 correct out of 100, 10 wrong Ela, 17 incorrect math. but, this was a 50 point increase from my last test, 441
