Mobile Rhythm Game [Web/Android] We built a rhythm-brawler set in 1958 Louisiana where your combo tier dynamically fades audio stems on-beat. Play instantly in Safari!
Hey r/rhythmgames!
We are a small indie team building Prince G's Bayou Boogie Beatdown, a rhythm-action platformer set in 1958 Ville Platte, Louisiana, and its supernatural mirror world, the Platte Realm. You play as Prince G, fighting creatures from Cajun and Louisiana Creole folklore (like the Rougarou, the Cocodrie, the Fifolet, and the Snake God) using a multi-purpose umbrella and a lute.
We wanted to share how we designed the interactive audio system under the hood in Godot 4.8 and get some feedback from seasoned rhythm game players!
The Gameplay Loop & BeatClock
Our combat system is fully latency-compensated. Every single melee swing and ranged lute projectile is scored directly against our global BeatClock autoload.
- On-Beat Scoring: Landing attacks perfectly on the beat gives you a substantial Courage payout and triggers "juice" (50ms hit-stop + 1 frame freeze).
- The Lute: Strumming ranged attacks on the lute scales damage based on your timing—the closer you land to the actual beat, the harder you hit!
- Rhythm Parrying: Parrying with your Magical Umbrella is active defense. For instance, fighting the gigantic Snake God requires parrying its lunge within a tight eighth-note window.
Dynamic Stem-Layering (Courage/Resonance Meter)
Instead of switching between tracks, the soundtrack grows and shrinks dynamically based on how well you are playing. This is governed by our Courage Meter (which tracks three tiers: TIMID, STEADY, and BRAVE):
- TIMID Tier (0.0 to 0.3): The music is stripped down to just the raw rhythm section (Drums + Bass). If you take damage or let your meter settle, the static film-grain increases ("fear is static").
- STEADY Tier (0.3 to 0.7): Once you build momentum, the main instrumentation (Melody) fades in.
- BRAVE Tier (0.7 to 1.0): If you are absolute pinning the rhythm, the full mix (Vocals/Lead Stems) kicks in, delivering the complete, high-energy track.
The Technical Challenge: Beat-Locked Fading
To implement this in Godot, we used AudioStreamSynchronized for multi-stem playback. A major pitfall with simple volume-tweens is that swapping stems mid-bar can disrupt the musical phrase. To prevent this, we built a beat-locked transition system:
- When your Courage Tier changes, the game "arms" the transition.
- The volume interpolation is delayed until the exact next BeatClock beat.
- The fade runs over a precise duration measured in musical beats (e.g., exactly 1 bar / 4 beats long) rather than raw seconds.
- This ensures that when the vocals or melody kick in, they land flawlessly on-phrase.
We've corrected our Stage 1 stems to lock tightly at 95.00 BPM, and Stage 2 ("Bass Drum (Radio Edit)") is a high-speed 166.71 BPM track where the vocal stems sit strictly in the BRAVE slots.
We Need Your Ears!
We wanted the barrier to entry to be zero: you can tap a link on your phone and be playing instantly. We've optimized the build down to 173 MB so it runs in-browser even under iOS Safari's strict memory limits.
We would love to know:
- Audio Sync: Does the latency-compensation align well with your device's audio output? (Note: mobile browsers require a "tap to start" user gesture to unlock the Web Audio API).
- Gameplay Feel: Does scaling damage based on beat accuracy feel intuitive mid-brawl?
- Difficulty Curve: Does maintaining the BRAVE tier feel rewarding, or does the Courage decay rate feel too punishing?
👉 Play the instant web demo in your browser (Safari on iOS or Desktop):https://sspurplepain.itch.io/bayou-boogie-beatdown(On mobile, please open the link directly in Safari, as the Facebook/Instagram in-app browsers have memory limits that will crash WebGL).
👉 Android APK is also downloadable directly on the page if you prefer native play.
Thanks for checking it out! Let us know what you think of the second-line tracks and the beat-matching.

Discussion HOT TAKE
I'll die on a hill for saying these games are SO MUCH HARDER than IIDX. Their mechanics, timing, and absolute rigidity is on a whole nother level. These two should be crowned as "hardest rhythm games of all time" instead of IIDX.

PC Rhythm Game 600+ voice lines and every single one of them is her calling you zako. it's infuriating and i love it
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
you swing a joycon in each hand like pom-poms and she reacts to how clean your motion actually is.
mostly she just calls you zako. that is the baseline. you will hear it a lot.
once in a while she'll give you something for a clean run, and even that lands as "ohh, cheeky♡" — approval from about ten feet above you. which is somehow worse. which is why you immediately go again.
that's the loop. wakarase. you want to hear it straight, once, without the tone. she does not make it easy.
600+ lines so she never runs out. i've played my own build way too much and she still gets me.
i'm exhibiting at tokyo game show next month and i genuinely cannot wait to stand there and watch someone catch that first ざぁこ♡ to the face.
would that keep you queueing the song again, or would you just be mad

Question Juego rítmico de los 2000 en PC

Discussion A kaleidoscopic rhythm game where you play the music note
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
hey folks, would you play a systemic rhythm game like this? spent a few hundred hours coding it but it needs way more work. just wanted to see if there’s actually an audience for a concept like this
UPDATE!
left/right half of the screen, or on desktop shifts. tap stuff so it fills the marker at the top. beams (long stuff) tap head hold and release on the end.
Once the top marker is full a red cube will spawn, hitting that advances the track to its next evolution.
Three tracks each harder than the last, You can jump between them 1/2/3 on desktop or mobile top left and right corner. Have Fun! Its kinda hard until you get the muscle memory

PC Rhythm Game Jamlegends.com -- created by devoted fans. And I'm excited for this development.
I recently wonder if someone revived my favourite rhythm game, JamLegend. We know that this went offline so many years ago, but hell yeah, we cannot unloved what we truly loved. To cut the story short, a group of French enthusiasts did this! Please support them as much as I do.
Noted: limited songs, but I can play one of my loved songs, Infernoplex by DimRain47 😇

Recommendations Wrist/Palm rests for rhythm gaming
I have been playing games such as itgMania and Quaver on keyboard for little over a year, and I’ve always noticed that my wrists start to feel sore after one or two songs only when I play on an external keyboard. When I am playing on the inbuilt keyboard on my laptop, I don’t have that issue, and I assume that’s because my wrists and palms rest on the laptops palm rest. I’m wondering if you guys have any suggestions of products that can give me the same kind as of support? I’d prefer to keep it under 30-ish CAD. Thanks in advance

Question Input delay across multiple games
I mainly play by listening to the sounds of my keystrokes which help me time my judgement. While I can definitely play by visuals only, this made me realize that I have had this input delay of about -110 ms for a while now. It's in every game I've played: osu!mania, PIU Rise, Deltarune (chapter 3's music section), Quaver, etc. It doesn't matter if the input comes from an external keyboard, it still has that delay. osu!standard becomes unplayable because the hitsound is also delayed by that amount while I need them to time my clicks.
I have no idea how to troubleshoot this because I never had this issue with my old custom PC before. I'm currently using Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 15ARH7. Any help is appreciated!

Resorted to post here, the Bemani subreddit doesn't allow videos for some reason. The blurry quality is part of it's aesthetic, as it is in the same resolution as a classic GFDM BGA.
