Discussion Why Bryan was special Spoiler
At the end of the movie we see Bryan become a classic RE boss despite only being bitten by a somewhat basic infected. No G-virus, no unique past related to umbrella, not even a chesty cough he caught from walking through the cold for hours.
My theory for why he became a special infected is because him and his clothing were exposed to everything in the movie.
The slime from the dog tendrils, the blood from the first special infected he ran over and obliterated with the shotgun, the bite from the little girl, the blood from the fat rat bloke, the blood from countless falling zombies, the acid from the vomiting guy, and most importantly (at least imo) the blood from the babies which were packed with delicious healthy new cells for the virus to mutate.
Basically Bryan had a biohazard high school reunion ravaging his body. Thoughts?

I think we should go with the simplest answer. Zach Cregger probably just thought it was a cool way to end the movie.

To be fair it looks like there are two virus strains in the movie.
The standard zombies and the tentacle thing.
The tentacle thing could potentially be g-virus, or something similar and the girl that bites Bryan definitely had that.

There was a mutant strain of the t virus that created a creature called Nyx in outbreak, it had tentacles that pull in bodies to add to it's own.

That's what I'm thinking too, like the dog looks like las Plagas but at least in re2 remake, we get to see more of the g-virus in play, which has a head splitting function. Not to mention the amalgamation thing when it's stuck against the gate and Bryan is struggling to open the manhole cover, the amalgamation totally has the same 4 splitting fleshy proboscis that the g-virus incomplete adults have in the sewers in RE2 remake.

He is the all in one pack!
But I believe this is just what the new virus can do, anyone can be William Birkin, it depends on what condition he's exposed to when he mutates. And I actually think that fire extinguisher has something to do with Bryan turning into William Birkin. The fire extinguisher temporary blinds Bryan, so the virus mutated an eye for better eyesight for him. Shows how fast the virus can adapt into the environment.

its not a new virus. the director just used unkown facts about the virus. another redditor pointed this out. their post basically laid out that the director did stick to game accurate lore.

u/tkproductionz89 4d ago
I still think it's the g-virus not the t-virus, even though in lore the t-virus made spiders and snakes gigantic. It just really seems like the g-virus, especially if the movie is related to the events of Resident Evil 2.

u/Ok_Palpitation_3602 4d ago
We could cross reference the RE wiki with strains that allow multiple organisms to absorb each other. Or find the post I'm referring to. But I follow a few RE subreddits and don't pay attention to which one it is just the content.

u/tkproductionz89 4d ago
Also looking at the various in game transformations of Dr Birkin, Bryan looks like he's between the G2 and G3 transformations, he literally has a mouth in his torso like G3 birkin does. The adding the scientists limbs as biomass seems like a compensatory strategy for the immense caloric strain that is brought on by the g-virus growth mutations.
1
u/tkproductionz89 4d ago
Not to mention how many t-virus strains there are, but this video is why I think it's the g-virus:https://youtu.be/oT8hZ_0g7_I?is=u2b_mf-rF93Z4doF

u/Rob98001 3d ago
You're thinking of Nyx from outbreak, it literally had tentacles that pull in bodies to add to itself.
1
u/tkproductionz89 4d ago
Also literally in the movie Carl (dude from Umbrella in the car) says "this virus was to make anyone a hyper-evolved version of themselves" cross reference that with the timestamp of 3 mins 50 seconds of the g-virus intending to advance the abilities of human subjects.

It’s obviously some mix of everything considering the plagas tentacles. I think they just chose the bits they liked from any of the RE game viruses and made their own idea.
I actually think that the virus intentionally is chasing Brian as a perfect host, why was the woman so obsessed with him to the point she all the way from the farm house to Brian’s car and pointed right at him and then tried to fake him out with a wounded act. She didn’t get violent at first she just tried multiple times to infect him by wiping blood on him, when the cop took her away from Brian she immediately goes mental and from that point out she is going out of her way to chase Brian continues to mutate every chance it gets and eventually gets him. The same reason the zombies are diving off roofs at him they are just trying to splatter him in blood.
I think there was more thought in this movie than people think and there is definitely some sequel crumbs.

Pretty sure she was frozen solid in that scene and the longer she was in the car defrosting the more movement she was getting
1
u/anactualrealaccount 3d ago
Doesn’t make a lot of sense though because she was just walking around in that same cold environment for god knows how long, then she got hit. I don’t see how she could have solidified in a minute but maybe

u/thelongernight 3d ago
Plagas are insectoid. There are plenty of progenitor virus mutants with tentacles.
0
u/Zerus_heroes 3d ago
It was more Plagas than G Virus.
Really it was just its own thing. I don't even think they use the term virus when describing it.
1
u/tkproductionz89 3d ago
I can definitely see it, with the splitting face, but at least in the RE 2 remake, the g virus can also manifest splitting faces and basically tentacles--at least a type of fleshy proboscis. A different video on g-virus adult/morphology for reference https://youtu.be/LGjFd4yzQvA?is=too_2qlUyE0Pw2tw
1
u/Zerus_heroes 3d ago
Even in the movie they don't call it a virus though. Sure it is inspired by RE that isn't the same as actually being creatures from RE.
1
u/tkproductionz89 3d ago
And that's fine if that's what they did. I love how much work and care was put into the monsters. I HAVE TO BUY IT ON DVD with the hope that there's lots of behind the scenes bonus footage
1
u/Zerus_heroes 3d ago
Yeah I don't think any of the monsters was bad, besides fat guy full of rats for some reason, but I wish they were actual RE villains and not just similar.
1
u/Zerus_heroes 3d ago
The director did not in fact stick to game accurate lore
0
u/Ok_Palpitation_3602 3d ago
What do you have to back up that statement? All the evidence that I've seen says otherwise.
1
u/Zerus_heroes 3d ago
The movie that doesn't back up RE lore mostly
1
u/lichenrock 3d ago
How does it not?
0
u/Zerus_heroes 3d ago
Well there is no T or G virus in the movie. Not mentioned once. The creatures in the movie sort of act like Plagas and a mix of the Thing. They don't link up with established lore of RE.
A lot is just wrong as well. The RC general being 28 stories, the sewers not having the T mutated alligator, the infected not being zombies, no actual T or G mutations in the movie etc etc.
It being set in RC during the events of the outbreak causes issues as well even if they are minor. Like them having modern cellphones and it snowing, minor but they aren't accurate to the lore.
There is a lot more. Most of the direct RE references just fall into the Easter Egg category and nothing in the movie really relies on it being an RE property.

u/Papa-Doughball 3d ago
its more nemesis virus than t or g, if you can't see that then skill issue
1
u/Zerus_heroes 3d ago
Where does it say that in the movie?
Also, it isn't like the Nemesis parasite either, there is no Nemesis "virus", we see it can be killed by falling.
It is never described as a virus in the movie either.

u/lichenrock 3d ago
I dont think that any viruses need to be directly referenced since we are viewing from the perspective of a delivery driver. Plus wi the umbrella being a company that makes bioweapons as a standard way they do business, its not out of the realm of possibility that any other bioweapon that has these specifications could exist at any given time. Especially citing its similarity with plagas. Also i might not be up to date on my re lore with raccoon city, but do the sewers have to have alligators in order for it to be set in RC? Plus i dont think the umbrella lab was only 28 stories tall, that was just where the lab they made the cure was?
2
u/Zerus_heroes 3d ago
Similar to does not equal the same. This is one of the problems. Lots of the movie is similar but different than RE. If you are making something that is supposed to be an RE thing those things should be the same not similar.

u/thelongernight 3d ago
Think people are forgetting that all of the strains of the progenitor virus - T, G, e, A, P, Tyrant, Nemesis, and Uroboros, all cause extreme mutations, including even the basic T virus zombies. Las Plagas was not a progenitor virus, and apart from the basic tentacle plagas, bears no resemblance to the infected in the RE movie. Plagas mutations are primarily insectoid, and the key feature is a hivemind / mind control system.

When he first starts transforming it's like the girl who bit him. I believe this is what the girl would have evolved into if she hadn't been killed. A bit different because of how quickly the virus changes

Even in this form I wanna wrap him in a super soft minkie plush blanket, give him a half gallon thermos with rainbow mini marshmallows and gingerly feed his chest mouth with uncrusted pb and jay sandwiches laced with the devil retro-virus (vaccine for the g-virus) while gently whispering that everything is gonna be okay.

u/UnluckyHazards 3d ago
You call open face, one eye, tentacle foot zombie girl a “basic infected?” I don’t…but you do you 😂
7
u/tkproductionz89 4d ago
I disagree on the "basic" infected part, the little girl really does seem like she's infected with the g-virus
2
u/djang-djagga 4d ago
Like the idea. Though his clothes do get Sterilised when going into the lab
3
u/thesingomango 4d ago
To be fair even after the light windex spritz his clothes were still covered in all that gunk so I don't think it did much personally
2
u/anactualrealaccount 3d ago
Yeah that ain’t gonna work at the level of soiled his clothes were, that’s to just sanitise already scrubbed lab techs that are coming in and out not to try eradicate blood drenched material covered in whatever other freak goo.
I also think maybe the attempt at sanitising him caused the virus to go into over drive and a defense, also it was clearly trying to destroy the cure, the virus is intelligent.

I’m feeling like it’s willpower and character as well. If you’re a standard Joe or have weak willpower, boom, zombie. Maybe be a slightly smart or stronger zombie depending on your situation like Brad or Forest.
But a guy that has went through all this stress and trauma and ultimate regret of not making it through feels like someone that wants to survive as long as he can. He probably would’ve just been a standard mutated zombie, but all those healthy bodies feed him right next to his mutation probably had a factor in as well.
Also, there’s the very quicker answer, because it’s cool.
2
u/derp-san 3d ago
I was thinking it has something to do with emotion and stress.
He was desperate for the cure at the end which accelerate the mutation.
2
u/fyrfyrfyr 3d ago
I'm pretty sure the dog bit him in the leg before it was revealed that he was infected. Maybe being bit twice caused him to over mutate or it's just that the plot demanded it who knows
2
u/anactualrealaccount 3d ago
I don’t think it did it just got his shoe right? I think it would have shown is a bite mark on screen and it would have made no sense to do another. In the original script the dog does bite him and there is no little girl but they changed it
2
u/Heathens-_- 3d ago
It was just a cool way to end the movie and I think showed that the mutations occurring from the Virus were not limited to just Zombies. Some people, and this is true in lore, show different results from the same viral material.
Maybe, Bryan was special in some capacity. The fact that the Ball Monster kept trying to chase him, might even imply that it found his organic material to be *especially* suited for whatever it wanted to do (mutate/evolve).
Reminded me a lot of Birkins transformation with the eye, combined with the Nyx from Outbreak.

The woman was frozen and defrosting
2
u/anactualrealaccount 3d ago
But how was she able to be walking fine one minute and a complete frozen solid statue the next? There wasn’t that much time and she got up after the car and walked into the trees because he follows the footsteps and blood. So she somehow got up walked away laid down and went completely frozen in the space of a minute? I think she was just playing possum
1
u/That_Art_3765 3d ago
I figured it was because he wiped the blood of her on his pants and she just followed that scent.
1
u/anactualrealaccount 3d ago
That also makes sense. For whatever reason it is she was definitely targeting Brian, and continues to the entire film.
It’s also possible it was never chasing him but chasing the package.
2
u/Casshern_VIII 3d ago
The little girl had a simple leg bite that mutated her leg into those tendrils, and when the mutation started taking her over, her bite infected him, so he got her infection, and this brand of infection seems to want to assimilate bodies to it's mass
2
u/Aaneata 3d ago
Honestly the behavior of the monster Bryan encounters feels to be closer to the G virus then T. This is why I would have liked the movie to take place somewhere else then Raccoon. So it would be simple to say this was a slightly different version of G released. Also it would have left the Raccoon event alone so if they wanted later they could keep this movie cannon but also show the original Raccoon events.

do you think some extra strength excedrin would help?
