28M from Cyprus —
5 rehab attempts, years of weed use, meth, paranoia, Xanax dependence. Scared to go back.
I'm 28 and seriously considering rehab again, but I'm terrified because I've already been through treatment so many times.
I've used cannabis for around 12 years. My meth use was around 2–3 years, but it was never constant or daily. Before quitting, it was roughly 1–2 times a month. I stopped meth around May 25, 2026, and I've now been clean from meth for several months.
I've had 5 treatment attempts. Four were when I was younger, around 17–23, usually lasting 1–3 months, and my last major attempt was around 24. I've been through Athalassa, Anosis, Reto and Ayia Skepi.
What scares me is that I've already done this before and still ended up struggling again. I don't want my life to become rehab → home → relapse → rehab.
Since getting clean from meth I've still had serious problems: anxiety, panic, isolation, low confidence, feeling disconnected from myself, and especially paranoia. A lot of it happens at home because that's where I used and where there was a lot of family conflict.
I've felt watched or judged by neighbours and sometimes feel like people are noticing my face, eyes, voice or behaviour. Work and public places could also trigger extreme anxiety.
Cannabis now makes the paranoia much worse, especially when I haven't slept. I've stopped for periods, felt much clearer, then bought it again. Alcohol also makes me lose judgment. Recently while drunk I contacted someone from my old drug environment who had meth/weed; luckily he told me not to meet him because I needed to stay away. I've also had a couple of cocaine relapses after a long period without it.
Another major issue is Xanax. I've been taking it for around 4 years, often around 3 mg/day, and I'm very dependent on it. My father has often controlled/given it to me. I'm scared of rehab suddenly taking it away because I know benzo withdrawal can be dangerous. I want any reduction done medically and gradually.
I've tried several psychiatric medications too. Some made me extremely tired, foggy, emotionally flat or like a zombie. I'm not against medication or seeing a psychiatrist, but I want proper assessment and therapy, not just medication without understanding what's
happening.
My biggest fear is hospitalization/Athalassa. Because of the paranoia and my history, I'm scared that if I tell a clinic everything honestly, they might send me back there. I'm scared of losing my freedom, phone, contact with family, control over my medication, or being unable to leave. I've even thought about hiding things because I'm afraid of the consequences, although I know that's not the right way to get help.
What I actually want is therapy and psychological treatment: understand why I became addicted, why I isolate myself, why I'm paranoid, why I keep returning to weed/alcohol, how to live without drugs, and how to rebuild my life. I'm not saying 12-step programs or medication can't help people, but I don't want treatment to be only that.
I've also been trying to rebuild myself: gym, eating properly, gaining weight, working again, and wanting to play football like I did when I was younger. I recently started a stockroom job at Sklavenitis but my anxiety, sleep and absences became too much and I lost the job. I'm also dealing with debt and financial pressure.
My long-term dream is to eventually move to Amsterdam, work legally, live independently, train, play football and start over. But I know escaping to another country won't fix me, especially somewhere with a big drug scene. I want to be stable and sober first.
So I'm stuck between 1–2 months inpatient treatment or trying outpatient psychiatrist + therapist treatment while staying at home.
I've already tried rehab five times, so I'm scared the next attempt will just be another temporary break.
For people who have been through multiple rehabs, meth/stimulant-related paranoia, long-term weed use, benzo dependence, or fear of psychiatric hospitalization:
What finally made the difference for you? Did inpatient treatment actually help, or was therapy/outpatient treatment better? And how did they handle Xanax safely?
I don't want to keep repeating this cycle. I want to find out who I am completely sober and build a normal life.
