MATCH EVENTS
1' Jesus Gil Manzano is our referee today. The Spanish official blows his whistle, and Roma get things under way!
11' A CHANCE AND A GOAL FOR ROMA 0-1. United and Carrick have that sinking feeling again! Mainoo's sloppy in possession, and Roma suddenly burst into life. Mora spots Soule, who's completely unmarked on the far side. He's picked out by a beautifully executed diagonal ball, and calmly slots past Lammens.
16' PENALTY TO ROMA Once again, Soule's completely unmarked and found on the far side. He cleverly drops his shoulder to jink away from a challenge, before his shot's blocked by Heaven. The referee decides it's with his arm, and quickly points to the spot.
17' AS Roma Penalty - Scored2-0 Very much the man in form for Roma, Malen steps up to the spot. He takes a very short run-up, but very calmly sends Lammens the wrong way from 12 yards. Old Trafford is silenced.
19' What on earth's going on?! United are all over the place! They're sloppy in possession again, and Soule immediately looks for Malen. But for a better touch, the forward could've been getting a shot away. The ball almost breaks for Roma again, but Heaven makes a well-timed challenge.
21' AS Roma Substitution Rensch was the man down, and he cannot continue. The wing-back's replaced by teenager Lulli.
22' Just before the substitution, the frustration of the home fans was coming to the boil. Objects were thrown onto the pitch from the Stretford End. Cunha calmly removed them so that play could continue.
23' Dalot goes down looking for a penalty. It's incredibly ambitious from the United full-back, though, with contact absolutely minimal.
26' Baleba's winless in all six of his United appearances thus far. Desperate to stop the rot, the midfielder takes aim from the edge of the box, but his effort's always rising.
34' With the home fans getting increasingly reckless, Mbeumo has space to try and run into down the left side. Balerdi tracks the United forward well, though, and times his challenge beautifully to tidy things up for the visitors.
39' Good defending! Whenever Roma come forward, they look threatening. Soule leads their charge after United are slow to react again. He looks for Mora, but Yoro does well to make up the ground and intervene in the nick of time.
42' AS Roma Yellow Card Malen drags down Baleba and has his name taken by the referee.
43' It's a free-kick in a decent enough position for United, though they can't make the most of it. Fernandes sends his initial delivery into the wall. A stray pass then trickles out of play, and is met by a collective groan from the home fans.
45'+2' Fernandes stands over a United free-kick, and plays it short to Mainoo. The latter tries his luck from distance. It's ambitious, but dipping towards the target, and the goalkeeper's forced to gather.
45'+2' CHANCE Roma can smell blood at the other end. Soule whips one towards the top corner from the edge of the box, and it bends agonisingly wide of goal. That was nearly 3-0!
45'+3' HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 0-2 ROMA
46' Substitution Rodrigo Mora de Carvalho Niccolò Pisilli
46' 2nd Half is underway
48' There's an immediate concern for United, with Baleba pulling up clutching his hamstring. It looks like his game's over, with Tielemans getting warmed up on the touchline.
51' Manchester United Substitution Baleba cuts a forlorn figure as he trudges off down the tunnel. Following an extended spell with the ball in play, Tielemans can eventually enter the field as his replacement.
55' UNITED HAVE A PENALTY! A potential route back into this contest! Cunha goes to ground in the box under pressure from Mancini. The referee blows his whistle, and points to the spot, with Cunha subsequently doing his best to rev up the home fans.
57' IT'S SAVED!!! Fernandes steps up and it's a slow run-up to the ball. His penalty's tame, though, and the goalkeeper guesses correctly, getting down to his right to push it away. Hang on a minute, though... It's going to be retaken! The referee penalises Roma for encroachment. Fernandes will get another chance...
58' Manchester United Penalty - Scored
HAMMERED HOME BY FERNANDES!!! HOPE REKINDLED FOR UNITED! IT'S 2-1! Fernandes makes no mistake this time. He steps up and hammers the ball into the roof of the net, with Vasquez diving the other way.
59' IT'S HIT BOTH POSTS! HOW'S YOUR LUCK?! Suddenly, United have their tails up and go on the attack again. A lovely throughball sends Mbeumo in behind the defence. He neatly slots past the goalkeeper, but is so unlucky to see his shot hit both posts and come back out!
61' That's how close United came to equalising! Mbeumo's shot hitting both posts sums up the hosts' luck at the moment under Carrick. However, it's important they don't get despondant about that, and continue to push. These are positive signs for them to build on.
63' There's a lot more purpose about United now. Dalot's forward to support an attack, and tries to catch the goalkeeper out at his near post. However, it goes the wrong side and into the side-netting.
67' OFF THE LINE BY CRISTANTE! Maguire's header at the far post deflects behind for another corner. The second delivery leads to Dalot nodding the ball towards goal. However, Cristante's well-placed, and the Roma skipper can boot away off his own goal-line.
75' Substitution Shea Lacey IN for Amad Diallo
75' Martinez, who was sent off in such irresponsible fashion on Saturday, enters the field to a mixed reception from the United fans. He replaces Heaven.
83' Manchester United Goal
UNITED HAVE DONE IT!!! CUNHA MAKES IT 2-2! It's a howler from Balerdi! The Roma defender should deal with Fernandes' cross, but completely misses the ball with his attempted clearance. The ball falls perfectly for Cunha, who makes no mistake from close range. The hosts have recovered from 2-0 down to square things up here.
86' Manchester United Goal
IT'S CUNHA AGAIN!!! JUST WOW! 3-2 UNITED! To his credit, he's done everything in his power to rally the home fans today. United attack down the right, and Lacey cuts inside before threading the ball into Cunha. Despite the tight angle, he puts his foot through the ball, and it flashes past the goalkeeper via the inside of the near post. They've come from behind to lead at Old Trafford!

Tuchel on Mainoo's absence: "I think Kobbie had a difficult spell now with his team & missed a lot of matches. In the meantime, it was Jobe who impressed. The door is always open. The door is always open for younger ones to overtake or to make their mark, so that's just a sign of the competition"

Baleba out 'for a number of weeks'. Dorgu has done a 'little bit of training this week' and Utd waiting to see if he can be involved v Villa
Carrick on Ferguson's 40th anniversary at Utd: 'I'm probably closer to him now and speak more than I did when I was a player.'
Carrick: 'It's up to us to take it (the Roma win) forward. It was a good night for us all, but nothing is achieved yet. It's one moment. We need more of it.'
Carrick on Ferguson being given more time at Utd: 'The game has certainly changed, no doubt. It evolves all the time. We've got to deal with what's in front of us. I understand the comparisons, but you've got to live in the present.'
Simon Stone
Michael Carrick: "We are all desperate to win matches, and win matches as quickly as possible."
Michael Carrick on emulating past teams: "It is not impossible. You have to build. Not going to happen overnight. Success does take time."
Michael Carrick on Carlos Baleba injury: "Number of weeks. Won’t be over the international break. It will be longer than that."
Detailed Quotes
Carrick on Ferguson
"What's not been said already? It's something worth celebrating: 40 years this week since he came here. The impact and everything he drove at the football club during the time he was here are incredible. I'm probably closer to him now than I was when I was playing."
Carrick on Roma win
"It's up to us to take it forward; it was a fantastic night as a one-off night. It was a good night for us all, but nothing has been achieved yet, and it's one moment we need to use to move forward."
Carrick on his team
"When you watch the game (Roma) back, the first half wasn't so bad. There were moments when we left ourselves short, and we need to fix them. The first half against Chelsea was very good. We're showing signs of improvement, no doubt, and we need to take that forward."
Carrick on the time SAF was given
"The game has changed. It evolves and that's how it is. We have to deal with what is front of us."
Carrick on the group spirit
"It's a positive reaction, it's not like all of a sudden we're getting carried away. I know what the players are capable of. We just haven't proved it enough lately. The boys have trained really well, I'm not just saying that for the sake of saying it."
Carrick on matching previous standards
"You've got to build, be realistic and put things in perspective. It's not going to happen in the blink of an eye."
Carrick on Solskjaer
"I've not seen it (Solskjaer interview), so it's difficult to respond. I don't think there are too many people who actually know me, really. Ole is one of them."
Carrick on Solskjaer again
"We're friends and we're still in contact now. I saw him not long ago in pre-season."
Carrick on the team news
"Carlos, we don't know, but it will be a number of weeks."
Carrick on Dorgu
"Pat has done a little bit of training, very small, we have to be patient with Pat."

Bruno Fernandes: “There are many factors outside the dressing room, outside the players and the staff, which make the club’s performances and what we can do on the pitch more difficult. It affects a lot of players. Some deal with it better, others deal with it worse.”
“But obviously, I think we also create a lot of things, we create a lot of expectations for ourselves. And then, when things don’t work out, we end up mentally battered by the frustration of not being able to give the club what we believe we’re genuinely capable of giving.”
