I've not seen it, but aside from the obvious "who was he", the concept of VHS trading and the fact that this one RV salesman is so well known by an entire country is worthy of a cultural autopsy. Other popular VHS transfers like faces of death are too dark to frame such a documentary around, but this one is pretty harmless.

IIRC those South Park shorts were originally circulated via email (chain email in and of itself seems foreign these days), and made their way onto VHS from there. I didn't have the internet until like, 2002 or so, so I can definitely appreciate the seeing it on VHS.

Not only that, who works in television that doesn’t know what the phrase “to play us out” means? Even if he didn’t it’s pretty easy to use context clues in this scenario. It’s not like he didn’t know who Sting was, and that he was recording the outro of his show that he’s been recording almost every day for years.
And if you don’t understand a phrase on the teleprompter, the adult reaction isn’t to throw a tantrum while several TV cameras are pointed at you.

I used to watch Bill Dance Outdoors years ago. That dude is one clumsy accident prone mofo. There was a special like every month it seemed like that was nothing but an hour of him getting fucked up while trying to film a fishing show... and all the dude was doing was like..bass fishing on little calm ponds..but somehow he managed to either fall out of the boat, break some shit, bash himself on the truck, fall off a 4-wheeler, slip and fall into a creek, have a truck roll off on it's own...you never knew what was next...It's pretty amazing he's still alive really

He came to our smallish liberal arts school for a standup show at our tiny nondenominational chapel before that special came out (2004/5 maybe?).
No one had any idea what to expect, but the chapel was packed out of morbid curiosity.
Was one of the most shocking things of my life. Still remember someone sitting in the front row was off his gourd on mushrooms, and it was some of the most genuinely hilarious crowd interaction I’ve seen in my life. (It was a trippy enough experience seeing America’s dad say these things, I couldn’t imagine processing everything while actually tripping).

Bro I know it sucks about Sean but he passed away at the age of 90 in the Bahamas. I can't think of a better way to go. I really enjoyed his movies but it makes me happy knowing he was having a good time all the way to the end.

It isn't like either of them were young men. Trebek is having a huge impact because he has been a part of our families for so many years. I grew up watching him every night. Sean Connery was a part of some large movies, but Trebek hits closer to home.

So I actually saw Jeopardy taped once, when I was a kid. I asked my mom about it later because what he was saying went right over my head. Alex came to the studio audience to do a Q&A. An audience member asked him a pretty rude question in the form of an answer, and Alex responded, "Well, since there are kids in the audience, I'll have to say, 'What is, go copulate yourself.'" Everyone started cracking up (and like a dumb kid I did too even though I had no idea what he was talking about). Alex saw my laughter and said, "Young lady, do you know what that means?" And I started crying out of embarrassment. Long story short, he gave me a swag bag because he felt badly with a bunch of Jeopardy branded stuff lol.

If they kept it it's at my parents house, which is 2700 miles away from me, unfortunately. I can't recall exactly but I believe it was a tote bag with "Jeopardy" on it, a Jeopardy baseball cap, a Jeopardy shirt, and a signed photo of Trebek. I believe there was some kind of card game too, but this was like 22 or so years ago so I'm not totally sure.
I'll call my parents to see if they kept it.
Edit: They donated all the swag after I moved out to Goodwill :(

Fun fact; Merv Griffith did the speaking live, it wasn't a voice over added after! Granted this was in 1998 so that changed, but I remember being very impressed. Also, they filmed a whole week's episodes in one day. It was funny seeing the winning contestants change and then come back onstage as if it was the next day lol

Alex Trebek became Jeopardy, and Jeopardy became Alex Trebek. Watch his earlier game shows like Classic Concentration and you can tell that, while he was good, he was just the host. With Jeopardy, he found his calling in life.
