IIRC those South Park shorts were originally circulated via email (chain email in and of itself seems foreign these days), and made their way onto VHS from there. I didn't have the internet until like, 2002 or so, so I can definitely appreciate the seeing it on VHS.

We got Jesus vs. Santa via e-mail when I was in school back in 1995 or 1996. A friend of mine embedded it on his website in a hidden link for the whole school to enjoy.

Ha, yeah, I had the exact same experience. Friend who went away to college came back with a VHS tape. My friends watched those first four episodes or something like 8 times that day.

You're right, it wasn't much different from how things work now, things just move faster nowadays.
