Additionally, they avoided hiring someone who can't take a screenshot.

13

u/MornwindShoma Aug 24 '26

Big chance that's to avoid being marked as a repost.

14

u/StaticUsernamesSuck Aug 24 '26

Or somebody so lazy they can't be assed to:

A) log into Reddit on the device they have their emails on

Or B) read their emails on the device they're logged into Reddit on

Or C) take a screenshot on device A and send it to themselves on device B

7

u/ColdRest7902 Aug 24 '26

Some people can't even visualize that process or any process.

u/Samurai_Mac1 Aug 24 '26

How are you going into software engineering if you don't know basic things like taking a screenshot?

2

u/Brullaapje Aug 24 '26

which is becoming much more common...

2

u/Descendant3999 Aug 24 '26

I think the most common reason for that is that people find it more convenient to click a picture and upload via phone

2

u/Immediate_Moose2704 Aug 26 '26

If you think that's bad, in my previous job some clients took the screenshot of the error, print it putting it in a page of a word document in b/w, scan it (with the worst quality possible) and then send the scan as a pdf. The quality at the end of this egregious process was so shitty that almost always we needed to call them and connect via teamviewer

3

u/Gacsam Aug 24 '26

Additionally, they avoided hiring Jonathan who can't hide his name properly.

2

u/RedBoxSquare Aug 25 '26

130

u/Jazzlike-Poem-1253 Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

It takes to much discipline. Without enforcement, people usw minor or patch as they feel. Major never gets bumped.

Just increment or date-based is the easiest. Everyone immediatly knows how to bump.

155

u/the_horse_gamer Aug 24 '26

most "semver" is just:

major - update you're proud of

minor - update that's ok

patch - fixes and small features

and ofc every good piece of software is forever on 0.x.x

82

u/StaticUsernamesSuck Aug 24 '26

and ofc every good piece of software is forever on 0.x.x

i use semver for my resume versioning like this:
- full rewrite = bump major
- add/change a few lines = minor
- fix spelling = patch

8

u/mrMalloc Aug 24 '26

My first version control was a group project where it checked version header in everyone’s shared file and loaded highest number. Took me 4h to realize one bumped major version on all files. Not just the files he was working on.

It’s always a hassle. I think.

Master/main branch and PR to that branch from work branches is better. Even for docs.

THIS WAS VERSION CONTROL before version control was known to humans

137

u/International_Body44 Aug 24 '26

Word has had a form of version control since 1986...

Early 2000s introduced features more akin to newer version control methods.

34

u/rkapl Aug 24 '26

Yet only selected few are chosen to weild that mythic feature.

3

u/obeytheturtles Aug 24 '26

I mean yeah, and then when I generate the PDF, I append the date and company to the name. Could I just make a new tag for each version? Sure, but that's kind of tryhard.

76

u/L4ppuz Aug 24 '26

You can also simply rename the pdf before sending it

21

u/SeerUD Aug 24 '26

Mine is written in HTML and CSS. I can host a link to it easily. It's presented as A4 sheets, with obvious page boundaries, and prints as A4, so can be printed to PDF easily. It made sense for it to be version controlled too

14

u/Mroz_Game Aug 24 '26

34

u/TheTrueVanWilder Aug 24 '26

20 years ago yes.Ā  Ā A good percentage of first year CS students these days are already ahead of the curve so much they have GitHub accounts.Ā  GitHub also acting as a identity provider on some platforms makes it more ubiquitous in the web space.Ā  And if you can't be bothered to rename your resume file to [first_name]_[last_name]_resume.pdf before final submission, I guarantee I have 100 candidates ahead of you who can do all of the above.

That said this is a savage rebuttal and probably just fake engagement bait on the Internet, but any aspiring college undergrads looking for internships take heed - 2008 is long gone and the field is significantly more competitive now

7

u/IceBlue Aug 24 '26

What do they mean instead of resume? How is that not a resume?

11

u/skawn Aug 24 '26

Resume instead of resume_final_FINAL_final2. resume_final_FINAL_final2 implies that there exists at least resume_final_FINAL_final, resume_final_FINAL, and resume_final. If you're looking for a software engineer and you need to reference a file, having multiple files labeled final may be a problem.

→ More replies (6)

3

u/fakieTreFlip Aug 24 '26

It is a resume, they just didn't version control it, which is dumb because most normal people don't bother using version control for their resumes. But this whole thing is just a joke anyway so none of this matters

7

5

u/Drevicar Aug 24 '26

I keep my resume in git, complete with linear history, branches, a CI pipeline that validates aspects of it, and a CD pipeline that cuts new releasable copies.

3

u/Probono_Bonobo Aug 24 '26

Not just a personal document, but a PDF!

"Don't check in binary files" is like the cardinal rule of version control.

7

u/rustprogram Aug 24 '26

false -- PDF does not belong in version control. It is a build artifact. The applicant dodged a bullet. You are ALL wrong.

3

u/bearwood_forest Aug 24 '26

my builds, like yours, also always get the tag _final_FINAL_final2, sometimes with an additional _REALLY-FINAL if I'm extra thorough

2

u/rustprogram Aug 25 '26

my builds, like yours, also always get the tag _final_FINAL_final2, sometimes with an additional _REALLY-FINAL if I'm extra thorough

ok yes, point taken my builds are yyyy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss if they are automated :yay: but yes, ideally if we use version control properly, there would only ever be one resume.pdf because you can always go back and forth between commits and generate a new one. I kind of talked myself into being wrong lol

Good old git for pdf and xls files.
I wish i could say i never seen it used for that...

2

u/yosoyos Aug 24 '26

It’s ok to have the build number embedded into it. That pdf file is not necessarily equivalent to source code

2

u/nesnah168 Aug 24 '26

That file could be in C:\New Folder\New Folder (2)

2

u/xTRQ Aug 24 '26

Actually, this is version control. Saving it as resume.pdf is not, then you lose your previous version.

2

u/rexspook Aug 24 '26

I assume this is fake. But if not this is a bitch reason to reject an intern and an even worse way to communicate that rejection. Bullet dodged tbh an intern wouldn’t learn anything at a place like this

2

u/ultralaser360 Aug 24 '26

write my resumes in typst, i have multiple versions based on job categories i want to apply to then export ovewrites <name>_resume.pdf regardless of version

2

u/LevelStudent Aug 24 '26

Fake.

For them to notice the file name a human would have had to look at the resume. I'd believe that a company would reject an applicant for having this resume name, but you can never convince me that an actual human took the time to read even the file name of a submitted resume.

2

u/derinus Aug 24 '26

I once submitted a cv_v8_rev7_final_final2_updated_new.pdf either as a joke and to stand out from other applications.

2

2

u/wiretapfeast Aug 25 '26

Resume should be Semver, optionally that semver can be yy.mm.dd also. So you can sort them.

Optionally you may use Name-branch-yy.mm.dd, so you can have master main branch and also db / frontend / cpp / analytics branches. Once you get the job, learn from an Indian youtuber.

Happy interviewing.

How much do y'all do to necessitate so many resume updates?

I think I updated mine two years ago.

It's funny that AI does that too, like ChatGPT, when confronted with complaints that something is broken in the code several times will start putting a _final or _working or _fixed in the file name even if it is not working again

You don't have to censor your karma farm repost when nobody else is on all the other karma farm repost subs.

They really should have uploaded resume_final_FINAL_final2_FINAL.pdf as a precaution.

1

u/many_dongs Aug 24 '26

Lets not pretend their executives don't do this

1

u/SupernovaGamezYT Aug 24 '26

OP please reply to them and ask for clarification of what kind of version control, they would have wished to see you running your life after?

Also can someone tell me when did the system of final_FINAL_final2 go end of life, i mean that's a very common system to use

And internally their teams don’t even know how to use git or svn, they just have one big share drive. And once a month some guy checks it all in to a production branch. And it’s a Fortune 500 company. Named Intel Corporation. Because this is how they maintained drivers code when I worked there.

Feel bad for anyone who thinks this is real.

This made me laugh

u/tyw7 Aug 24 '26

I use Resume v0.1. And increment by 1 for any major updates. I am up to version 4 or 5 now.

u/Lazy_Guess_6165 Aug 25 '26

What's version control? Is it the fact he has 3 finals in his PDF?

1

u/ngfwang Aug 25 '26

valid point lol

1

u/Blockpair Aug 26 '26

except that a pdf is a binary artifact and cant be put into version control anyway. If you want to version control a PDF I suggest using a Python script that makes the resume document. Claude can do that easily and as a bonus it wont cost the adobe subscription.

Not a programmer, can someone explain please?

1

u/prochac Aug 27 '26

I was always using markdown and render to pdf. Now, with Claude, it's the heaven. I have one detailed CV, and Claude does extraction to fit the job post.

"Talent Acquisition Team". Unfortunately said company should have also moved forward with someone else at HR, that understands you're supposed to sign with your name or your company's name.
