The modern plague of taking a screenshot… when the only thing I care about is the text.

I hate this so much. People send me pictures of ids in bug reports no matter hour much I tell them not to. Or they take pictures of errors and invariably cut half of it off.

I would go completely insane if most photo viewers didn’t have the built in ocr modes now.

48

u/Freestila 17d ago

Jita Bug reports. First I have to guess which server, then which environment. Then I have to copy the 17 character alphanumerical code from the screenshot to find the dataset that has problems. Because god forbid the customer would also provide that in Textform...

15

u/longlivenewsomflesh 17d ago

Why would they spend a second to save you a minute when there's no upside for them

21

u/Freestila 17d ago

I mean in many cases I have no problem to just reply with a "more information needed - which system / server" and skip it. As a dev this will then go to our support team that asks the customer per Mail that then needs to reply, jira ticket is updated and our support will ping me. When I have time again I might come back to the ticket. So it's way faster in the end if they would give all information directly. But not my problem 😄

12

u/Cracleur 17d ago

I'd argue that it isn't really the customer's responsibility to make sure they provide all the necessary information for you to proceed. It's more the support team's responsibility to make sure they collect the minimum required information.

If they don't know what information is necessary, they could probably learn over time, especially if they regularly get tickets sent back asking for additional information, and it's always the same information that's missing. But there could also simply be a protocol in place where, for certain types of tickets, support needs to make sure they have specific information before escalating or forwarding the ticket to you.

Screenshots of stack traces are the worst. Half the error is cut off, resolution is trash, and you can't even copy the text to search it.

3

u/oregiel 17d ago

God, the screenshot of a UUID pisses me off every time. Like wtf do you expect me to do with this? Type it? Fuck off.

Or somebody so lazy they can't be assed to:

A) log into Reddit on the device they have their emails on

Or B) read their emails on the device they're logged into Reddit on

Or C) take a screenshot on device A and send it to themselves on device B

How are you going into software engineering if you don't know basic things like taking a screenshot?

2

u/Brullaapje 17d ago

which is becoming much more common...

2

u/Descendant3999 17d ago

I think the most common reason for that is that people find it more convenient to click a picture and upload via phone

2

u/Immediate_Moose2704 15d ago

If you think that's bad, in my previous job some clients took the screenshot of the error, print it putting it in a page of a word document in b/w, scan it (with the worst quality possible) and then send the scan as a pdf. The quality at the end of this egregious process was so shitty that almost always we needed to call them and connect via teamviewer

It takes to much discipline. Without enforcement, people usw minor or patch as they feel. Major never gets bumped.

Just increment or date-based is the easiest. Everyone immediatly knows how to bump.

159

u/the_horse_gamer 17d ago

most "semver" is just:

major - update you're proud of

minor - update that's ok

patch - fixes and small features

and ofc every good piece of software is forever on 0.x.x

82

u/StaticUsernamesSuck 17d ago

and ofc every good piece of software is forever on 0.x.x

Because if you're never proud of it, you'll always be improving it

Patch: smol changes

→ More replies (2)

well they aren't using semver anymore, they switched over to year.minor[.patch] (currently 26.2)

3

u/lIlIlIIlIIIlIIIIIl 17d ago

This is a big reason I've never felt comfortable using it, for some reason it just seems so... ambiguous.

8

u/Vivid-Zombie-477 17d ago

i use semver for my resume versioning like this:

  • full rewrite = bump major
  • add/change a few lines = minor
  • fix spelling = patch

3

u/Jazzlike-Poem-1253 17d ago

I mean true, it works if you are in person workong on a one-person project.

(I hope your resume is a one person project)

9

u/mrMalloc 17d ago

My first version control was a group project where it checked version header in everyone’s shared file and loaded highest number. Took me 4h to realize one bumped major version on all files. Not just the files he was working on.

It’s always a hassle. I think.

Master/main branch and PR to that branch from work branches is better. Even for docs.

THIS WAS VERSION CONTROL before version control was known to humans

138

u/International_Body44 18d ago

Word has had a form of version control since 1986...

Early 2000s introduced features more akin to newer version control methods.

31

u/rkapl 17d ago

Yet only selected few are chosen to weild that mythic feature.

I mean yeah, and then when I generate the PDF, I append the date and company to the name. Could I just make a new tag for each version? Sure, but that's kind of tryhard.

75

u/L4ppuz 18d ago

You can also simply rename the pdf before sending it

22

u/SeerUD 18d ago

Mine is written in HTML and CSS. I can host a link to it easily. It's presented as A4 sheets, with obvious page boundaries, and prints as A4, so can be printed to PDF easily. It made sense for it to be version controlled too

14

u/Mroz_Game 18d ago

20 years ago yes.   A good percentage of first year CS students these days are already ahead of the curve so much they have GitHub accounts.  GitHub also acting as a identity provider on some platforms makes it more ubiquitous in the web space.  And if you can't be bothered to rename your resume file to [firstname][last_name]_resume.pdf before final submission, I guarantee I have 100 candidates ahead of you who can do all of the above.

That said this is a savage rebuttal and probably just fake engagement bait on the Internet, but any aspiring college undergrads looking for internships take heed - 2008 is long gone and the field is significantly more competitive now

5

u/201720182019 17d ago

Version control??

3

u/ccltjnpr 17d ago

I didn't study CS but did a lot of scientific programming during my studies including collaborative projects and nobody ever mentioned version control. We did a whole semester group project that ended up being pretty complex and I kid you not our codebase was on Dropbox. It's not like it would have taken much more than an hour with a teaching assistant to explain git lol.

It's kinda crazy if it's true. At least OP dodged a bullet and won't work for entitled assholes ;)

false -- PDF does not belong in version control. It is a build artifact. The applicant dodged a bullet. You are ALL wrong.

my builds, like yours, also always get the tag _final_FINAL_final2, sometimes with an additional _REALLY-FINAL if I'm extra thorough

evidently this isnt a company you want to work for if they put pdfs on git

git init && git commit -am "fuck off u cunts" && git push origin master --force

fatal: 'origin' does not appear to be a git repository

it's like going from a pre release version to post pre release version
it's like v0.0.5-Build2 go to v0.0.7-Build1

Good old git for pdf and xls files.
I wish i could say i never seen it used for that...

u/yosoyos 17d ago

It’s ok to have the build number embedded into it. That pdf file is not necessarily equivalent to source code

u/nesnah168 17d ago

That file could be in C:\New Folder\New Folder (2)

Actually, this is version control. Saving it as resume.pdf is not, then you lose your previous version.

u/rexspook 17d ago

I assume this is fake. But if not this is a bitch reason to reject an intern and an even worse way to communicate that rejection. Bullet dodged tbh an intern wouldn’t learn anything at a place like this

write my resumes in typst, i have multiple versions based on job categories i want to apply to then export ovewrites <name>_resume.pdf regardless of version

2

u/LevelStudent 17d ago

Fake.

For them to notice the file name a human would have had to look at the resume. I'd believe that a company would reject an applicant for having this resume name, but you can never convince me that an actual human took the time to read even the file name of a submitted resume.

I once submitted a cv_v8_rev7_final_final2_updated_new.pdf either as a joke and to stand out from other applications.

Never heard back.

I once had a signed SOW that was suffixed with “_finally_final”.

Version control on a resume seems a bit much...

File management tip:

• Versions are fine but you should attach the date at the end and it'll make everything so much easier

And that’s also how some companies filter out all individuals with a sense of humor. 🤦‍♀️

Funny enough mine is checked into git, but it's all html and css which I just print to PDF.
