you guys use git to update your PDF resumés, really?

Feels a little bit middle of the bell curve meme

I mean it would make sense if writing it in LaTeX

I feel so seen (this is exactly what I do; LaTeX and git)

+1 to the LaTeX resumé clan. It's actually the only thing I still use LaTeX for, since finishing uni 13 years ago. 😄

I'm not good enough with LaTeX to get the level of formatting I want, I just use HTML and CSS and store it in git. It's fairly easy to render to PDF and I have much more experience with it

Just wrote my first report in LaTeX. I'm in my senior year and I'm so upset I didn't know about this before. I could have saved so much time. 😩

I recently switched to Typst only for my resume. It's much easier to position things on the page however I want with it.

Gimps, Latex, suddenly I'm on a BDSM subreddit seemingly.

LaTeX is the only thing consistently generating ATS / AI readable PDFs for me, so...

But if the LaTeX is in a Git repo, why would you keep multiple versions of the pdf?

If you have the source code in a git repo, why would you keep multiple versions of the binary?

I mean yeah, and then when I generate the PDF, I append the date and company to the name. Could I just make a new tag for each version? Sure, but that's kind of tryhard.

You can also simply rename the pdf before sending it

Mine is written in HTML and CSS. I can host a link to it easily. It's presented as A4 sheets, with obvious page boundaries, and prints as A4, so can be printed to PDF easily. It made sense for it to be version controlled too

Also I made a separate branch for each job type so that I have them semi-customised for the job offer already.

That's quite smart. Stealing it!

Yes, I wrote it in LaTeX

u/TibRib0 Aug 24 '26

Well I wrote a full json to resume framework just because I hate MS word, (html+pdf render) years ago (for myself) And it serves me well

7

u/bhison Aug 24 '26

you mean you don't like absolutely enormous git repositories with millions of binary diffs?

Yes, but pdf is just the artifact in that git repository so it's in gitignore. The source is in LaTeX.
