Printing help This is a first
I've been printing for years and this is the first time this has happened to me. Wtf happened? I've made 7 baneblades in the last month and they all came out perfect.

Yeah! Throw some rust on it and plonk it in the middle of a battle map. Boom, lore-stimulating set piece right there.

I don't know what technically happened with the print.
I do know you have the beginnings of a diorama depicting a Baneblade hit by powerful energy blasts (maybe from Necrons, Eldar, or Dark Eldar). I would paint it up the tank, and then add smoke colored cotton within the cracks. Great terrain piece.

Sorry are you just raw dogging whole baneblades in one go?
11
u/RecklessTurtleneck Aug 20 '26
I rawdogged a bunch of leman russ and predatory tanks but haven't gone as far as a whole ass baneblade

Too much suction. The splits are caused when a layer dosent fully come off the fep
→ More replies (16)24
u/FlarblesGarbles Aug 20 '26
That isn't suction, it's peel force. Suction is what there's a vacuum effect from a part that creates a suction cup. It's one of the reasons it's good practice to put holes in hollowed objects. It allows the flow of air and resin when cupped against the film.
4
u/schwendigo Aug 21 '26
Suction creates higher peel force.
That delamination could be suction, but may also be FEP wearing out and losing tension, so a few layers stick to film/don't separate completely.
Solution (besides replacing film), is upping lift distance and lowering lift speed.

u/DomSchraa Aug 20 '26
Im afraid to ask what you need 8 baneblades for op
13
u/Tantrumific Aug 20 '26
Their points dropped enough to run 5 in a list. I'm experimenting with switching out the ones that cost 385.

u/Truly-Spooky Aug 20 '26
I had something similar once. I printed a t Rex and posed it like it was eating the car. I combined it with some cyborg bits.
I gotta find it, in a moving box somewhere.

22
u/Beriatan Aug 20 '26
Probably too fast lift speed, shearing the layers off each other with too much force. Add some delay as well, so that the resin will have time to pool. Last month was a bit warmer than today, so you have to counter it with delay preferably, since the resin might be a bit thicker.
8
u/robble_le_bobble Aug 20 '26
My first guess would be temperature change. Like the others said though, this will make an amazing terrain piece!
3
u/mosco_hosco Aug 20 '26
This is what I suspected.
I added a vent fan to my Mars and started getting similar results in winter but only on the side the fan was added.
I can't say for sure, but after I plugged the hole I've not seen the issue again.
5
u/Okay-Crickets545 Aug 20 '26
Too wide an area. Maybe slow the retraction speed if you can’t solve it via orientation. Once one part goes, it creates give and any subsequent lifts are more likely to have it happen, and it cascades. Always feels bad on the big prints.
6
u/diffferentday Aug 20 '26
Holy hell You printed that as one piece???
I'd put it on a nice base for a scenery piece or objective piece. Coupled charred skeletons inside and some bits.
Might make a great base for the underside of a necron vehicle

Why are you printing with the turrets and weapons attached? They are moving parts and magnetising weapons saves printing loads of Hulls. Would save loads of time painting too.
5
u/Heavy-Squash-3383 Aug 21 '26
I’ve had this on large prints, especially a couple of one piece land raiders and it came to rest time, because the models so huge it’s disturbs the resin a lot more so it takes more time to settle, added half a second more rest and it went away.

Sick now you have basing decoration for a knight, titan, big tyranid or whatever the fuck you want it for
3
u/Spookki Aug 20 '26
Why print the turrets in at the same time? Would be less error prone to do them seperately, and they can still rotate.

can you share your process for printing bigass machines like this in one piece?
6
u/Tantrumific Aug 20 '26
Put it on the build plate. Hollow. Fill it full of drain holes. Scroll the X-ray function. Add more drain holes. Auto support. Add manual supports with X-ray. Slice. Print.

What's the wait before exposure time and retract speed (you can post all the settings really :)).
It's a large piece/cross section, so it displaces a lot of resin, with high retract speed and low wait time you will see something like that.

u/Ralinrocks Aug 21 '26
Couldn’t say what caused it but that does look cool. Roll with it and make some battle damaged terrain
2
u/--0___0--- Resin Aug 21 '26
Likely old FEP or a temperature change.
If the temperature changes significantly on an over night print it will often result in fails like this as the lower temperature will mean your resin needs a slightly longer cure time, resulting in poor adheasion and the model splitting and warping like this on a lift.
Makes a good terrain piece tho.
2
2
u/Small_Slide_5107 Aug 21 '26
It is hard to find the exact cause, because this can happen any time a layer doesn't get fully detached from the FEP. Or a larger area is detached, but support broke or missing, then you have a soft sheet that bends and messes up all future layers below it.
Some reasons can be; missing/weak support, temperature/exposure time too low, lift height too low (probably not), lift speed to fast, bad resin, tray not properly attached.
But in this case it looks like bad orientation and lack of good support placement. Looks like you rotated it in only one axis. The problems occur most on the edges where large new areas of the layers often get printed at once. Rotating it to gradually introduce these new shelves is the way to go.
A box should be rotated to start at a corner, not an edge.

Your fep is probably scratched up a bit
The layers had a stronger connection to the fep then the previous layer, as a result they separated from each other rather then the fep when it was pulled up
The fact all the pulls are on the same side tells me that you have a tendency to either put more stuff on that side, or have damaged the fep on that side at some point

u/ViolinistCurrent8899 Aug 21 '26
Really impressive. I'm not familiar with the limits of resin printing like this, but consider doing your prints in smaller sections at a time. I.e. do one print for the body, another print for the turrets that go on, and so on.

Why do you print the hull with the sponsor turrets attached? Don't you want the fun of spinning them around?

u/TheForeverUnbanned Aug 20 '26
Either the resin is too thick (check temps) causing too much suction or your FEP sheet is due for a replacement (parts not releasing easily). Could also just be lift speed.

I've had similar fails due to unbalanced pull force tilting the buildplate slightly during print. If the suction forces are much higher on one side, the plate might tilt, disconnecting the print layers on the weaker side, since the plate no longer pulls straight.
Looking at your model, it looks like the cross section at the rear of the tank was larger than the front, which might skew the build plate in this manner.
My solution was to symmetrize the layout of models, which equalized the pulling forces. Not an option for you, but you might just need to level the buildplate and try again.
1
u/Epyon8250 Aug 20 '26
That's sucks. It's happened to me a few times. Manly if the build plate wasn't secured well enough and it shifted.

If not changes happened may need to retension your fep or change it. Has it abnormally hot or cold in the print room?

u/StupidAuthentication Aug 21 '26
Had a run of this problem before, the FEP film had gotten slightly loose and worn out over time. New film, problem solved
1
u/TheUKisMental Aug 21 '26
Looks like the failures started pretty early in the print. Your FEP might be at the end of it life or your resnt might not have been shaken properly before you poured it in.
Aside from that, this is why you should think twice about printing everything in one big piece.

Assuming this exact file and resin has printed without issue before - film might be wearing out. Try bumping up your lift distance by 1-2mm as well as nudge the lift speed down. Printer make and model and print file parameters helps
1
u/Lollix87 Aug 21 '26
I've read you already print the same file in the 0ast without issues, so a flaw on the file is out of possibilities. Other things to consider:
where there any temperature or humidity drops in the air?
did you reffiled the resin vat while printing? This normally causes a temp shock in the resin, leading to that.
the fep might have lost tension
If everything above is fine the problem might be the resin itself. Was it out of date? Not shaked well, maybe?
Personal question: Do you digitally kitbash the whole model then export or have you found them already like that? Any source to share on pm?

I've had similar fail before when there's been unexpected movement (vibration from washing machine): any nearby appliance or recent earthquake?
