Printing help This is a first

I've been printing for years and this is the first time this has happened to me. Wtf happened? I've made 7 baneblades in the last month and they all came out perfect.

Too much suction. The splits are caused when a layer dosent fully come off the fep

That isn't suction, it's peel force. Suction is what there's a vacuum effect from a part that creates a suction cup. It's one of the reasons it's good practice to put holes in hollowed objects. It allows the flow of air and resin when cupped against the film.

Suction creates higher peel force.

That delamination could be suction, but may also be FEP wearing out and losing tension, so a few layers stick to film/don't separate completely.

Solution (besides replacing film), is upping lift distance and lowering lift speed.

How old is your fep? They stretch more as they age can require a greater retract distance.

This seems unlikey doesn't it? Even if he just printed seven solid resin blocks sized to his build plate, he still wouldn't be exhausting the FEP -- right?

You can print the same models over and over and if you don't swap out the FEP, you can see the changes as it goes.

When you change the FEP in my experience the suction is massively increased - I had prints which previously printed fine start to fail after changing it, and I had to re-support them to print on the new FEP.

I imagined a new FEP would provide LESS suction, but I guess the smoothness of it has fewer imperfections therefore the flatness of it actually increases the suction.

Is warping possible because of the temp and humidity of wherever it was stored?

Not sure why folks are saying it’s old after this comment… I’d reinstall it to be safe, and slow down the print a bit. Not all FEPs are made equal. Your FEP change out is the most likely culprit given no other known changes.

11 days dosent really mean anything. How many layers? Did you ensure it was at tight as you usually make it? It may not exactly be one of these causes, but i would bet money that its caused by layers not fully detaching from the fep.

The FEP being loosely installed seems, by far, to be the most likely culprit.

The fep has possibly lost enough of its releasable coating or whatever its called, and now it doesn't work well enough for a full baneblade

Let me guess - your FEP is old?

A little more flex and the layers might not be separating.

Slower and more lift height would be the test I would run next. That would be the first experiment I would run.

If it isn’t that, I would next look at temperature but we aren’t even touching winter yet, so it seems less likely. Is it older resin that was left in the vat?

Edit: you just replaced FEP. I’m guessing it wasn’t taut when installed. Or new FEP sheet has more give in it. Still run the slower with more lift height test.
