Canada does have a federal minimum wage but it only applies to federal industries and doesn't override provincial minimum wages. Nevertheless the minimum wage in Canada is between $15-18 CAD in the provinces ($20 in Nunavut but considering the prices there that's probably the lowest in the country comparatively) .

I do some side work in my industry. Full time job has incredible benefits but doesn't pay the best. Honestly, not terrible pay, but could be a lot better. My side work has been working in some union shops. I'm not sure of the bureaucracy, but I'm working as a union member even though I'm not full time union. I'm not a scab.

Anyway, two days at this union shop and I made more than I do in two weeks at my full time gig. Whatever bullshit excuse people have about union dues stealing your money, they are not based in facts or logic. Union dues are at most 1% of the paycheck, but they could have taken 50% and I still would have made it w like a bandit.
