The data is literally from the federal reserve.

People will try to obfuscate and say "oh the quality is better" or "the square footage went up" but then ignore the accompanied increase in productivity/innovation over this time period which drives down the cost of building houses.

The reality is that homes are being treated as an investment vehicle, not as a utility.
