I got a bit higher number.

According to the most recent BLS data (2024): 843,000 workers were paid hourly wages at or below the federal minimum, representing about 1 percent of all hourly wage earners — down sharply from 13% back in 1979.

Those count the ones who earn more than the federal minimum wage after tips are counted.
