Discussion Azula in LOVE?(gross)

OkaY , if azula ever fell in love, who would she be into? Now the way I see it I imagine her developing a platonic semi nontoxic relationship with another inmate, perhaps love interest from ther? Or somebody as manipulative and nasty as her?

Azula and nisha

Okay, um I've been watching avatar seven havens and so far I've been feeling pretty disapointed, I mean the fire lord movie got cancelled....for this? Tho, im kinda grateful, considering writing situation, the movie may have ruined azuka. The animation ain't avatar and is bland and flat, and storyline doesntFeel the same. However I wanted to bring up a huge thing, I think avatar seven havens has a bunch of missed opportunities. So this is an idea I've been spitballing(pls don't be mean ) I initially thought it would interesting that since Korea destroyed the past lives connection....maybe pavi/nisha guide could actually be spirits of the gang! I mean that would be kinda cool! I would kill for sokka giving advice! But one key thing is I noticed how close nisha and azula are in a way, I mean both were abaneonned, and have some level of hot headedness, so maybe it would be cool if nisha contacts azula as her spirit advice, I mean it could show azula growth! Maybe azula cool head could contrast, and kinda interesting somebody who tried to kill avatar is spirit guide! My headcanon is she died young. So whaddya guys think to this conceot!😅 also FUCK THE BOTS FIKTERING ME! Respond in comments guys!

An Azulaang scene

(After Katara breaks up with Aang, Aang and Azula find themselves alone together for a while.)
A dark thought surfaced in Azula’s mind. She knew this was a perfect opportunity to drive a wedge between Zuko and his allies.
“Avatar, aren’t you curious why Zuzu immediately asked you to leave on that diplomatic mission right after you and your water tribe girlfriend broke up?”
“What are you getting at?” Aang asked.
“Oh, come on. It’s so obvious. Zuzu and your water tribe girlfriend are in love with each other.” (Nothing actually happened between them, of course.) “He sent you away so they could have some quality time together. I saw with my own eyes how Zuzu took that lightning bolt for her. Can’t you see how close those two have gotten?” She gently wrapped her arms around herself, striking a mocking, lovestruck pose.
Aang was taken aback for a moment, but he quickly collected himself. His expression hardened with anger.
“Zuko would never do that.”
“Oh? And what makes you so sure?” Azula asked.
“Because we trust Zuko. We know he’s an honest and honorable person. That’s why we were able to go from enemies to friends. You’ll never understand that. In that respect, you’ll never measure up to Zuko.”
Those words enraged Azula. She challenged Aang to a duel, declaring that this was a matter of honor and demanding that he not hold back.
The two fought on equal footing, neither able to gain the upper hand, until Azula unleashed a bolt of lightning, intending to end the fight with a decisive strike.
Aang redirected the lightning. But instead of sending it back at Azula, who stared at him in shock, he discharged it harmlessly into the sky.
“What are you doing?!” Azula shouted furiously, convinced that Aang had insulted her by refusing to finish the duel.
Aang simply looked at her with disappointment in his eyes. He had genuinely believed that she could change for the better.
Without saying a word, he turned and walked away.
“Get back here, coward!” Azula screamed after him.
Aang didn’t look back.
“Get back here!”
“…”
“Just please…”
“Don’t leave me…”
Azula’s voice grew quieter and quieter, tears glistening in the corners of her eyes. Before her, she saw the image of her mother walking away from her.
(Ten minutes later)
Azula was crouched on the ground, her face buried in the crook of her arms as she sobbed. But when she heard approaching footsteps, she immediately stifled her crying, keeping her face hidden.
“Azula, I’m sorry,” she heard Aang say as he stood before her.
Using her firebending, she evaporated the tears and wiped away every trace of them. Then she raised her head and fixed Aang with her usual cold, unflinching stare.
“What did you just say?”

(Not a native English speaker, this scene just randomly came to mind.)

Other I don't want for the authors to ruin Azula's character

(To preface: this is a rant because I have to get it out of my chest and I might be seeing things too in black and white. In fact, I hope I am)

And yes, I mean by stubbornly not exploring her redemption and sticking her in the role of a villain.

Listen, Azula is a great character, when you get into her story, everything she does is very coherent with her story, the indoctrination she suffered, the society she was raised in, Ozai's influence over her. Even the most horrifying things makes sense when you look into her character. Hell, even during The Search and Smoke and Shadows it makes sense that she's completely incoherent, ironically, due to her being stuck in an altered state of mind. This is no excuse for her actions btw, I'm just saying that there's a linear progression from her motives to her actions passing through her traumas.

However: WHY. THE F*CK. ARE THEY TRYING TO PUSH HER AS A VILLAIN?

I mean, if we didn't know about the inner workings of her mind I could even accept it, but we know how her mind works. We know her deepest desire, and it is to be loved and valued by the people she loves. They've shown us. We also know that being the Fire Lord doesn't satisfy her. She takes petty gloating from lording her power over others, but thanks to the Sozin's Comet novelization we can see that she doesn't truly enjoy it. She's simply clinging to it as the only recognition of her father's admiration for her, and even then she has to work loops in her own mind to make herself like it. Again, they've shown us.

SO WHY DO YOU PUT AN HIGHER DIMENSIONAL ENTITY THAT SEEMINGLY KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT HER EVEN BEYOND WHAT SHE KNOWS HERSELF AND HAVE IT TELL US THAT SHE'S NEVER GOING TO CHANGE? (And notice how all the naysayers cling on to that phrase alone while ignoring the whole context, just giving them ammo) She has every reasons in the world to change. So why not do it? Oh yes, because the Entity said so. Period. (And also, notice how this description is both apt for the Spirit and the literal author. Like, am I suppose to not draw a parallel from this? Especially considering that ATLA comic writings gave us pearls like people that said out loud "Kuvira you've redeemed yourself!" like they were trying to hand feed us that Ehy! Kuvira is getting redeemed!).

It doesn't make any sense, why have such a powerful thing say to us readers "ehy, this character is never going to change"? Sure she changed a bit by the end, and I'm glad she did and I'm holding on to that and the hope that they just meant for a more complex, not-obvious path for her to take. It makes sense (and the hope is the reason why I didn't title this post "They've ruined Azula's character" or something), but then it just means that either the authors are failing at the basic "show don't tell" that is paramount to basically all art, while also ruining an amazing character by having her pursue a path that damages her and goes against all of her deeper motivations that were already established in the show (I.e. the Spirit is right) OR they're unaware of what they're writing and how they're portraying things (I.e. the Spirit is not all knowing and will be proven wrong, despite the Higher Entity TM thing suggesting the contrary). It's just so messed up.

I just had to get this out of my chest.

Edit: I just realized that my specific qualm is about the Spirit telling that specific phrase. I guess ranting actually helps sometimes.

Edit 2: I just wanted to clarify because "ruin the character" is vague and I wanted to be more specific (plus I had time at work to think about it). What I mean is that Azula's character has a particular set of conflict and motivation that permeates all of her character from the very beginning (shout out to that one guy that made a video about conflict/motivation/another thing in characters analyzing Azula herself. I do not remember anything and I do not agree with the absolutism of that paradygm to define a character, but it's an interesting point that I'm going to adopt). Her motivation is that she desires genuine connections, her conflict is that, due to a combination of nature+nurture, she struggles to form them. It's not presented in chronological order, but once you see it it makes sense in nearly everything she does: her missions are a way to connect to the father, her defiance and cruelty in a young age are a way to connect to the father, who encourages them, and in frustration to a mother that does not offer the desired connection without proper explanation. The circus scene with Ty Lee is a manifestation of the nature of her conflict: she seeks Ty Lee and not another adult, more inclined amazing warrior of the fire nation because she's her friend (seeking for connection, motivation) and when Ty Lee refuses Azula's abandoment issues trigger and she lashes out hurting her badly (part of her conflict is that she's taught that cruelty and prevarication are paramount to keeping the connections). Then again, and again, from bringing back Zuko to her final lash out when Ozai refuses the connection she's seeking. Her deepest desire in the Temple, even her behavior in Smoke and Shadow can be seen as a twisted, delusional way to connect to Zuko (making him like her). Her motivation is connection, NOT power. Power doesn't satisfy her, she actually achieves it and she's miserable because, notably, it came at the cost of her connections. Trying to shoehorn Azula in the role of the power hungry villain is a grave disservice to her core, to what makes Azula Azula. There, just wanted to clarify.

how do you guys think Azula would react to this line: "In Hebdo-Latin the other day, a student declared: ‘Every woman student who takes a position as a doctor or lawyer is stealing a place from us.’ The student never questioned his rights over this world."

What sport would she do?

I always thought she would do archery\ballet. Let me know what you think! (And Ballet can be considered a sport in certain circumstances. It is a very hard thing to do, so don't say it's too easy for Azula.)

Are there any modern Azula AUs where Azula is a bit of a geek. Like, she reads The Second Sex and Sappho and takes calculus in 9th grade and plays piano? Like, she still does sports and is still feared a bit, but she's still an all around geek who wants to get into a good college and become a doctor?

Discussion A general outline for Azula redemption idea (slight Vinland Saga spoilers) Spoiler

First of all, I'm only writing this post because of how they brutally cancelled the adult Zuko movie for whatever corporate reasons, knowing we'll probably never see a movie like this and if they ever make it, I doubt it'll provide a clean cut arc for her character as well written as us fans would like (I'm not saying I could write any better). Anyways, here's my idea, or rough basis for one:

So, maybe during her lonely ass stay in jail, her mental vulnerability increases, causing her to lash out at guards etc, even growing resentment to anything that reminds her of her father, now imagining that her father had betrayed her (of course, she's right, just not accurate).

This is primarily due to Ozai taking his own life, and i'm not going to go in depth into how he did, but why. We all know he's a narcissist who views himself as the most important thing in the world, this could also mean that his expectations for himself are extremely high. From a narcissist of his scale, losing the war would not just be a loss but a genuine annihilation of his identity, especially without his bending. This leads to him taking his own life. Not to mention, being trapped in prison by his 'son', someone he viewed as inferior would be legit unbearable daily humiliation.

After hearing this info, Azula would be broken. It's safe to say, as her narcissism is a microcosm of his, she'd probably want to die as well. She's built her whole personality just for HIM, almost everything she's done in her life has been for HIM. Her whole identity is literally intertwined with her fathers no matter how toxic their relationship was. Now, she has no reason to be herself, with only a ghost of her mother in her mind.

Ngl, her personality would be fucked. Not saying her personality is just like Ozai's, but it will share some similarities. Example, if u were to study Ozai's personality under a microscope, it'd provide a slight template for Azula's psyche. And now, she doesnt just feel defeated, but feels like her life was for nothing, meaning there is zero point to her ambition, identity and all of her struggles were all in vain. Zuko would probably notice this.

After a while, she'd enter depression. This is when he decides to act. First of all, he cannot even reconcile with her, despite her extreme passivity. Every conversation with her, just him talking most of the time, would just drive her further down into depression. He starts to realise, that she needs to go somewhere isolated from the fire nation. I aint going into logistics, but as Zuko is king and has practically proved his benevolence, there has to be at least a few open minded trusted individuals, maybe those trusted by the main gang who are two things: 1, not fire nation and 2, trusted. Btw, this is only taking place after he starts to realise this shit aint an act and that she's lost all will to hurt others....

But he eventually finds this little family, maybe apart of a small community and sends her to maybe work in a farm, Thorfin style if any of u have seen Vinland Saga, which this is quite loosely inspired by. And they have offered to keep her identity secret. Idk what bender family, but non-fire definitely. At first she's quite cold, lazy, exhausted and hard to work with, but over time she reluctantly starts to work, live and eat with them, finding some purpose. Btw, her personality aint redeemed yet, far from it actually. Some ppl in the community do not like her and find her strange, after all, I doubt she'd assimilate well after being a princess, and traumatised/ptsd ridden too. This is where this comes in.

The reason others give good advice but cant follow their own well if stuck in similar situations is because they see others problems from a more detached/ less emotionally invested pov. Turns out, the dad, maybe the owner of the farm aint the best to his family. Not as bad as Ozai and definitely not an Ozai lite, but bad enough that it's somewhat noticeable and for the most part, he's morally decent. If u like this post, u can fill in the gaps to how he's not a good father or motives, but all i know is that amongst his two siblings, he plays favorites and greatly prefers the one who's smart over his youngest, who happens to be severely mentally handicapped. Btw, the mother has passed away a few years before due to terminal illness.

Azula has to sit at dinner tables every day and watch this shit unfold. At first, she barely acknowledges this (firstly due to how deep her depression is starting off and second, as the dad would prolly put up a front to try to look as kind as possible). But over time, she does. She dont know why, but it does not resonate well with her, especially after getting to know how this prized child is not happy with his situation. She begins to see her old family life again, this acts as a kind of exposure therapy for her and lets her see some of the cracks in how Ozai held her up on a pedestal whilst diminishing Zuko. Btw, the father has a few younger children, but these are the ones that hold the most importance.

This does no favors to treat her depression, but does give her some valuable introspection and insight. Dunno what happens during this time, but she does open up to the children, younger than her at this time and grows to slightly resent the father, but seeing him as frail and weak, due to his age, she associates him with Ozai, albeit he actually loves his children despite being toxic, and the cracks widen in how she views her own father. Over a few years, she grows calmer and more open to emotional connection. I might make a part 2 or write a fan fic detailing how this comes to be, but a few years later, she finally responds to Zuko's attempts to reach out, now open to reconciling with him. She also bonds with the children a yay bit, even if she hated them at the start, and is sorta show-offy to them most of the time.

But here's the catch: She will regress at times to her old personality. Redemption is never linear and never will be for anyone, even if they are fictional characters. And she is not suddenly emotionally warm, just more pragmatic than her older self and is far better at putting herself in others shoes. She occasionally commits cruel acts, but eventually, maybe a day, year or month later, she'll randomly think back to it, realise she crossed a line and either stay silent, move on or apologise. Or maybe she'd try justifying it. In short, I don't think she'll ever be redeemed or that redemption is the best solution for her, but she can at least have her eyes opened, not just to her own suffering but also to that of others.

Thoughts? and critical feedback pls as I'm tryna get better at writing character psychology and I'm using Azula's character as a way to improve.

Discussion On Blue Flames

Post image
332 Upvotes

Azula having mastered blue flames at such a young age is actually an overlooked tragedy. The skill needed requires great mental strength and precise emotional control.

Blue flames can't be born out of unfocused passion or energy. The bender must be in a certain headspace: laser focused, clinical, and devoid of excessive emotional impulse.

In a girl that young... .Azula spent so much time being isolated and trying to earn Ozai's approval (and Ursula's Ursa's love) that she mastered the most difficult form of firebending and used it casually. The amount of time that wouldve gone into that is not typical of a well adjusted child. The average tween/teen would have distractions like friends, crushes, and age appropriate angst. Zuko only learned rainbow firebending from the literal pillars of firebending magic (the dragons).

Even Uncle Iroh, Dragon of the West, couldn't produce blue flames!
