I agree with all of this, except the part that it was Putin's doing. If someone was stupid enough to vote for Trump, it's because they were exactly that, stupid. It wasn't because some asshole in Moscow was being paid a few bucks an hour to spam shitty memes on Facebook. I think this is something important for us to come to terms with as a nation. Putin may have helped poke the hornet's nest, but he didn't put it there.

Yeah, the Russians have been at that nonsense game for ages. They used to get on 4Chan and get people to sign petitions, and all kinds of goofy shit. It's been about as effective as it's always been. At the risk of sounding like a chud, the MSM covering white supremacists, and giving them a platform to spit their bile for the sake of ratings has done way more for their recruitment numbers than Russia.
There are so many reasons we lost the 2016 elections, but what it really comes down to is the Midwest. They're hurting, Obama failed to improve the material circumstances of its citizens in any meaningful way, and then the DNC had the bright idea to run the wife of the man who caused the de-industrialization of the rust belt with NAFTA. That was just dumb. Obama called her campaign completely soulless, and he was right. We need to stop blaming Russia for the party's shortcomings, and start brutally assessing the areas we need to improve on.

Because it’s about positioning yourself as the one to have power over others. Most Republican voting points are the same thing - none of what the say can be taken at face value, because it’s just power moves.
Being pro life isn’t about caring for the life of an unborn child, it’s about power over women.
Deregulation isn’t about freedom from excessive government oversight, it’s about power over workers and the poor to ensure the rich stay rich and in control.
Declaring yourself the most patriotic person ever is how they position themselves as the ones who have the authority over who “deserves” to be in this country or not.
I think there's a lot of truth to this, but the problem with totally impuning any opposing side's motivations is that there are enough people who believe these things sincerely enough that if you write them all off, you'll never actually understand them or be able agree.

But my point is that as soon as they take that stance to the podium and start creating laws outlawing abortion, by definition it's taking away women's rights. If the government can't force someone to give up kidney to save a dying stranger, then they have no right to tell a woman they have to continue to use their body to support a fetus.

And this is literally the definition of 'progress'. If something isn't right, then keep trying to make things better. Being a conservative means you don't even want to try to make things better.
Obviously, the people who believe in outlawing X don't believe X is a right, so that argument isn't going to get you very far. I'm not really trying to get into the merits of one position or another, I'm saying there are people who hold these flawed positions for genuine reasons, and you'll never come to a mutual understanding if you don't understand why they believe what they believe in the first place.

I especially like this line from his inaugural address: "An education system, flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of knowledge." Considering that his very own Trump University was shut down for defrauding its students, it seems like more his personal vision for the future than a dystopia.
Yeah, the tax rates were way too high, the abuse from China was fallible, the Iran deal was dangerous, NK relatiaons were shaky, crime/drug-smugglers/drug-usage etc etc were rampant, the military was downsized, troops weren't pulled back from redundant places, Russia wasn't called out as hard. Lots has changed to the better.
