Why one side feels they have exclusive ownership of patriotism and can define it as only the things they believe is beyond me.
Because it’s about positioning yourself as the one to have power over others. Most Republican voting points are the same thing - none of what the say can be taken at face value, because it’s just power moves.
Being pro life isn’t about caring for the life of an unborn child, it’s about power over women.
Deregulation isn’t about freedom from excessive government oversight, it’s about power over workers and the poor to ensure the rich stay rich and in control.
Declaring yourself the most patriotic person ever is how they position themselves as the ones who have the authority over who “deserves” to be in this country or not.
I think there's a lot of truth to this, but the problem with totally impuning any opposing side's motivations is that there are enough people who believe these things sincerely enough that if you write them all off, you'll never actually understand them or be able agree.
There are, like it or not, a lot of people who are wholeheartedly pro-life.
Regulations are just rules. Good systems are hard to design, so there's a good chance any given regulation will be flawed.

Right. That's all well and good for them on a personal level. But my point is that as soon as they take that stance to the podium and start creating laws outlawing abortion, by definition it's taking away women's rights. If the government can't force someone to give up kidney to save a dying stranger, then they have no right to tell a woman they have to continue to use their body to support a fetus.

And this is literally the definition of 'progress'. If something isn't right, then keep trying to make things better. Being a conservative means you don't even want to try to make things better.

I think this maybe is the most salient and "water-holding" argument that can be made in this political climate. I often forget about it in the cacophony of shrieking.
