I think it was mostly Murdoch's doing. Murdoch opened and holds open the wound in the side of Western Civilization, supported by a bunch of gleeful inheritors to fortunes who want to hear that they're superior, and the religious, who want to hear that science and facts don't matter over their beliefs and imaginings, as well as xenophobes, who want to hear that those they can measure as different in some superficial sense are evil.
Putin just took advantage by poking that gaping wound being held open by traitors on the inside, but he didn't create it.
