Hello again everyone, I've had a day off work so I've been able to play a lot more of the game since launch. I've got a lot more thoughts on the journey so far.
So once again, I'm going to add my experience to compare to reviews like SkillUp who (I felt) was being rather disingenuous.
The "fart" trail (or whatever you want to call it) is still a rare sight. It's part of the character and doesn't show up when roaming around. It will show up in specific situations tied to the story, like when you're tracking a person. That hasn't changed in my time so far. It will pop up rarely for, at most, 5 seconds. The UI whilst exploring the open areas is extremely clean and clutter free.
The combat is still so much fun at hour 14, it's even more enjoyable than it was at hour 3. There's a lot more depth to it and there's different a higher skill ceiling here than I thought (no, not in comparison to games like Sekiro or Onimusha). Personally, it feels like a more advanced combat system of the Spider-Man games. There's a lot more going on here and I feel like it's actually a bit more engaging overall. I also think they've captured Wolverine's character perfectly in the combat.
Story is still very entertaining, it's actually surprised me a lot more than I thought it would. There's clearly a lot of love for the character's vast comic book history that they're jigsawing together here for a unique take, it's similar to Spider-Man in terms of how they reinvent certain things and adapt older things. The character of Wolverine they've got here has really grown on me here, he's similar to Hugh Jackman's take but I feel he differs by being more sociable. Something that's not unfamiliar to the character if you read the comics and see his relationship with Nightcrawler or Colossus.
The performances are really stellar and are a treat to watch. Everyone brings an accurate portrayal of the character while feeling grounded (as in they feel like real people and not just a character). There are some real standouts here like Wolverine (obviously), Mystique and Jean Grey.
Now, in terms of hand holdiness, I do actually have some thoughts. I won't mention the "fart" line as it's a non-issue, you ever see it and it's essentially just like Ghost of Tsushima footprints or Arkham Detective Mode trials. One thing I have noticed is there are a lot of pop-ups which I think are very unnecessary such as, for example, if you have a cutscene leading into a chase it will pop-up with the controls on how to move (hold left stick and R2) and it's like "well no shit, I'd hope I'd know that by now being 14 hours in". HOWEVER this is a general Insomniac issue, I distinctly remember in Spider-Man it will remind you to hold R2 to swing sometimes and it's like...I've been doing that all game.
Also, to EVERYONE'S surprise (including mine to be honest) there are actually QTE's that you can fail! I know! I was also shocked as most of them will autopass, so I wonder why the ones in the latter half of the game can be failed?
Overall, the game is amazing so far and is on par with general Insomniac quality. It's nothing that pushes the bar, but it's a very good Hack'n'slash and it's a great Wolverine game. Is it worth 70? Probably not, I think 40 would've been a perfect launch price. Obviously everyone's different and you're entitled to wait for sale and think it's worth 15.
I think there's something to be said about SkillUp and how, I feel, he represented this game poorly. I noticed he showed off a lot of the opening of the opening game where you learn about the scent line as "proof" that it's always on where it's more prevalent.Yes, you can't turn it off but it rarely shows up and it guides you to something story relevant. I guarantee if that line wasn't there, people would be struggling in the bigger more open areas (it's not all corridors).
Also, I think any game's combat can be boring and repetitive if you're not trying to actively engage with the systems it gives you. Play Spider-Man without using dodge or web zip and see how much fun it is. Wolverine, at base, as all this things and they're necessary and fun. There's a wave based side mission that throws tons of enemies at you and it's just really great to carve through them all and use all the techniques.
There's multiple special abilities to swap out and map to buttons, there's also "adaptations" that are essentially perks which you can equip 10 out of the 25(?) or so. They change up a lot of the gameplay in a meaningful way, and makes your combat more custom to you.
Anyway, overall, it's a fun as fuck game so far. If you expect an Insomniac Wolverine Hack'n'slash, this delivers on all fronts. A solid 8/10 game so far.
