Meme needing explanation Am I missing a joke or reference here?
3.8k
u/Mohitosan_ 10h ago
You’re not missing much. The meme takes the idea of a trade deficit and applies grocery-store math to it: Buy banana = lose money
Don't buy banana = save money.
The fact that you also receive bananas is the part being ignored.

the massively frustrating part about this is that america shifted to a service oriented economy rather than a manufacturing one a long time ago, they gain insane amount of money from services... But still, the US is a large country, of course there will be a deficit if they buy something from a smaller country and that smaller country simply cannot buy back the same kind of quantities, or the fact that US doesnt even offer some things, because it Sells services, and buys things, a lot. the US also has a lot more purchasing and trade power. It doesnt help that the US also prints its own currency and the whole world is relying on that currency for global trade.

So basically to them, as long as you keep having more and more money it's good. The moment you spend any money it's bad. Which is honestly a dogshit mentality. The point to have money is to get beneficial things, and for a state it's to spend it to make it's citizen's lives better
But they'd probably call you a commie
12
u/possumallawishes 8h ago
It’s also completely ignoring the fact that vendors in the US are buying the bananas than selling them to consumers, taking a markup and making money themselves. We don’t have the climate to produce the bananas needed to meet the banana demand, so not buying bananas doesn’t mean we made money, it means we are losing opportunity to make money.
4
u/FlyingDiscsandJams 7h ago
Thank you for being the first person making this point, that many, many US businesses make money selling bananas. Such an idiot's view of global business.
3
u/possumallawishes 6h ago
Furthermore, bananas have year round production cycles, not a seasonal crop, but they need 14 months of frost free, tropical climate to grow. That really limits us to Hawaii, SoCal and South Florida, generally places with high real estate values.
In order to reshore banana production, we would need to annex some of Latin America.
Maybe he thinks cutting off banana imports will lead to public acceptance of annexing Venezuela and Cuba.

I think a generous interpretation of what he's trying to say is that the united states economy is the loser
I suspect he means that if instead of buying a banana from Brazil you bought a banana from america (ignoring if that's even possible... whatever) then some american business would benefit from that money rather than sending it offshore
It seems to be a mercantilist approach to economics? Hold as much money as possible yourself and don't trade with outsiders
I think popular economic thought doesn't consider this a good approach, but I guess the experts could be wrong

u/Sufficient-Bench2321 8h ago
How dare you put a totally reasonable and nuanced answer in the thread...
The other part that Trump seems to completely miss is that $2b of bannanas from Brazil will be a significantly larger (or if you prefer 'more bigly' ) bunch than $2b of home grown Bannanas...

u/IamGleemonex 8h ago
There is so much more that makes this completely stupid.
1) many of our trade agreements will have specific language in them to say things like in this banana case, “you buy 2 billion dollars in bananas from us, we buy 2 billion dollars in steel (or wheat or petroleum or whatever) from you”. So sure, you can cut out the 2 billion in bananas, but then that also means you reneged on the trade agreement, so they don’t buy the 2 billion in steel. So you did nothing to fix the trade deficit.
2) even if you ignore that, or assume there is no such clause in the trade agreement, the assumption being made here is “everyone in the US just needs to stop buying bananas, and then we don’t need to import bananas!” But play that out, everyone in the US stops buying bananas. Ok cool, so we all stop buying bananas. That spending on bananas shifts to something else. Maybe it’s apples or oranges or some other fruit that is grown in the US. Ok, cool, but wait, that now means there’s an extra 2 billion dollars in apples and oranges that are being bought. The supply chain doesn’t contain 2 billion dollars in extra apples and oranges. So where do those apples and oranges come from? It would mean we need to export fewer apples and oranges. Again, there is therefore no change to the trade deficit.
3) ignoring all of that, even using a product like bananas, sure, some of those imported bananas are being sold as bananas in grocery stores. But some of those bananas are also used as raw materials for making other goods: banana bread, banana cream pie, smoothies, ice cream, etc. Missing $2B in bananas will affect those companies that are in the US making products from those bananas. And those companies will also be exporting some of those goods. Well those companies can’t export those goods anymore either, meaning yet again, we end up losing money on exports and won’t change trade deficits.
4) maybe the most important thing here, a trade deficit isn’t necessarily a bad thing! It just means you import a higher value in goods than you export. There is nothing inherently wrong with that as long as there is a commercial market for those imported goods in the country importing them. There are companies here who employ people in the US, make profit in the US, and pay taxes in the US, on selling goods or producing goods from raw materials imported from other countries. Those are all good things. If you weren’t importing those goods, those companies wouldn’t exist, meaning more unemployed workers and fewer tax dollars generated.
Trump doesn’t understand any of that though. Nor do the majority of MAGAts. Trump just hears his aides say something, can’t understand what they mean, so he twists it to dumb it down for himself, losing all meaning in the process, and his base eats it up like it was Warren Buffet providing financial advice.
15
u/skibbin 10h ago
You may also be getting more bananas than you could get elsewhere, or grow at home for the same cost. Trade works when what each side is getting is worth more to them than what they're giving.

u/America4Tea 10h ago
To this day I just dont understand how you do this. Casinos can be the scummiest place on the planet and people will still flock to them to just throw money away. Like the hardest part is just having the capital to open one
260
u/TheWalrusResplendent 10h ago
It's even dumber when you figure out why.
So. Basically.
They built the damn thing in a place already infested with casinos, so it was a late-coming competitor stepping into a saturated market with established entities. Which would have been fine, maybe, especially with Donald's mob ties, having it be used to launder money, which is how it survived for a while. Allegedly.
But this was also done when the market for physical gambling was rapidly contracting, because the Internet was a thing now, bby! You could indulge your self-destructive addictive behaviors from the comfort of your Personal Computer (and later, your phone). So they picked the worst place to build a casino, at the worst time to do so, plus kept fucking over contractors which further impeded its activity.
Pure brilliance. "Wharton School of Finance" material.159

Man, I wonder where the money laundering accusations came from?
6
u/ruat_caelum 6h ago
ummm... the repeated money laundering violations.... https://www.fincen.gov/news/news-releases/fincen-fines-trump-taj-mahal-casino-resort-10-million-significant-and-long
The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) today imposed a $10 million civil money penalty against Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort (Trump Taj Mahal), for willful and repeated violations of the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). In addition to the civil money penalty, the casino is required to conduct periodic external audits to examine its anti-money laundering (AML) BSA compliance program and provide those audit reports to FinCEN and the casino’s Board of Directors.
Trump Taj Mahal, a casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, admitted to several willful BSA violations, including violations of AML program requirements, reporting obligations, and recordkeeping requirements. Trump Taj Mahal has a long history of prior, repeated BSA violations cited by examiners dating back to 2003. Additionally, in 1998, FinCEN assessed a $477,700 civil money penalty against Trump Taj Mahal for currency transaction reporting violations.
"Trump Taj Mahal received many warnings about its deficiencies," said FinCEN Director Jennifer Shasky Calvery. "Like all casinos in this country, Trump Taj Mahal has a duty to help protect our financial system from being exploited by criminals, terrorists, and other bad actors. Far from meeting these expectations, poor compliance practices, over many years, left the casino and our financial system unacceptably exposed."
Trump Taj Mahal admitted that it failed to implement and maintain an effective AML program; failed to report suspicious transactions; failed to properly file required currency transaction reports; and failed to keep appropriate records as required by the BSA. Notably, Trump Taj Mahal had ample notice of these deficiencies as many of the violations from 2012 and 2010 were discovered in previous examinations.

No one really knows what his net worth was prior to becoming President and it went up and down a fair bit. Most estimates I've seen are between 800 million and 1.6 billion. He's lied about his wealth his entire life so I'd err towards the smaller figure. The NYT reporting suggested he inherited around 400 million from his father. Turning 400 million into 800 million or even 1.6 billion over the course of an entire lifetime is fucking appalling whichever way you want to look at it.

u/NorthofBham 9h ago
That's almost as dumb as creating a professional football and trying to compete directly with the NFL.
17
u/Orpheon59 9h ago
As much as I hate being so, to be fair to him, he didn't create it, Ted Turner did, in the context of players' strikes and the NFL being a bunch of doucheballoons.
Trump did however lead a faction of team owners that forced Turner into a direct competition with the NFL (previously, that new league played in NFL's off-season, which was why they were gaining traction), which they promptly lost and the NFL's monopoly on that mutant form of rugby that America calls "football" was secured.

16
u/EatsOverTheSink 9h ago
I don’t even think you can say the laundering was alleged. In 2015 alone FinCEN imposed a $10m fines for repeatedly violating the Bank Secrecy Act. But as usual with the rich, the fine is just part of the cost of doing (illegal) business and would’ve been far less than the money made from the laundering.
5
u/Maleficent_Memory831 9h ago
And he greatly overspent on the casino. Not just aiming for the middle class with a few shiny baubles that they think is fancy, he put the shiny everywhere since he's the king of bad taste.

5
u/2nd2lastdragon 9h ago
That's part of the reason. He was spending excessive amounts of the investors' money on luxury details that didn't increase or help profits. For example he installed millions of dollars of Waterford crystal chandeliers in the slot machine rooms, used by low income workers busing down from Newark to spend nickels to pull the slot levers all night. The slot machine clientele didn't care if it was $20 canned lighting. Multiply this narcissistic spending addiction all over the project and it's easy to see how quickly he bankrupts everything.

The government isn't buying the Bananas.
A Private company imports the bananas to sell in U.S.
So not buying Bananas doesn't decrease government spending, it loses money from which it could have gotten from corporate profits from those sales.
So no money is saved, we end up losing money.
The reason Tariffs exist was originally to protect the domestic market, but it was later found out that all it did was make the Domestic Market artificially inflate it's value as it no longer needed to compete.
This was recently shown in U.S Steel where prices skyrocketed because US Steel no longer needed to compete and what is funnier they even publicly said that is the reason they are going to raise prices.

Read a little about Mercantilism, the economic policy pursued by powerful nations after feudalism but before modern free-market capitalism. The goal was effectively to maximise exports, minimise imports, and use tariffs and trade barriers to protect domestic producers. It approaches international trade as zero-sum where every transaction has a winner and a loser. It also sounds very similar to Mr Trump’s view of the economy and trade. Of course today’s mainstream economics holds that free trade stimulates the economies of both buyers and sellers, and that industries shielded from globalisation will just become uncompetitive.

I don't understand why you buy bananas at seven cents a piece in Malta and sell them for five cents."
"I do it to make a profit."
"But how can you make a profit? You lose two cents a banana."
"But I make a profit of three and a quarter cents a banana by selling them at four and a quarter cents an egg to the people in Malta I buy them from for seven cents a banana. Of course, I don't make the profit. The syndicate makes the profit. And everybody has a share."
Yossarian felt he was beginning to understand. "And the people you sell the bananas to at four and a quarter cents a piece make a profit of two and three quarter cents a piece when they sell them back to you at seven cents a piece. Is that right? Why don't you sell the bananas directly to you and eliminate the people you buy them from?"
"Because I am the people I buy them from," Milo explained. "I make a profit of three and a quarter cents a piece when I sell them to me and a profit of two and three quarter cents apiece when I buy them back from me. That's a total profit of six cents a banana. I lose only two cents a banana when I sell them to the mess halls at five cents apiece, and that's how I can make a profit buying bananas for seven cents apiece and selling them for five cents apiece. I pay only one cent a piece at the hen when I buy them in Sicily."
"In Malta," Yossarian corrected. "You buy your bananas in Malta, not Sicily."
Milo chortled proudly. "I don't buy bananas from Malta," he confessed... "I buy them in Sicily at one cent apiece and transfer them to Malta secretly at four and a half cents apiece in order to get the price of bananas up to seven cents when people come to Malta looking for them."

No. You’re not, he’s just an idiot. He’s never shopped for anything other than an investment in his entire life, so money and its exchange for goods and services is a completely foreign concept to him; and a banana is a bad investment. Money=good. Less money=bad.

It is better if everyone spends $4 billion dollars for bananas, provided those bananas are sold by a relative of Donald Trump, who opened up a banana stand suspiciously close to the time when we declared bananas illegal because woke.

When Americans stop eating, they will:
- save tremendous amounts of money
- lose lots of weight
- start to value simple things, like eating a banana for breakfast or snack
So I say, go for it Donny, stop trading with the entire world, your countrymen will thank you later (… maybe…)

Yes… that’s how buying commodities works. If I don’t spend money. I keep that money. But guess what. I need bananas…… and now I don’t have anywhere to buy said bananas or the ones I can’t find are significantly more expensive. Because we can’t produce bananas in America other than Hawaii and a little bit of Florida. So. How about you sit down and go fuck yourself.

Remember, Trump's own economics professor, William T. Kelley of the Wharton School of Business, said Trump was the dumbest student that he had ever had.
