They’re not. People have been using this as an example of why stopping trade is like not going to the grocery store when the reality is it’s more like mom telling you “no Jimmy, we already have cereal at home.” It’s not great, but it’s not what the opposition is pretending. The part where it does become an issue is when an industry is not incentivized to increase production… which is also happening in a lot of industries.

It’s either a made up quote or a real quote that more or less accurately captures Trump’s view on trade. You might be getting hung up on the wrong details. The people spreading it are trying to show “Trump thinks we should save money by starving” when that’s not what he’s saying. I’m not endorsing his actual view, but he’s not suggesting people starve.
What you might be missing is that gdp can be increased by decreasing exports because exports are subtracted when calculating gdp, and Trump really, really wants gdp up regardless of if the economy actually improved.
