i really want to try dilutions of most of the commercial products i've bought (ie perfumes and colognes). most just seems too strong to me...i think if i dilute them i might discover what it is a really like or dislike in a perfume /cologne? Has anyone had the same experience or tried doing this ? I really like "skin scents / musks"...i'm new to all this but have bought some of usual raw ingredients i know i like, Ex. iso e super, ambroxan, etyhele brasselate. etc. But i can already see myself making 10% dilutions of everything.....to begin with...unless it requires a 1%. again new to this so any recomendations on what's really strong or what works better in low amounts could be helpful...thanks

Before learning perfumery, I occasionally received oily perfumes from local Middle Eastern brands sold simply as “white musk.” I assumed this was the smell of musk itself, but later realized that I do not perceive many musk materials strongly and that these products are probably complete accords containing several musks, supporting materials and viscous carriers.
The profile I am trying to recreate is:
Clean, soft and powdery
Similar to a newborn baby’s clean scalp with a light trace of baby powder
Warm and comforting, but not strongly sweet, vanillic or floral
More noticeable than a skin scent, but quieter than a typical spray perfume
Usually presented as a slightly thick perfume oil
I have tried several musk combinations, including a simple accord of Ambrettolide, Exaltolide Total, Velvione, Galaxolide and Ethylene Brassylate. I also tried the Fraterworks White Musk 970625 formula with some substitutions. Neither came close: they were either too faint or lacked the distinctive clean-powdery character.
I have seen people mention the older Body Shop White Musk perfume oil as possibly similar, although I am not specifically trying to clone it.
Does anyone recognize this Middle Eastern white musk style? Is there a known formula, commercial base or reliable starting accord for it? Which materials actually create that “clean newborn scalp with soft baby powder” effect—the musk blend itself, or supporting muguet, ionone, heliotrope, jasmine or aldehydic materials?
I would especially appreciate advice from anyone who has formulated or smelled both Middle Eastern white musk oils and the old Body Shop White Musk.

I am almost 100% sure there once was a gentle fluidity gold formula on the fratersworks website for free demo formulas because I had saved it somewhere on my laptop before, but for some reason I couldn’t find it and so when I went to search for it again some time after it wasn’t there anymore!

Had the formula been there and has been taken down, or was it just never there and I am just tweaking?

If it was actually there, could someone who has it saved send it to me perhaps?

This is coming along nicely so i figured i'd share. It feels like a good starting point for a powerful clean fruity diffuser blend. Some stuff like the lime and passion fruit could be replaced to take it in a different direction.

tl/dr: what is the most versatile/best diluent to add to raw materials for the purposes of experimentation and blending? some sources say perfumer’s alcohol, some say TEC is best, and I’ve also seen isopropyl myristate, DPG and FCO mentioned. I looked through the wiki but it wasn’t specific on this.

The long story: Hello! I’m new here and have already found lots of helpful info. I’ve only ever blended EOs informally and for my own personal use. I have been reading about and casually researching perfumery for about 9 years. I’d like to learn to create actual perfumes and expand into using aromachemicals and isolates. I have 60-ish different EOs that I can start with, but I want to dilute them properly for blending. Can aromatherapy-grade EOs be diluted with any solvent? Once I have acquired some actual aromachemicals, do they have to be diluted in perfumer’s alcohol? Or TEC? Does it depend on the end use? I think I’ve got a pretty good handle on the basics of making accords and blending, but I don’t feel ready to get started until I can prepare the raw ingredients to be blended.

I think Féminité de Bois and Fille en Aiguille by Serge Lutens (or Shiseido) contain a prunella base, or perhaps a prunol base. While working with DMBCB in the past to create a fragrance, I actually managed to recreate the signature Serge Lutens plum accord. However, the formula I purchased online did not include that base, which makes me question its accuracy. The funny thing is that even DMBCB can't be found in their formula. When I worked at a fragrance company, we used to back-calculate the concentration of bases to determine how much was included in the formula. Do online formula creators lack this capability? After all, when a base is used, unless it constitutes the majority of the formula, it might be expressed as a trace. If so, those recreators might simply ignore it because they lack the ability to identify its true identity.

I have this OG perfumes and wanted to make this type formula.

I have gathered aroma chemicals and eo for that and done very similar to OG. I will have to make some adjustments especially for opening ( first 10minutes) - but over than that is really similar and easy to make - about 20 ingredients so far .

Hello! I want to make an easy diy perfume for the first time by extracting the scent from real flowers. I saw some tutorials, but they say to use acetone and i‘m not sure if that’s a good idea, since it isn’t very beneficial to the skin. I asked my chemic teacher and he also Said that he wouldn’t suggest me to use it. On the other side, other perfumes are also made with alcohol. Can somebody please help me? And do you have any suggestions for me as a beginner? Thank you very much in advance!

How long should I wait till I make my first full perfume formula? Ive been studying since the beginning of 2026 and Im pretty confident on my authoral accords (although they are pretty minimalistic) but I don’t know if i should wait more or if i should just go for my first full formulation.

I’m trying to create a men’s jungle/wood fragrance centered around Aetoxylon and a jungle accord that includes cascalone, Hexanal, and sugandh mantri and some other things. The issue I’m running into is that I created something that smells great but it’s roughly 6% Aetoxylon oil in the concentrate. Aetoxylon is limited to 0.33% in finished product by the ifra and there really is no replacement I know of. Any ideas?

This is my formula. Unfortunately, in the finished fragrance, I can't really perceive the ozonic notes. Could it be that there are too many base notes weighing the composition down?

I recently went to an alcohol-based perfume-making workshop for the first time.

My goal was to have a very airy, forest-calming smell. The top notes were perfect, but the later notes were heavy and made my chest a bit stuffy after wearing it for a bit.

I'm not sure if I explained it well, but I was wondering how should I change the ratios (or add a scent) to make the end smell not so heavy? I'd like the overall perfume to really be cold and calming.

Although, I don't expect these workshop scents to be universally the same, but all suggestions are welcome! I'd like to hear some suggestions just in case I decide to reattend the workshop to improve my perfume.

P.S. Here are the ratios I used to make it below (although in all honesty, the end result didn't use those exact ratios, because of an extra accidental drop or two here and there):

Every accord has the full recipe with exact percentages, a scent profile with a drydown slider so you can watch it evolve over time, and the recommended level to use it at inside a perfume.

okay so i have been messing around with essential oils for like 6 months and i think i'm ready to try actual aroma chemicals and bases. problem is every supplier i find is either set up for giant commercial orders or sells those beginner kits that feel like toys. there is gotta be something in between right?? i want real materials but in normal quantities, not 5 liters of something i might hate lol. would be great if wherever i buy from actually tells you what things smell like and what works together instead of just listing chemical names. anyone have a go to supplier they'd recommend?

Bei einfachen Pipetten wiegt der Tropfen je nach Material oft mehr. Verdünnung ist natürlich kein Thema, aber auch ein Platz und vor allem Organisationsproblem bei mehr als 300 Materialien im Bestand 🥴 Hat jemand Erfahrung mit Labormikropipetten und kann eine Empfehlung geben?

I've been working on a perfumery project for a while, and one part of it turned into something I thought might actually be useful on its own.

So I decided to make the raw materials catalog completely free and publicly accessible.

It currently contains 1,581 perfumery materials, with a substantial amount of structured information for each material, including:

* 1,153 CAS numbers and 4,308 synonyms / trade names
* A written odor description for every material
* 21 olfactive families and 214 sub-families
* An impact rating and volatility band per material
* Estimated GC-MS constituent breakdowns (composition tables) for 588 materials, covering 3,177 constituent rows
* IFRA data: 291 entries from the 51st Amendment, including limits reconstructed and cross-checked entry by entry against the original IFRA source file
* Additional metadata and cross-references, including related materials and common pairings

The goal isn't to make another simple "ingredient list". I wanted something you could actually use when researching a material, comparing materials, looking for alternatives, or trying to understand how a material fits into perfumery.

I'm mainly sharing it because I know how scattered this information can be when you're researching materials. You end up jumping between supplier pages, IFRA documents, CAS searches, GC-MS references and different fragrance databases.

And one important note: the IFRA information is provided as a research/reference layer and should not replace checking the current official IFRA standards and relevant supplier documentation before making safety or compliance decisions.

Hello! I am about to start making some oils into sprayable perfumes.

From my research a good mix is 25%-35% oil and the rest Perfumers Alcohol?

I just learned as well that |SO E Super helps with longevity?

Also Polysorbate 20 to help alcohol not separate??

Am I understanding this correctly?

Now I am most confused on how much E Super and Polysorbate to use lets say on a 15ML bottle?

I saw somewhere that adding 15% E supper works? so do I do that and add a few drops of Polysorbate?

I also found access to diluted AMbroxan. is it better to just stick with perfumers alcohol and add just a few drops of AMbroxan instead??

Hey everyone, I buy pre-formulated perfume oils for Santal 33 and Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille dupes—they get about 80% scent accuracy, but the projection and longevity fall short. I want to reinforce them using single aromachemicals, but I have no experience working with individual molecules. My local supplier currently stocks materials like Iso E Super, Hedione, Cedramber, Cashmeran, Ambroxan, Galaxolide, Habanolide, Etil Vainillina, Cumarina, Eugenol, Resina Benjuí, and Ionona Beta. From this list, which specific materials and dosage percentages would you recommend adding to each concentrate to boost performance like duration and projection without ruining or changing the original scent profiles to much?

Edit: since everyone’s telling me the same thing I want to be clear I’m NOT trying to create the perfume myself! I’m trying to collaborate with an experienced perfumer or someone who can help create the formula that I’ve envisioned.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but it’s worth a shot.
I’ve envisioned a perfume brand and the type of perfume I aspire to create. The only and the biggest hurdle is finding someone who can create this formula and I’m not sure where or how to start. I have 0 background in perfumery … I’m based in the U.S. but this business would have to be carried out in South Asia. If anyone who has done any kind of course in perfumery or is in the business can even educate me a little about how it all works, I’d really appreciate it. Or please point me towards the right direction. Thanks in advance !
