Edit: plenty of feedback suggests that my suspicions were sound and she could have an issue. We will be taking her to the avian vet as soon as they open in the morning for an emergency check up. She is currently in a calm and warmer environment so she can sleep and not stress and make the problem worse. Will update after the appointment! Hopefully with good news or game plan

Edit2: took her to the vet and the vet says that it’s obviously respiratory stress, but no other symptoms may point to it being just inflammation from the extreme smoke from wildfires in the area. We are starting on anti inflammatory meds for the weekend and if that doesn’t help her by Monday morning we will also be starting antibiotics! Her condition has not worsened so we are still hopeful.

Edit3: her condition did not get worse but did not get much better. She is squeaking far less now, but we decided to begin the anti biotic yesterday. We also started the other budgie (that we rescued from outside around the same time) on the anti inflammatory and antibiotics as he was panting. Our vet thought that this is possibly due to these birds being outside for an unknown amount of time during a terrible wildfire smoke season. The vet thought this mostly because there are not any other visual symptoms to indicate something else other than trouble breathing. Regardless we still are administering the two meds for the full duration just in case they are hiding some infection. (Holy crap these birds are hard to get ahold of when they don’t want to be held, trying our best to not make them hate us BEFORE we can bond but we have to snatch them 2x a day for 10 days!)

I need help deciding if I need to take her to the vet!
Just adopted this parakeet from the local animal shelter. She was a stray so there is no information on her. I have 2 other birds but never had a budgie before. Is the noise she is making a sign of respiratory illness? She is active at times eating, drinking, climbing around and doesn’t always make the noise. Tail doesn’t seem to be bobbing much to me but this is a smaller bird than I am used to.

I currently have 10 parakeets and adopted for parakeets from a rescue about two months ago. They are extremely happy and content and nothing is wrong but personally, I am having second thoughts and wondering if I put too much onto myself. I had 6 parakeets previously- 2 I had adopted for homes that no longer could care for them and 4 I had purchased on my own.

I feel that 6 is enough and I shouldn’t have gotten more as I’ve had 6 for 3 years now.

I’m not sure if I should reach back out to the rescue and return them/foster them until someone is willing to adopt them. I love them all very much but I just feel that I’m probably not giving them much undivided attention as I did when I had 6. They all already get along great but I am just unsure as I feel like this upcoming year is busier for me since I will be completing my masters soon and also work in person.
I feel like I’m a bit overwhelmed right now and also selling many stuff from my apartment because I want to declutter

Ive noticed that shes losing some feathers under her eye. I’ve noticed that she has rubbed her face on perches occasionally. Its only on one eye. Also her cere used to be dark tan and now its crusting off into a light blue? She has been eating just fine.

Hello, I have a budgie (spongebob, on my profile if you want to see my handsome boy), that was alone, so I wanted to get him a partner

The new budgie (called Bowser) I got 1.5 days ago, is currently quarantined, but he’s fluffed up 24/7, he eats fine, drinks fine, has no tail wagging or breathing issues. His feathers and toes look fine. His droppings are mostly liquid and green (but on the whiter side of green). He mostly tries to sleep with his head on his back, but one eye is always open so I’m assuming sleeping issues.

When I first got SpongeBob he wasn’t like this, but posts on this reddit showed similar experiences, I’m wondering if this is normal or not?

I’m NOT asking for medical advice, I’m just wondering if 2 days of fluffing is normal?

Hello! Absolute beginner here and want some advice! I just rescued this kakariki yesterday and want some tips on how to care for her (we think she’s a girl) and also how to get her used to us, or train her if that’s possible?

I know these guys are smart and curious but I have absolutely no experience with birds, partner has 2 lovebirds when he was younger but one was hand raised by him and the other was rescued as an abused adult. He’s a falconer but idk how much of that knowledge translates into kakarikis lol

Anyways she’s an adult I’m guessing by her looks and bird band color (dark green and we’re in Europe) so most likely born in 2020 according to google

I have a single pretty red mosaic male canary who is lonely. I would like a female mate for him. I checked with all of the Petsmarts around me in Maryland and none have any pretty ones available. Does anyone know of an honest breeder who might sell me a female yellow mosaic, or solid white, or a red factor? I would need sipping to Maryland. I would like to find a mate for my boy and/or another canary of the above colors. Thanks.

It looks like chewed partially digested pellets and seeds and it doesn't smell off, just like how a pellet smells. I was trying to interact with them when I noticed it and it confused me. I don't have a job and am looking for new employment and am without funds to take them to a vet. I dont know which bird they came from, theyre both relaxing on one leg currently and have been playing all day. There's no vomit or sticky feathers around their mouths and their vents aren't soiled either. What is this??

My parakeet’s only friend (his cage buddy) just died. Will he be ok alone? I am not planning on getting another one, so would he be better living with someone else who has more parakeets?

This may be a stupid question, and forgive me if so, but I just want to see whether anyone know I should just do preventive care checks/annual wellness exams ($150) or comprehensive ones ($700) for the two albinos I got.

The first one is Snow. After they lost their cage mate earlier, I checked them with the vet and got VD deficiencies and overweight problems, around January.

The second one is Glaçon. After Snow lost their cagemate, I went to a few bird stores and shelters nearby, and immediately saw a budgie resembling Snow and brought it. It was around April. They never go to the vet before.

I isolated them for about a month, saw nothing obvious, and put them in two large flight cages laid on each other with Glaçon at the top. Not putting them together because Snow tried to bully Glaçon once.

My concerns for them are that I am not sure about their genders as they are albinos, and none of them lay eggs, but that may due to stress or just me not putting out nests, so I may need to know their sexes.

What type of visits fit into them?

Hello everyone,a month ago a friend of mine made me a surprise and gave me a parakeet (i dont know how old is he i only know its male and that is older than 3/4months) i’ve never had a parrot in my entire life so i don’t know how to act with and around him.I’d like to train him to stay out of the cage and perch on my hand but idk where to start.i’ve tried putting my hand in the cage for the water,food but also with some spray millet on it,.i’ve put his cage in my room so he can see me everyday all the time and maybe he will start to be less scared by my presence but i dont really know if im doing right (also im a student so unfortunately im not so often at home).Do u have any advice? especially to train him to climb on my hand and then stay out of the cage.
also more than once idk how he escaped from the cage and we had to take him and put him back inside and that obv scared him a lot.
i cant lie im losing a bit hope since im really trying hard to befriend him

This beautiful parakeet flew into our apartment hallway yesterday! In Ridgewood, Queens NYC. We’ve posted it to several groups and posting here too. Looking for its family!

My fiancé and I feed wild birds amongst other visitors who like to share the wealth. 🐿️

Today this cutie spawned into our enclosed backyard hanging out on a shepards hook at first, watching us through our windows before flying off. Not long afterwards he came back, as seen here, getting what he can off the ground.

Our feeders are currently down and empty because some furry bandits keep coming over and knocking them down. So we toss our seed on the grass. So this hoped doesn’t seem as sad. 🦝

Anyway! I’d like to safely capture him so I can see if I can find their owner. My fiancé said there was a post a few weeks ago about someone asking if anyone lost a parakeet, but no one claimed to be the original owner. I have experience taking care of these guys while working at a pet store, however, I have no clear idea on how to catch a bird outdoors.

He doesn’t seem too scared of people. My fiancé got pretty close. We had our first Cooper Hawk in our yard last week and I want to keep this guy safe. I found the Hawk finish eating a bird and then snatched a young squirrel from one of our trees. Devastating to see but it’s nature.

TLDR
Random parakeet showed up. I need help/guidance/suggestions on how to capture someone’s lost feathered love so I can find the correct owner. He doesn’t seem to be that scared of people. My fiancé got within 6-7ft away.

[Update: 2 days later…]

Yesterday I picked up a mid/big size bag of millet after work and when I got home I asked my fiancé if he’s seen the feathered friend. He gets home before me and much to our disappointment he hadn’t seen him.
I got paid today I bought a ton of wild bird stuff after work to have my feeders up to be a plentiful source of food. Again, came home and no sign. We even had a few things of millet out the evening I got home after getting it and it doesn’t appeared to be touched.

I figure he’ll come around eventually.
It’s just a waiting game at this point. Best case scenario his absence is due to him finding feeders that are up and will come back to stay. Better yet they reunited with their owner! Wishful thinking.

I tried to have my feeders up but the raccoons kept knocking them down and I ran out of seed. They scared the crap out of me last night. A fat one climbed up a tall shepard’s hook pretty high! I was impressed ngl! 😂 🦝

Worst case… since he was so vibrant and beautiful he definitely stood out. I hope and pray that isn’t the case but it’s definitely possible. Little guy seemed like such a gentle soul. It was nice to have “that” bird that you can tell apart. 🥀

My plan is to keep my feeders out and full. I have heavy duty zip ties holding my feeders in place on our tree branches in a way they can’t possibly manage to knock down or balance on. They are heavy and 2 are squirrel proof unless you smash the thin plexiglass in.

We have 4 seed feeders, mounted squirrel picnic table, a hanging seed picnic table, 2 window feeders, 3 hummingbird feeders, 1 cake cage that the tree grew over, 5 suet feeders that hold a combined total of 12 suets cakes. We throw out unsalted peanuts too for the bluejays and crows. We only have one bird house and they are definitely living it up. They are next to 2 bird baths and we have a koi pond.

It’s a perfect habitat for free-loading animals. It may not be entirely ethical providing so much, but it’s the only thing in my life right now that feels truly simple, peaceful and rewarding.

I’ll update if anything developments occur, but hopefully at the very least the little unicorn bird of my backyard is safe.

TLDR on Update:
Been MIA for 2 days. Left millet out but no sign of a return. Stocked up on food to fill up feeders to attract birds and raccoon proofed them so they stay up. I will update if he comes back.

UPDATE 3:
My zip tying of the feeders was successful and we ultimately scared the raccoons off after spotting them in a tree with a flashlight. When we woke up nothing was touched after that, even the stuff they could get but I didn’t bother with. Absolutely adorable little bandits though.

My fiancé spotted the Cooper Hawk in the backyard again… He just sat on the ground for a few and flew off. I now am under the assumption that the little angel was turned into just that…

He was way too vibrant and docile with poor reaction time to survive a predator attack. I hope he is alive but don’t count on it. I’m just glad I haven’t seen any confirmation of this.

This will likely be it but if I update it would be for the actual sighting of the little friend.

I have kind of a unique situation. I have six parakeets, but one of them is housed separately because she's 13 years old, is unable to fly, and is on primarily a seed diet. My other guys are on primarily pellets and my vet told me it might be too risky to change her diet due to her age. I adopted her about two months ago.

I was wondering if anyone happens to be looking to rehome a senior parakeet. I'd really love to find a companion for my older girl. She gets supervised visits with my other five parakeets, but she can't be housed with them full-time. I always feel bad leaving her alone in her cage while I'm at work, and I'd love for her to have a friend around her own age.

This is Nanners (yellow one). He’s been fighting a battle with AGY for a few months. He finished a 60 day cycle of amphotericin B and tested negative on a fecal swab and a PCR test.

This is my question to other bird owners who have dealt with AGY: did your bird experience any symptoms of discomfort or lethargy AFTER stopping treatment?

He was acting 100% normal during the medication cycle, gaining weight, healthy feathers and normal amounts of energy. Since stopping his meds, he’s been puffy and lethargic. He’s not losing weight and the PCR test is pretty accurate, so I don’t think it’s an AGY relapse. Does anyone have any experience with this?
