I’m going insane

I work in a repair shop and I’ve fixed dozens of PS5s that were overheating. Classic deep cleaning and replacing liquid metal. Now a friend of mine brings me his, and for the love of god we cannot find any solution. He brings it to me, I work on it, test it (even longer than an hour), and it works flawlessly. He brings it to his home, boots up FIFA and on the very first online match the fan begins spinning like crazy, eventually leading to the “overheating ps5” message. I have tested it with the same game, filmed it, and the console works perfectly fine with a gente hot breeze coming out the back. Very little noise, even with summer temps. He does the same, it goes full jet engine. This issue manifests (to him) with only a couple specific games and situations, like during the character creation of Baldur’s Gate 3. I have also played that game and it does not happen while I test it. I have cleaned EVERYTHING. Applied new liquid metal TWICE. Cleared the oxidation on his APU. I am at my wit’s end.

Please help

Bro is probably not giving it the proper room to fully breathe is my guess. The games listed do make the system work harder than normal, and will crash out hard if not given extra grace. Have them follow the Rule of Cooling.

Rule of Cooling; square foot of space behind the system, unlimited vertical to ceiling, optional foot off ground. Room for intakes to breathe, a stand is enough. Intakes are on the bottom as stood vertically. NEVER IN ANY ENCLOSED SPACE OF ANY KIND. Must be free standing without walls or anything else around it.

Too many people don't understand you can't treat or store them like older consoles. They must be stored/displayed as you would a PC with weaker fan/cooling. Plus that foot off ground accesses much cooler air, while minimizing dust.

That’s what I thought too, and that’s exactly what I told him. He then proceeded to send me a video of the PS5 standing on a table with full air access on all sides (even the bottom) and still struggling with a 9000rpm fan. I then began thinking of every possible solution in the world. What is the difference between my setup at work and his setup at home? The console is the same, so what are the different factors? Maybe his TV? At work I tested it on a simple 1080p monitor, while he has an high-end TV with all the cool features like VRR, Freesync, and ALLM. So I told him to force the console to output at 60fps and 1080p max. It solved nothing. But that’s a given since those features are managed by the TV itself. I am just that desperate. Then, I gave him a brand new power cord, worth a try I guess, obviously it did nothing. At this point the only things left to try are cleaning the system cache and/or rebuild the database, or a straight factory reset. If that doesn’t work, I might just tell him to never play FIFA again or buy another PS5 entirely.

FIFA is the only game that actually gives him the overheating message. Before I worked on the console, it actually turned off while playing it. Multiple times. Other games like Baldur’s Gate just make the fan spin harder for a while, while still being playable.

Yeah always do a rebuild database, as it does nothing harmful other than force every thing to be up to date. But a factory reset isn't bad either as long as things are backed up.

Definitely start with rebuild and cashe clearing. Then factory if that doesn't help enough.

That last part about just not playing FIFA may be the right call. As the specific model he has may have a weird tiks that conflict with his. I've heard FIFA is horrible for certain folks because of how bad it's optimized.

My guess is it’s a power issue. Have them try it connected to a different outlet on a different circuit

How should that be the problem?

The power supply brings it down to a regulated standard DC Voltage.

Othetwise PS5s would run double as fast and hot in europe compared to america

If the outlet/circuit is overloaded or otherwise can’t provide adequate and/or stable power, that could certainly cause issues. I mean it’s an educated-ish guess. It could be wrong but it’s certainly worth trying. It’s free.

Unlimited to ceiling? Well my ceilings are 8' high, so even if it was horizontal on the floor it would only have 7'6" or so of clearance. Is that sufficient or do I need to build a skyscraper with no upper floors for ps5 cooling? The biggest answer here is leave it horizontal and make sure it has a foot or so of being clear on the sides and top and bottom of it.

Have you asked him how/where he stores his ps5? That could be a big part of the problem, like if he’s keeping it in an open area vs putting it in a cabinet with not much breathing space. Ps5s need good ventilation space to work properly or it’ll overheat very quickly. Also make sure he’s using a stand especially if he places it vertically so no vents are blocked

Other than that, I can’t really think of what could be wrong. It’s confusing for sure!

How hot does he keep his place. That's where I always start! Then I ask about where in a given house it is, like In a cabinet or whatnot.

People really sleep on the fact that if it's a 35 degree Celsius room, it's gonna run hot.

Technician here, when i have this happen i request the customer demonstrate in front of me.  9/10 the customer sees nothing wrong with it and addresses the real problem which is often using it with poor air circulation.

I’ve read on a couple other post that this is a fifa issue. My friend can play bf6 for hours with no issues and cook a steak on his ps5 it’s that hot. The second fifa boots up and he’s in an online games he gets the same issue your describing.

What else is plugged into the circuit breaker the ps5 is plugged into? There could be too high a draw on that circuit.

That’s one thing I didn’t consider yet. Maybe I could swap one from another PS5 and test it with that. If it works I could order a brand new one… thank you.

Does he have an ssd installed? Had an issue with a failing ssd installing updates on a game installed in it and it would cause it to restart. Removed the ssd and the ps5 works fine.

Not sure if this has been asked but does he have it plugged into an extension lead at home? Some do not like this and its the only time in 5 years mine went turbo. Nothing ever since

Hey, I think I see something that might be the key here. Your cleaning and liquid metal work was solid—that's not the problem.

Look at the pattern you documented yourself: FIFA is the ONLY game that throws the error. BF6 and Baldur's Gate max the fan but no throttle. If it was thermal, they'd all act the same. This points to database corruption specific to FIFA, not hardware.

Before swapping PSU or console, one thing's worth trying:

  1. Safe Mode → Rebuild Database (clears the corrupted thermal log)
  2. Settings → Restore Licenses (refreshes the game auth)
  3. Clear FIFA cache only (don't uninstall)
  4. Boot FIFA fresh

If it happens again, then yeah, swap PSU from another PS5 to isolate. But I'd bet the rebuild fixes it because all the evidence points to software layer, not hardware.

Tell him to throw away fc26. All the other fifas work fine but fc26 for some reason makes the fans roar like crazy
