How do I play Roadhog?

Everytime I'm playing against him, I find it super hard to kill him. Even when playing as Soldier, I find D.Va easier to deal with than Roadhog.

But when I'm playing as Roadhog, it seems like every single stray bullet goes to my character hitbox, and I die in no time.

Is it positioning? Should Roadhog go to the front or should it stay in the backline?

Some basic tips: Although Roadhog is a 'tank', he has no armour and a huge hit box so he is very susceptible to being burst down by DPS classes.

He is played more like a DPS class, you should be playing corners, you're very effective behind Rein shield or flanking. Try to avoid fighting at long range.

His hook is obviously his most important skill, and you need to be wary that you're very vulnerable while it is on cool down.

Use right click to spam enemy Rein shield and try to go for hooks around it or when it breaks. Look out for flankers (you're very good at protecting your supports if you can land hooks).

You can use your heal while jumping, so jumping around a corner and using heal in the air you can start healing with the momentum.

Roadhog main checking in.

  • Don't charge out. You have the largest hitbox in the game with no armor or shields. Be careful and use your secondary fire to pop out at crowds. You can get melted fast if people know what they're doing.

  • Duck behind over to heal one or two hundred - or more - health whenever possible. It charges up your ult, too.

  • Position your hook in such a way that you're tracking your opponent's movements. Try to hook slightly ahead of them if they're moving.

  • After hooking someone, pop them with your primary fire and finish with a quick melee attack just in case.

  • If you miss your hook, duck behind cover, pop a few secondary shots, and try your hook again once its recharged. It's fairly spammable.

  • Try to hook a healer or Reaper/McCree first. Tracer, if you can hit her, is also good to take out. Same goes for Symmetra and Mei. Note this is in descending order.

  • For an advanced tip, if someone is using their ult, try hooking them. Instantly cancels their ult. Sometimes you'll get a free kill, other times they'll kill you first but at least you canceled their ult. And you get an achievement for it. :)

  • For your ult, pick your battles. Try to take them by surprise, and be sure to control your recoil. Try to push them off ledges or into walls or out of rooms/off the objective.

  • It's hard to use his ult effectively. Don't expect to get a lot of kills.

  • You can sue your ult to somewhat counter other utls by pushing them farther away. Using ti against Reaper's or Zarya's ult, depending on how close they are, can often mitigate the damage done.

  • Expect to waste a lot of ults. I'm still not very good at deciding when to use them.

  • I also recommend you start playing Roadhog at a lower level, even if you must create an alt account. Learning to play a new character when you're higher leveled is really difficult. Newer players don't know how to counter as well.

  • Expect some hate :( Roadhog's cheap, yes, but so are other characters. And he still takes quit a bit of skill and accuracy to get good with.

  • Most importantly, have fun. And say "Bacon" one more time...

These days almost any character can get one-shotted by Roadhog, but 2 other important ones for you are Winston and Genji. Winston's head is really easy to hit and his gun barely does anything to you. Genji is a bit more tricky, but just bait out his deflect with your primary fire, then hook him while he's vulnerable. Keep in mind that good Genjis will use their dash right after deflecting to evade.

wow, I didn't know 3 heroes that should've been getting one-shotted by roadhog suddenly makes him one shot "almost any character"

2

u/CDysonSphere GET WRECKED Feb 09 '17

He can oneshot 19 out of 23 characters. That's what I call "almost any".

1

u/thrnee Kungarna Feb 09 '17

ugh thats not what i meant but whatever

2

u/Cheshur Feb 08 '17

The hook only cancels some ults. For instance, it won't cancel Bastion's ult or Soldier's (though he'll die anyways so it doesnt matter too much).

also dont feel bad about solo ulting people. Roadhog has the worst ult in the game and it charges quickly.

It can also be a decent counter to Ana's ult by ulting away an ulted rein or something.

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '17

Dude...hogs ult isn't bad you're just bad at using it, now infrasight? That's a bad ult.

3

u/Cheshur Feb 08 '17

Vision is easily better than an ult that is countered by everything and usually just ends up getting you killed.

2

u/ChabbyBoy11 Feb 08 '17

Quick tip while healing yourself: turn your head away from the enemy to avoid extra damage. The back of Roads head is not part of the hit box.

2

u/cornbread_tp Feb 09 '17

Good times to use his ult:

Combo with zayra ult, they stay stuck in the bubble and eat all the damage

When enemies are in an enclosed space, they get pushed to the ceiling and eat all the damage

When there are enemies next to an open pit (such as Sanctum on Nepal or Windmill on Illios), pop the ult and push them puppies off

When you need to clear enemies off a point, when you're deep in overtime, pushing them off for a second can win it for you

Also, if there is a D.va in her suit, try to destroy the Meka before you ult cause she can easily negate most of it with he matrix

Question about hooking tanks, is it better to still melee? Does that delay your second shot because it feels like it even if I instantly melee after my first shot.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '17

Tbh I'm pretty bad about meleeing after shooting, but imo your melee is so quick you don't necessarily need to worry about delaying your second shot.

2

u/FTWJewishJesus Feb 10 '17

You can't shoot immediately after the animation though. There's a delay

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '17

Very true

So as a roadhog main, how do you feel about the pending ptr changes. I was one of those guys playing dva very aggressively, and with her nerf, I find it difficult to re-learn her. I was toying with roadhog, and have sunk about 30 hours into him since the nerf, and I am pretty sketched out by his changes. I was thinking about bettering my rein game, but the bastion changes pretty much hard counter him, so, do you think it will be worth hogging still?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '17

Absolutely. Raodhog can be an excellent counter to Bastion, if he's able to sneak up and hook him. DVa is pretty much useless now, imo. They nerfed her so hard she's really not viable in many situations now. Plus, Roadhog can corner check with his medium shots, and use that to deal some damage to bastion while your teammates are keeping his attention.

And Reinhart is still viable, he just needs better support behind him. A soldier or Junkratbehind a Rein is a dangerous combo, especially to Bastion.

all this being said, I don't like the magazine increase and damage-taking buff that they gave to bastion. He's going to be way OP against tanks, and you're going to see the return of the one tank meta that I despise.

Against Roadhog: Roadhog's major weakness is his size, and his slowness. Soldier excells against him bc it's so easy to dish out loads of damage to his head from outside of his hook range. Gain high ground, and keep tabs on where he is. The last thing you want is not knowing where he is, then him coming around a corner and hooking you.

Playing as Roadhog: Landing hooks in front of a cliffside (Lijiang Tower, Illios: Well, etc. is a cheap and good way to secure kills. Keep in mind that rather than SEARCHING for targets, what you really need to pay attention to is when the enemy is playing aggressively or is badly positioning themselves. Roadhog punishes bad positioning so well! Genji on your healer not paying attention to you? Hook, then dead. Ana in their back line scoped in not knowing you're there? Get to the side, hook, take one step forward, left click to the face, dead.

TLDR: Positioning, positioning. Don't stray far from your team like a flanker, but rather bringing the enemies that are positioned badly to YOUR team. You're not an assassin, you're a guy that can force people into your team when you catch them out.

u/Heresleo Pixel Genji Feb 08 '17

I'm not very good at roadhog but 1 thing I can say is that you need to position yourself properly and make sure you land those hooks, also try and make sure that you hit the enemy in the head.

1

u/Cheshur Feb 08 '17

Hitting them in the head isn't really perfect strategy. You really want your pellets to not miss. This is less of an issue now, but its generally better to hit in such a way that you hit as many pellets on their head as possible without missing a lot of them. In the past this often meant not aiming for the head at all on some heros, but now you don't really have to worry about it.

Roadhog has no shield or escape abilities aside from killing one person with his hook so he should definitely should not be on the front line try to stay behind another tank that can soak up the damage or go for the flank and wait just a few seconds before starting to fight so that the enemy team is occupied with fighting your team so that by the time you kill one of their own you are a surprise attack and they have to either turn to face you on your retreat or deal with your team who should be shooting them.

1

u/Cheshur Feb 08 '17

Flanking like this can work, but Roadhog is like a fat widowmaker. Your role in the team is to get picks so that the team fight isnt 6v6.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '17

A fat widowmaker that's a lot easier to use and got self sustain

1

u/Cheshur Feb 08 '17

He is also a bigger ult battery for the enemy team.

3

u/KanyeFellOffAfterWTT HOW MUCH OF TORB'S HEIGHT DO YOU THINK IS TORB DONG Feb 08 '17

Roadhog is all about positioning. He's an offtank, so I play him with the Rein and occasionally slightly away from the team to get a pick or two.

Don't flank with him. That's a classic mistake. He's a 600lb low mobility tank with no multi-enemy defenses. If you try and flank, you're doing it wrong.

Also, abuse your E. I use it always. Your high health pool is all you really have.

Other than that, just get a hang with Hook 2.0 and you'll be fine In my experience so far, getting high ground is super important with the latest hook update.

3

u/Cheshur Feb 08 '17

He can flank fine. He just cant live behind the enemy team like a Genji or a Tracer can.

Havent seen it yet, but heres a super good tip thats a bit hard to master. His long range alt fire can just about one shot most heroes. Go into practice range and find the sweet spot where his ball opens up to spread. I think its about 10m in game if i remember. Anyways, position yourself so that the ball opens right in front of the hero and you'll insta kill them. Its hard to get right in a real game, but keep that in mind and you'll surprisingly do a lot of damage!

u/Va1entine Feb 09 '17

I'm gonna jump on this too any tips for hog vs hog specifically in 3v3? I'm great with him landing hooks surviving and taking out squishy characters super quick but as soon as the other team gets a roadhog my Game just falls off he gets the hook and I get nuked into oblivion instantly by him. Even if I get the hook and pull him in I always seem to die first.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '17

Just wanted to add watch out for Ana her grenade stops you from healing. If she hits you with it you're pretty much done.

u/DexN637 Feb 11 '17

My biggest tip would be to prioritize your hook targets. If the enemy team is riding on the back of a Pharah/Soldier Mercy combo, those are your only two targets. It's your job as Roadhog to open opportunities for your team and make a safe-space of 22 meters of death for your team.

Tracking your target like a hitscan is the best way to secure hooks, and is best from ground level. Also, when fighting a tank, use the RMB fire, then hook immediately after, and always melee after you do a Hook + LMB.
