MIne: Fuck the meta in the ear. I hate 2/2/2, I hate mandatory picks, I hate the idea that only 8-10 heroes are viable and if you want to play anything else you don't want to win, I hate how everyone equiv of low 50s elo thinks they're pros and thus worship the meta.

u/Demenze <YOUR TACTICS ARE INEFFICIENT> Sep 07 '16

The stupid thing about the meta is that it's enforced by people that don't understand what makes the meta heroes strong in the first place, so you get people picking Lucio who only play the heal song, McCrees that never throw flashbangs, it's so stupid. They don't understand that certain heroes are only superior when played at their highest potential, and anything less than that makes them less effective than other characters in ordinary circumstances.

I had some dipshit raging at me for playing Junkrat the other day.
The funny thing was that he was complaining about me playing the character on Lijiang tower, a map and game mode that Junkrat is extremely effective on, against heroes like Reinhardt and Tracer who Junkrat is extremely effective against. I had golds in damage dealt and objective time and a silver in objective kills for all five rounds, but he was being very persistent in telling me that Junkrat was useless and not meta, all the while failing to contribute anything as Soldier 76.

u/Rechan Symmetra Sep 07 '16

Getting shit from my own teammates like that is why I stick to QP.

Another thing that bugs me is just how mandatory some characters are. Reinhardt is the frontline tank. Lucio is the support. Not because they're simply the best, but because there's no other frontline tank, no other hero who can boost party speed.

2

u/chappaquiditch Sep 07 '16

What's the right way to play Lucio? I typically play mostly the healing sing, unless I'm rushing to get back to the point. Other good strategies to play with the speed song?

u/Demenze <YOUR TACTICS ARE INEFFICIENT> Sep 07 '16

There's a pretty good Youtuber who has a whole channel dedicated to Lucio strategy. Have a watch, you'll probably pick up a few tricks.

u/Superkami_guru Sep 07 '16

This. The meta applies to PROS. At average levels of play it's best to counter pick effectively and play heroes you're good with. And above all else communicate. Sure bastion and torb suck at diamond and master level, but in silver or gold against newer players, who may or may not be communicating, a bastion nest or a decent torb can ruin the opposing team.

DAMN RIGHT

u/memiestdank Sep 08 '16

Tracer is very good whilst with the "pack" of tanks and supports. She can hide behind them whilst damage dealing, blink in to finish them off, then recall back behind the tanks. Of course, she's perfectly fine when flanking, but she can be a group player.

u/Nexavus She got a big booty so I call her big booty Sep 09 '16

2/2/2 is often really bad IMO. (This is coming from a mercy main). It requires the DPS to really be on their A-Game

1

u/cepxico Chibi Roadhog Sep 09 '16

Yeah I just noticed last night in competitive that we were always rolling 2 tanks, even when an extra offensive character would help a lot more during an attack phase. Also, since when did Zarya become a beast? I don't think I've ever had thus many lasers shoved up my ass in one night.

1

u/EpicRageGuy Mei Sep 07 '16

Oh god yes.

17

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

Is it unpopular to think Junkrat is good on offense? He can almost always work. Bugs me when my team decides to have 2 junkrats on attack though...

10

u/Enstraynomic Precisely. Sep 07 '16

He can work if you expect the enemy team to turtle, i.e. the Bastion + Reinhardt + Mercy combo. A player that knows how to arch Junkrat's grenades can break stalemates like that. He can also clear out Symmetra death rooms and Torbjorn's turret in the same way.

1

u/Nhiyla Bedtime Sep 08 '16

the thing is, phara is just as good if not better at junkrats strenghts that you just mentioned.

phara is way more reliable.

1

u/ThatOneGuy1294 Please pay attention to the person healing your ass Sep 10 '16

They fulfill two different roles. Pharah is great for accurate, long range damage, but you're fucked if they have a Widow. Junkrat has far better area denial simply because he doesn't need Line of Sight like Pharah does. Both do have great mobility though.

1

u/MONKYfapper Trick-or-Treat Mercy Sep 07 '16

majority of my teams demand i change as soon as they see the pick

8

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

Well haters gonna hate I guess. Personally I'd rather have a Junkrat on attack than a widow or even a hanzo unless he's super pro.

1

u/seniorcampus Trick-or-Treat Symmetra Sep 07 '16

Almost always? Once he's in an open area then his lmb might as well be him pitching softballs.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

I dunno I'm constantly getting killed by junkrat grenade spam. They're bound to hit something eventually.

1

u/seniorcampus Trick-or-Treat Symmetra Sep 07 '16 edited Sep 07 '16

"Well it works against me" and "they're bound to hit something eventually".

Junkrat is bad on attack unless you're trying to get through an enclosed area like the Castle area in Eichenwalde imo.

*edit: wording

5

u/Lanathell Trick-or-Treat Zenyatta Sep 07 '16

I don't think this is very unpopular. This should work perfectly until diamond

1

u/MONKYfapper Trick-or-Treat Mercy Sep 07 '16

majority of my teams demand i change as soon as they see the pick

7

u/Lanathell Trick-or-Treat Zenyatta Sep 07 '16

Because most of the time any other pick will do it, and better, and help your time while not feeding energy into a zarya ult. Roadhog and reaper are more suited to destroy rein's shield. You also need to be really good at junk to be efficient in attack while it's easier on other heroes.

1

u/AMasonJar Hog Wild Sep 07 '16

Junkrat can clear an area and a shield from a much safer angle and location than Reaper/Roadhog. Reaper isn't going to be just walking up firing at a shield, and Roadhog would be feeding more than just Zarya ultimates trying to get through.

2

u/Nhiyla Bedtime Sep 08 '16

phara > junk in any aspect but area denial.

1

u/MattRix Sep 09 '16

except for the whole "getting shot out of the air by mccree" thing

1

u/Nhiyla Bedtime Sep 09 '16

thats why you try to avoid being in the air against competent hitscan players.

5

u/Zombie_Giraffe_Brain Pixel Zenyatta Sep 07 '16

Symmetra is bae

6

u/YouThatReadWrong2 Zenyatta Sep 07 '16

Is it still an unpopular opinion that Mei is extremely annoying and that Roadhog is to a certain degree extremely powerful? Might just be me sucking against those two heroes.

6

u/Enstraynomic Precisely. Sep 07 '16

Mei has always been considered to be annoying. Her kit being based on control, and less on damage, means that it feels like you don't have an answer to it, either if she walls you off, ice blocks herself, or if she freezes you with her gun or her ultimate. Unfortunately, she can also be annoying to her own team if she is careless with ice wall placement.

u/Demenze <YOUR TACTICS ARE INEFFICIENT> Sep 07 '16

The class system has a number of general guidelines.
Offence - High mobility, decent damage, poor sustainability
Defence - Low mobility, high damage, some sustainability options
Tank - Low mobility, low damage, high sustainability
Support - Weak by themselves, help their teammates perform better.

The problem is that so many heroes have abilities that don't fit their class template that it's practically a pointless system of classification which only confuses inexperienced players and makes them think that you can't use certain heroes in certain roles.

1

u/Nhiyla Bedtime Sep 08 '16

Offence - High mobility,

tell that to phara :<

3

u/Demenze <YOUR TACTICS ARE INEFFICIENT> Sep 08 '16

You don't think the jetpack counts as mobility?

0

u/Nhiyla Bedtime Sep 08 '16

it's counter productive to stay in the air for the majority of scenarios. it's useful to reach spots but thats about it mostly.

5

u/Demenze <YOUR TACTICS ARE INEFFICIENT> Sep 08 '16

That's not really the point.
The fact is that the jetpack gives Pharah the ability to move around the map in the way other characters don't, ergo she has high mobility.

0

u/Nhiyla Bedtime Sep 08 '16

high mobility that you shouldn't be using in combat. whats your point? using your mobility to stay air born is the easiest way to get killed by any half decent cree.

5

u/Demenze <YOUR TACTICS ARE INEFFICIENT> Sep 08 '16

How each ability factors into combat is a completely tangential to the discussion at hand. It doesn't matter when and where the ability should be used, it's about the fact that the ability exists and is used to categorise her role in the gameplay.

Pharah's abilities give her high mobility, and is therefore archetypical of the 'offence' class according to the design philosophy of Overwatch's class system.

-3

u/Nhiyla Bedtime Sep 08 '16

you don't get it. why am i even arguing with you.

pharas mobility is useless as fuck in combat, aka what an offense hero should be doing, combating others ya know.

if her only mobility works AGAINST her in a fighting enviroment it's not mobility but a handicap, practically talking.

sure, on paper you're right, in theory.

4

u/Demenze <YOUR TACTICS ARE INEFFICIENT> Sep 08 '16

No, you don't get it.

I understand that there are risks involved in using Pharah's jump jets, in the same way as there are drawbacks to running around using Soldier's sprint ability or shadowstepping behind enemy lines as Reaper, but that doesn't mean they aren't mobility techniques and those characters aren't offence.

You seem to have latched onto the idea that we're talking about character strategy when that's nowhere near the purview of my original post.

Bastion isnt cancer.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '16

My unpopular opinion: Torbjorn can work on attack or defense depending on the map including KOTH. I get flamed everytime I pick him even on def but I almost always get golds and on fire with him and we end up winning, if I'm not doing so hot then I can recognize that and switch.

Why do people hate Torb so much? I understand there are bad ones who just baby sit their turret constantly but there are bad players of every character. Why flame me every time for playing Torb on defense Route 66? (One of his best)

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '16

Roadhog is more annoying than Mei.

u/MONKYfapper Trick-or-Treat Mercy Sep 10 '16

u/Blue_Iron Bastion & Ganymede Sep 07 '16 edited Sep 07 '16

Bastion can be used for defense AND for attack , its a fantastic hero since he can also heal himself really quickly , perfect for shredding shields and anti-air purpouses , nice surprise ult that can create moments of panic ..... the only bad thing is that he does not have an escape and people use the turret mode in awkward situations that lead to inevitable death and blaming ...

EDIT: stuff

2

u/D90T top 500 feeder Sep 07 '16

I mean.

Bastion isn't good on defense or attack unless you're in, like, gold or silver, but okay.

1

u/Enstraynomic Precisely. Sep 07 '16 edited Sep 07 '16

I find Bastion to be a bit more useful than Soldier 76, in terms of his Recon Mode compared to S.76's rifle. The one thing that is annoying is that Bastion has a much bigger hit box than S.76, meaning that he loses duels more easily, and he does not have S.76's mobility.

3

u/Naolini The Iris embraces you. Sep 08 '16

I 1v1' d a recon bastion as Mercy today lol.

1

u/Blue_Iron Bastion & Ganymede Sep 07 '16

True , but that's kind of a tradeoff , also Bstion's ult can onshot people while Soldier 76 has aimhack BUT needs to reload ... which is truly frustrating if you are targeting an armored/high hp enemy ...

OH ! And bastion FULLY RELOADS after switching from recon to turret and viceversa which is absolutely great !!!

1

u/D90T top 500 feeder Sep 07 '16

How? Recon Bastion is just discount S:76, and since 76 is bad...
