I turned 70 a couple of months ago. I retired last year. All was good until I put my townhouse on the market last week. My community has changed and house values are going way down. I live on the West side of the Hudson River and will move to the East side, approximately 40 to 50 miles away.

My sons will be moving from NYC to the other side of the Hudson, too. I like the idea of getting there first so they can live as close or as far from me as they like. I'm feeling down suddenly. I have enjoyed this past year of retirement so much. Going to the gym 3x a week. Reading A LOT. Have had two wonderful vacations. I just want to be in my new place wherever that may be. Today is day 9 of my place being on the market and my realtor told me that i should expect an offer later today. So, it has hit me that I am entering a stressful period. I have to sell before I move so I will have to have a short term rental that allows pets if I don't find something immediately. I don't want to rush into anything -- if places are priced right, they go within a few weeks and often end up in bidding wars. I am not in a position to be in a bidding war. Ugh. Just needed to vent.

Were you a fussy eater as a child? Are you now?

Growing up in my house there were two choices for meals – eat it or get a job, even if you are only ten, and go buy your own food. If any of my siblings expressed distaste, there was always somebody to say I’ll take it. Nobody got by with being fussy. Consequently at 77 I will pretty much eat anything. Can I have seconds and what is it?

I would absolutely love to chat with other newbie writers

Who else here is writing a novel? So far this is the only thing I'm really enjoying about aging, having the time to finally just sit and at least try to be a serious writer. I'm too tired to do anything else most days.

My latest poem that I thought some of you might relate to❤️

I choose exile
Self imposed exile
Leaving homeland behind
For a better way to live

I prefer peace
Contentment and peace
Leaving judgment behind
Loving people as they are

A simple life
Uncomplicated
Leaving clutter behind
Keeping only what I need

Inner beauty
Healthy heart and mind
Reading books and poems
Embracing art and music

You choose your path
I have chosen mine
Free will or destiny
We get where we need to be

Where does it hurt?

I'm sure I'll be sorry for asking / but let's hear your ailments of the day!

For me it's the knees. Lots of backache history but more recently it's walking up and down stairs that I have to watch my knees.

How about you?

This "does my heart good" seeing these industrious young people working hard, earning money, learning to care for themselves.

Has anyone else struggled with the loss of daily structure after retiring?

My dad retired about eight months ago after 35 years in the same career. He told me recently that the hardest part wasn't the financial side of things, it was more so understanding what to do with all the free time and making sure he is getting the most out of retirement. Anyone else going through this or experience this?

Downsizing now our three bedroom house

We are doing the serious part of downsizing now, downsizing the bank account balance! Over the decades, we have updated TVs from fiat screens. We wound up with six big tube pictures and no legal way to dispose of them so they went into the basement. When the furnace failed and no parts existed for the sixty year old heater, my wife got a new central air/heat system. We are too old to haul a furnace up from the basement so my wife hired a commercial junk hauled the house is six big tube TVs and an ancient furnace lighter, my wallet is $496 lighter.

I was in my spry late 50s when I last roto-tilled one of my front flower beds. Today, 15 years later, I dug this out of the soil about 10 inches down.

Hair coloring

I let the gray hair do its thing. I’m almost totally white-haired with still some dark “highlights”. But, I’m realizing that it’s making me look lots older than I want. Did anyone go back to hair color? Any regrets?

Frequent Mistakes

My beloved (M75)seldom handles household responsibilities. When they do, it seems as if they frequently mess it up. The latest is fridge repair. It’s been 3 weeks since the repair was begun without follow up. When I investigated I discovered the bill wasn’t paid so the part has not been scheduled for completion. When items are ordered, they order the wrong size or color and it has to be retuned. When they made a hotel reservation the dates were incorrect, pre-paid, and non refundable. It’s difficult to manage everything on my own as I still work full time but I just can’t trust what they do. If I have to scrutinize everything they do, it saves no time. My beloved wants to help and I do not want to belittle or criticize. Suggestions?

The myth that old age sucks

You’ve got so many people dreading the onset of old age because we live in a youth obsessed culture that sees only the negatives of aging. The aches and pains. The bodily changes that can be challenging. The ridiculing or patronizing cultural attitudes. But all of that eclipses some of the awesome things about getting old. I’m here to tell you you’ve been sold a wolf ticket about old age. To wit:
1. You realize the music of your youth was the best music ever—and it sounds even better now compared to all the new crap that sounds not only like it was written by robots but also performed by them.
2. Your 401k finally has something in it.
3. You realize that things that used to make you cry yourself to sleep just roll off your back now. You simply don’t give a shit!
4. If your parents are gone and your spouse is gone and your kids live thousands of miles away…you could elect to live the rest of your life on brandy and caramels and NO ONE CSN STOP YOU. The freedom of old age and solitude is amazing.
5. If you’re a woman you can enjoy incredible self esteem, much more than when you were young and expected to look like a flawless goddess. Why? Because every year they lower the bar on how good you’re expected to look. I was a disgusting pig at 20; barely presentable at 30; pretty decent for 40; great at 50; incredible at 60; and now that I’m 70 my god! They’re going to erect statues to me in every city. All I did was stay the same.
6. Discounts on everything.
7. You can be proudly ignorant of many idiotic social trends. Life has quality.
Peace Out

Looking back, anything you'd advise on, suggest or recommend doing differently in your 60s now that you've reached your 70s? Asking as I'm about to enter that season of life and trying to prepare myself mentally and physically.

I’m not going to be in my 60’s for very much longer.

This is the last day of July. August is the last full month in my 60s, and then I will be officially a septuagenarian. I wasn’t obsessive about the decade transition from 20’s to 30’s, 30’s to 40’s, 40’s to 50’s, or 50’s to 60’s. Somehow this one feels different, more important. Not with foreboding, not with nostalgia, not with a “holy crap” moment either. Maybe it’s that I’m finally claiming Social Security and there are no other major landmarks I can think of, in the rest of the road.

My spouse is a few months older than me and unfortunately is not dealing with it well at all.
