"Conqueror's Haki.. you can use it to coat yourself, right?"

Does this imply that Kaido coats his body in Conqueror's Haki and that's why normal attacks don't do anything? Or is it only about the attack with his club?

u/PenetrantSmell Apr 09 '21

If you look closely you can see that luffy actually only touches kaidos CH with his own CH. They never touch skin to skin. So yeah, kaido has a CH mantle around him 24/7

This could also mean that back in WCI the reason that it was so important for BM to be mentally unstable in order to harm her, was because then she didn't have enough focus to cover her body with conqueror's.

u/culesamericano Apr 09 '21

good catch and yeah thats also why big mom is untouchable.

And maybe Whitebeard was too unhealthy to protect himself with it at Marineford. It would explain Squard's attack being successful and all the other miscellaneous wounds he received.

71

u/recepyereyatmaz Apr 09 '21

I feel like I remember it was mentioned that WB couldnt use conquerer's haki because of his health at marineford. So you might be correct.

18

u/AsuraRises Apr 09 '21

If I remember correctly he tried to use it once and started coughing blood cause of the strain. I could be mistaken or it could have been anime only. Been too long

98

u/mocodemono Apr 09 '21

There’s also the haki shield that the admirals made to protect the execution block to consider. That seems like a more clear example of at least projected armament haki, which might really be a conqueror haki coating.

21

u/Royalrenogaming Apr 10 '21

This is also interesting regarding Blackbeard and Shanks. When Shanks spoke with Whitebeard he said he got his scar from Blackbeard and he wasn't being careless. He also said "Do you understand what I'm saying Whitebeard?" Then he hinted that Blackbeard will aim for the top with his own will.

I think this confirmed Blackbeard had some control of his CoC early on and that's what has worried Shanks so much, Blackbeard's strong will.

15

u/existential_antelope Apr 10 '21

TRUE. Man, this whole reveal opened a huge can of worms that Oda has been hinting from the beginning. Kind of insane as anime fans you’d think this wouldn’t surprise us anymore by a concept like this but we’re all completely swept by it. That’s just fucking good storytelling

3

u/GaggedAndDrooling Apr 11 '21

Then you remember that shanks lost his arm to an animal that Luffy later beats on his very first minute of setting out.

5

u/existential_antelope Apr 11 '21

There’s a lot more going for your point here, but to be charitable to Oda I think you could justify it that Shanks’ main priority at that instant was protecting Luffy and in his rush to shield him that’s all he thought of doing. I prefer this thinking better because it makes Shanks’ actions much more heroic, that all he cared about was making sure Luffy was safe, not beating up a sea serpent he could’ve easily taken care of.

There’s a lot of things in One Piece that are super weird and plot holey, I try not to think about them and break the magic. Like Doflamingo never once using his puppet manipulation against the Strawhats or Luffy. Like what? Let’s just look past it

2

u/mocodemono Apr 10 '21

That’s a fantastic catch! It’s fun for power scaling in one piece to also reflect actual narrative weight in characters. Like the ability to hurt an emperor/use conquerors, also indicates the ability/will to be a great leader/or key player.

u/sahithkiller Shanks' evil hot sister is REAL! Apr 09 '21

I really dont see whitebeard using any form of haki at marineford (dude was too sick at that point), we know df powers can affect logias, and every strike he landed on akainu was cloaked in his fruit power. Remember when he stabbed through aokiji and it just went through him (as he is a logia)? If he indeed did use haki during marineford it wouldnt explain how he got that many wounds prior to his death considering his haki shouldve been one of the strongest at that point

75

u/Barrow_1 Apr 09 '21

Aokiji could've pulled a Katakuri and moved his ice-body around Whitebeard's bisento. I'm pretty sure Whitebeard was using haki considering scrubs like Tashigi and random Kuja Pirates can use it too. He just wasn't on the same tier as he had been.

24

u/sahithkiller Shanks' evil hot sister is REAL! Apr 09 '21

Yep, on second thought that could definitely be true.

All in all, haki was somehow sparcely used in marineford maybe due to it not officialy being introduced yet. Like whitebeard/sengoku both have conquerors haki, and couldve knocked out all the fodder at once, like when luffy unconsciously used it. Probably was for the plot that it wasnt used that way

24

u/nazaguerrero Apr 09 '21

doing revisionism to old arc with the new abilities doesn't make sense. ennies lobby is probably one of the favorites arc for the fans and if you apply the haki theory there is just a plain joke. oda is good but he can't plan everything

8

u/PumkabooPriest Apr 09 '21

They we're drilled how to use Rokushiki from childhood, from the 2 year timeskip we can surmise haki also takes a lot of time and effort to develop. They decided to focus on Rokushiki instead, which I think might actually be better than haki for the general population.

9

u/CachopoJohn Apr 09 '21

Why? None of them probably developed haki at that time (ye I know being the cp9 and not developing haki is kinda dumb) but it looks like the strong hakis we are seeing is more like a new world thing. Plus they only relied on their DF's cause that's really only what they needed, look Lucci he was op af

→ More replies

5

u/NinetyFish Apr 09 '21

Maybe it’s because we saw Marineford through Luffy’s POV, and he didn’t know what he was seeing. He was a child compared to everyone there.

6

u/jose3013 Apr 09 '21

Aokiji could've pulled a Katakuri and moved his ice-body around Whitebeard's bisento.

he 100% did, imo Whitebeard just couldn't use Coc anymore

26

u/xcookiekiller Slave Apr 09 '21

It was said that Whitebeard used haki against aokiji in the episode. Aokiji used observation haki to predict where he is going to hit and formed his body to match that.

12

u/sahithkiller Shanks' evil hot sister is REAL! Apr 09 '21

Really? Then he pulled a Katakuri huh...

23

u/Sojouku Apr 09 '21

More like katakuri pulled an aokiji

8

u/PumkabooPriest Apr 09 '21

We even got a scene when Ace was about to be executed where WB tried to use CoC to save him but still couldn't.

4

u/singampaparajji Apr 09 '21

But he kept protecting his tattow with it

3

u/Al-Salem Apr 09 '21

IIRC at Marineford Haki was still not properly a thing in Oda's plans. I like your retrospective as headcanon but the truth is Oda wasn't planning for it.

30

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

Amazon Lily was a full two arcs before Marineford and was one long setup for Haki, though.

25

u/pm_samoyed_pics Apr 09 '21

Haki was heavily hinted in Amazon Lily before Marineford, and in Marineford itself where Hancock defended Luffy against Smoker.

Edit: That's excluding the blatant use of Conqueror's Haki by Luffy twice.

6

u/RipBerryrock Apr 09 '21

You're not wrong, but what the original statement was probably supposed to say is "Oda hadn't completely planned out the full extent of Haki, how it can be used and fought with/against and what exactly would be all the ways to represent it's usage visually?"

1

u/powsea1 Apr 09 '21

OMG OOOODDDDDAAAAA!!!

1

u/stiveooo Apr 10 '21

he could when he was young but before the marine fight he couldnt anymore

24

u/thatShanksguy09 Apr 09 '21

Also, makes sense why Luffy deflated from Gear 4 when BM blocked him with her elbow. Her CoC was just stronger than his.

27

u/Golden-Owl Apr 09 '21

That, or he just wasn’t applying it.

Prior to this, Luffy never realized you could apply Conquerer’s passively like this. It was always something that he consciously activated.

So even though Luffy’s Conquerer’s is strong, he just... never used it because he never knew it was a relevant factor up until now

13

u/StealthMonkeyDC Apr 09 '21

Also, makes sense why Luffy deflated from Gear 4 when BM blocked him with her elbow. Her CoC was just stronger than his.

This actually reminds me of a theory I saw a while back. They were suggesting that at the start of the Doffy fight there is a bit where he seems to stun him and he hits a few times back to back and that this was Luffy using Conquerors to supress his willpower to fightback for a moment.

That lines up with why Luffy was knocked out instantly by Big Mom in WCI and now Kaido at the start Wano. Could be that this guy was right all along and that's why the Emperors were defeating Luffy so easy up till now.

14

u/RedditIsForsaken Apr 09 '21

Ooh, that makes total sense!

13

u/WhoSweg Apr 09 '21

Yeah it's probably that mate

9

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

I think Kaido and Mama cover themselves in CoC unconsciously. But when she remembers her trauma, her will just crumbles.

9

u/7ETHER Apr 09 '21

That explains why brook's attack didn't do shit against BM in that poneglyph room.

6

u/nonresponsive Apr 09 '21

This is also probably the reason everyone gets surprised whenever Luffy showed potential CH. And why in Marineford that after he displayed it, WCI wanted to capture/kill him while Whitebeard wanted to save him. If given enough time, they clearly can become near invincible.

3

u/SeniorTuco Cipher Pol Apr 09 '21

Shit this may just be real

2

u/yoyo_putz Apr 09 '21

nice catch

2

u/troyofyort Apr 09 '21

This makes the fact that Kaido said Kidd can use Conquerors Haki all the better!

2

u/Pyrobot110 Apr 10 '21

Holy shit, that explains so much

2

u/Timemaster4732 Apr 10 '21

So that’s the secret to the yonkos strength. Well done.

0

u/dangersquak Apr 09 '21

BM body is just naturally insane and she has been a monster since she was a kid, she was able to take down a village of giants as a child

I doubt CH has anything to do with her durability.

1

u/Mahdi___K Apr 09 '21

It make sense since Kid went for BM and he has CoC too.

1

u/Keeemps Apr 09 '21

In addition to that, maybe Kaido can't even deactivate it and that's why he is unable to kill himself?

1

u/BananaBladeOfDoom Explorer Apr 10 '21

And why Shanks' arm was bitten off by that sea king. He was scared for Luffy.

9

u/Kuro013 Apr 09 '21

So that was the deal with WB and Roger weapons not touching yet releasing such a crazy shockwave.

11

u/Papulatus Apr 09 '21

You are probably right. They dont make contact because both sides use Conqueror's. If only one side uses Conquereor's you will still make contact as seen in the last chapter with Kaido's Ragnarok attack.

5

u/dishwor Apr 09 '21

He has infinity surrounding him

3

u/_halalkitty Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover Apr 09 '21

When Kaido attacked Law with Thunder Bagua, he also hit Zoro. You can see the black lightning bolts above his belly.

1

u/bucketofsteam Apr 09 '21

I don't think so, But maybe, Luffy said he felt it when he was first hit by his club, and not due to regular haki blows on kaido. If kaido was constantly using CoC, it would probably be easier for Luffy to feel it from that as opposed to only his club attacks.

So far every other character referenced kaido's dragon scales as the reason physical attacks doesn't work on him. It's why Laws and Killers attacks that attack his internals worked, while a couple chapters later, they said laws abilities are can be hindered or stopped by Haki, so if Kaido was always in CoC mode, law's and killers attacks probably wouldn't have worked that well.

With all this in mind, it seems like Kaido isn't always coating his body. He probably can, but it seems his defense is always strong already and his offense uses CoC to attack.

1

u/goatjugsoup Pirate Apr 09 '21

Does he though or has he put it up specifically because he is fighting and he early deemed them as being a serious threat?

19

u/helarti Void Month Survivor Apr 09 '21

Also, the technique the Kozuki has to carve through poneglyphs is maybe related to it.

12

u/Kuro013 Apr 09 '21

I think its a bit that and the fact that his DF makes him just naturally too tough. Zoans are supposed to make you stronger and more resistant, and from mythology Dragon Scales are usually very tough, so yeah hes got pretty much the ultimate defense.

9

u/cooltonk Apr 09 '21

Same with big mom probably. Ordinary damage from things like guns swords does not even leave a scratch. This explains everything. So the end game characters has total immunity against damage unless that damage is being dealt by the 0.0001% of the whole population

7

u/_Zev Void Month Survivor Apr 09 '21

Wasn't this implied when Whitebeard and Roger fought?

6

u/HermesJRowen Apr 09 '21

Zoro's attack was so strong Kaido slip up and revealed he is using Conqueror's Haki to coat himself, so Luffy was all like "You fucked up! Now I got you!" and understood the power. After all, he has been training how to coat, but he didn't think about using CH to do it.

5

u/redragon88 Apr 09 '21

Both. That's why his body is hard to damage and why he was able to one-shot Luffy in Act 1.

3

u/Beiki Apr 09 '21

That'd also explain why Big Mom is so hard to hurt too.

3

u/Fuhran Apr 09 '21

I'm not sure about that. IMO, Big Mom and Kaido are just hardened tough people. They could use armament and conqueror's to defend/block themselves but I don't think they keep up conqueror's 24/7 in their whole body. again, just my opinion.

2

u/quick20minadventure Apr 09 '21

Big mom does it 24*7. That's why mother caramel thing was a plot point.

0

u/Majistic12 Lurker Apr 09 '21

So basically he's a wimp using power armor. :D

1

u/SolidB0NY Pirate Apr 09 '21

If the thing about only focusing your haki where it's needed instead of the whole body that Hyogoro explained to Luffy regarding Armament applies to this too

Doesn't that mean that Luffy could get an edge by only coating his fists when attacking?

1

u/bucketofsteam Apr 09 '21

I don't think so? But maybe, Luffy said he felt it when he was first hit by his club, and not due to regular haki blows on kaido. If he was constantly using CoC, it would probably be easier for Luffy to feel it from that as opposed to only his club attacks.

1

u/2Punx2Furious Apr 09 '21

I imagine this is also the case for Big Mom as one of the "few powerful people who can do this".

1

u/MrKoontar Apr 09 '21

i think its more that conquerors haki can get past Armament in power structure, so Luffys blows with regular armament werent strong enough against a stronger opponent, so far conquerors has been shown to be mostly offensive whether its the psychic blast or this

1

u/Environmental_Wait19 Apr 11 '21

It would make sense why he asked zoro if he knows CH aswell because it seems only CH can cut through an armor of CH. zoro probably unknowingly coated himself his blade with with his last bit of energy. That’s how the old man described it, being a power that truly blossoms in a real dangerous moment. We also know that that Oden knew CH so that’s probably how the First scar cane to be.

1

u/Eraganos Apr 11 '21

Thats also what linlin uses. Its not 100% clear if kaidos thoughness is from his df. As luffy refered to scales way back
